Advent Angel Tree Projects for TASP and HIP in Reception Lobby THIS SUNDAY
|
Advent Angel Tree Projects begin THIS SUNDAY
Please
stop by the tree in the reception area to pick an ornament off the tree. Each
ornament will offer you an opportunity to share the love of the Christ child
with a neighbor in need. This year we are asking for gifts for the students at
Trenton After School Program (TASP)
and for the families of Housing Initiatives of Princeton (HIP). TASP asks for books for children-you'll find details about
age and gender on the tag. HIP has a broad variety of suggestions for the
children and adults served by our transitional housing ministry, and will share
these gifts during a festive luncheon on December 20th. The most
important detail, though, is that all
gifts need to be returned to Trinity no later than next Sunday, December 13th.

Hands Healing Prayer Ministry meets THIS SUNDAY at 10am
|
Hands Healing Prayer Ministry: An Invitation 10:00 AM
December 6, 2009
We are taught, 'Ask, and you shall receive.' Healing
begins the moment we decide to ask for healing through prayer. Are you
interested in the lay ministry of praying for healing for others? Prayers for
Healing and the Laying on of Hands are offered at Trinity in the Lady Chapel on
Sundays, beginning during the Eucharist and through 10 minutes following the
three services. Father Paul is giving us the opportunity to learn and discuss
more about this ministry at Trinity. All are invited on the Second Sunday of
Advent, during Forum 10 o'clock hour, December 6, 2009, in the
Parlor.

Gordon Graham on this week's lectionary readings |
Since preparations for Christmas
tend to begin almost the moment Thanksgiving is over, it is always worth
repeating that the season of Advent starts out with a focus on the Second
Coming, not the First. The fourth Sunday in Advent segues into Christmas, but
the emphasis of the second and third Sundays is on sin, penitence and judgment.
In this week's readings the prophet Malachi speaks of'the
Lord whom you seek' suddenly appearing and asks "But who can endure the day of
his coming, and who can stand when he appears?' In the Gospel, John the Baptist
repeats a similar message from the prophet Isaiah, calling people to repentance
and promising them forgiveness.
These are actually hard themes for
a modern church congregation to take to heart. Contemporary anxiety about being
welcoming and inclusive rather than 'judgmental' generally means that people
steer clear of the ideas of sin and judgment altogether. Advent, like Lent, is
an opportunity to think hard about this modern tendency.
When we speak of welcoming all,
our 'inclusiveness' has decided limits. Generally, we are not thinking of
opening our doors to racists, child abusers, Nazi war criminals, serial killers
or violent rapists. God's forgiveness of the penitent, however, is not limited
in the way ours is. That ought to remind us that Divine Judgment is not limited
by human standards either. Our sins may more often be hypocrisy and
self-satisfaction than theft or brutality. But they are there. Conscious of their
own sin, Christians ought not to fear judgment. Rather, in penitence and faith
they should long for it since, as Malachi also says, the Lord's coming promises
to refine and purify us.

Please let us know if you find yourself in the hospital!
|
An important reminder from your Pastoral Care Commission: Stricter guidelines regarding patient information are now in place that
impact hospital visits by the clergy and members of the church. If you are hospitalized and
desire pastoral care support, you or your family members should notify
the church office, or one of the clergy. Upon admission to the
hospital, please state both your denomination and place of worship for
the inclusion of your medical records. Otherwise, we have no way of
knowing your situation and needs. This information will be made known to the Pastoral Care Commission.

Men's early bird (6:30am) Tuesday morning Bible study welcomes you
|
First and third Tuesdays of each month 6:30 AM in Flemer Library.
Contact: Charles Stenard
charles.stenard@comcast.net
This group, currently of six regular participants, was formed
several years ago by a Trinity men's retreat, seeking a continuation of
fellowship and contemplative study of holy scripture. The group welcomes new
participants. We adopted an Ignatian form of study, wherein at each meeting,
one participant reads aloud the appointed gospel passage of the day twice,
followed by a silent period allowing the passage to be absorbed. Then the
participants share their thoughts, particularly how the passage speaks to them
and their lives. The group adjourns at 7:30
AM and breakfast together at the Carousel. Prominent features of
the experience of the group include friendship, mutual respect,
confidentiality, and learning from one another.

Beads of perspiration. Fluttering stomach. Tapping toes. Okay,
there's no doubt the character is nervous, but isn't there a less clichéd, more
vivid way of showing it? You bet. In this class we'll look at a variety of
emotions and learn how to evoke them. Anger, hope, fear, confusion, jealousy,
forgiveness, and others-by examining both good and not-so-good examples, and
through writing exercises, we'll learn how to "show" these emotions using
original, vivid language.
For more information, please contact Lauren B. Davis at Lauren@LaurenBDavis.com.
Class size is
limited to 12 students so please register early.
