Soup Kitchen. Monday, November 30th. And no one has volunteered yet...
|
I'm not one to get nervous, or lose faith, but I will admit to being just a little bit concerned that no one has volunteered to help prepare and serve lunch at Trenton Area Soup Kitchen (TASK) on the 30th.
Trinity provides the team at TASK every 5th Monday, and they really do count on our help. We start work at 9:45am, and folks can either meet us at TASK (2 Escher Street, Trenton, NJ) or gather at Trinity at 9:15am (note corrected time!) to assemble carpools.
Please email me and let me know you'll be joining in this day of service.
Thank you!

Please let us know if you find yourself in the hospital!
|
An important reminder from your Pastoral Care Commission:
Stricter guidelines regarding patient information are now in place that
impact hospital visits by the clergy and members of the church. If you are hospitalized and
desire pastoral care support, you or your family members should notify
the church office, or one of the clergy. Upon admission to the
hospital, please state both your denomination and place of worship for
the inclusion of your medical records. Otherwise, we have no way of
knowing your situation and needs. This information will be made known to the Pastoral Care Commission.

Gordon Graham on this week's lectionary readings |
This is the closing Sunday of the Christian year, and
celebrates Christ as King. The lectionary readings from the Old Testament offer
a choice - to focus on David, the greatest of all Israel's kings, or on a more
general image of kingship. The former might seem a rather better choice,
because the image of 'king' does not have much resonance in the modern world.
This is especially true in a country like the United States, which was deliberately
founded on a republican ideal, the outright rejection of royalty and the
affirmation of the equality of citizens. Since the focus on David brings to the
fore the Christmas theme that Jesus is 'of David's line', we seem on more obviously
religious or theological ground with that.
But in fact, the difference is merely one of emphasis. It is
David's kingship that matters. His status in first century Judaism was like
George Washington's in American political culture - uniquely important, and in
no way diminished by his evident human failings. Israel's hopes, by and large, were
still pinned on the thought that a new David would arise, and return the Jewish
nation to its rightful place as a 'light to lighten the Gentiles'. As history turned
out, it was not to be. What Christians believe is that, against this
background, God acted to reveal a quite different kind of kingship - 'not of
this world' - as Jesus expressly says in the Gospel passage for this Sunday,
and ultimately revealed in the paradox of a 'crown of thorns'. We mustn't read 'not of
this world' as 'otherworldly' detachment from ordinary life, but the message
does run counter to the hopes people pin on all political programs, not just
those of old fashioned royalists.
So to celebrate the Feast of Christ the King properly, we
must be sure to avoid all hints of triumphalism, any implied suggestion that
'our man' won out in the end. Rather, in a spirit of wondering humility we must
find a way of accepting that God's ways are not our ways, His thoughts are not
our thoughts, and yet it is His ways that prevail. The incarnation of God in
Jesus makes it possible for us to do that, and celebrating Christ as King is an
acknowledgment of this fundamental truth.

Men's early bird (6:30am) Tuesday morning Bible study welcomes you
|
First and third Tuesdays of each month 6:30 AM in Flemer Library.
Contact: Charles Stenard
charles.stenard@comcast.net
This group, currently of six regular participants, was formed
several years ago by a Trinity men's retreat, seeking a continuation of
fellowship and contemplative study of holy scripture. The group welcomes new
participants. We adopted an Ignatian form of study, wherein at each meeting,
one participant reads aloud the appointed gospel passage of the day twice,
followed by a silent period allowing the passage to be absorbed. Then the
participants share their thoughts, particularly how the passage speaks to them
and their lives. The group adjourns at 7:30
AM and breakfast together at the Carousel. Prominent features of
the experience of the group include friendship, mutual respect,
confidentiality, and learning from one another.

Mystery Wine Grab Bag at this year's St. Nicholas Bazaar December 4th Preview Party
|
Thank you. So many of
you have already stepped up and given us some wonderful donations for the St.
Nick's Preview Party Auction but we still need so much more. We can always use gift certificates from a
restaurant or retail shop or for a relaxing massage of other luxury. Perhaps you have a lovely bottle of wine
which you would donate to help launch our new mystery wine grab bag (more on
that below).
Remember this is your chance to make the 2009 Auction
something very special because without each of us making donations there would
not be a 2009 Auction to benefit Trinity's many outreach programs.
Again, thank you and please contact Lynne Davis, Gretchen Jaeckel or Jen Bartell (please see contact info below).

Wine Grab Bag
Mystery Wine Grab Bag:
help make the St. Nick's Preview Party Auction a resounding
success. We are going to have a wine
grab bag event. For a modest ticket price you will have the right to select a
mystery wine which could be worth twice as much as the price of your
ticket. Go to your cellar or cabinet
and pull out one of those bottles you have been saving and donate to the
mystery wine grab bag. Please note that
we can only accept bottles of wine that have a value over $25 for the mystery
wine grab bag. You may contact Lynne
Davis, Jennie Bartell or Gretchen Jaeckel should you wish to donate a bottle of
mystery wine.
