Annual Meeting and Vestry Election THIS SUNDAY! Please note: No 11 am service
|
The Parish
Annual Meeting will take place this Sunday, November 15, in the Church immediately
following the 9 AM Service. The Parish will elect 5 new Vestry members and 2
wardens. All parishioners 16 and older are eligible to
vote. You must be present to vote; sorry, no absentee ballots. An
additional agenda item this year is a proposed amendment to the Parish
certificate of incorporation to reduce the size of the Vestry from 15
to 12, or 4 members for each Vestry class, to be phased in starting
with the class to be elected next year in November 2010. The Rector
and the Vestry have proposed this change because of our increased
emphasis on parish committees and the opportunity that they, together
with the Parish Council of committee chairs, present for leadership.
The Vestry will continue its historic leadership role in finance,
personnel, stewardship, and long range planning. We believe that the
smaller Vestry will be able more efficiently to focus on its core
mission.

Jane's Thanksgiving Plans Depend on Your Generosity
|
Thanksgiving Food Drive Sunday, November 22nd Pick up your bag this week!
Have you ever wondered about who gets the food we share? As we think about our own Thanksgiving feasts, consider some of the people who look to Crisis Ministry for their daily bread. We'll feature some of their stories (not using their real names) in the coming weeks...
Jane has four children and her husband
is struggling with a chronic illness. He is a graduate student and they
are having a hard time making ends meet. Jane comes twice each month to
our Princeton office to keep food on her table
for her family.
Everyday our partners at Crisis Ministry see workers from Princeton
University, Princeton
Medical Center, Princeton Public Schools, and many area
businesses. They come in for food or financial assistance. These are the people who receive your generous gifts--your neighbors, your brothers and sisters in Christ. Your gifts of food and cash are crucial to
our neighbors in need.

Trinity parishioner Holly Johnson to discuss the human psyche November 16th
|
Dr. Holly Harrison Johnson, a member of Trinity Church, will be speaking at a
meeting of the Women's College Club of Princeton Monday, November 16,
at 1 P.M. in the parish hall of All Saints' Church, 16 All Saints' Road, in
Princeton.
Dr. Johnson, a Jungian analyst and licensed
clinical social worker, will talk on Swiss psychologist Carl Jung's approach to
understanding the human psyche, focusing particularly on the value of dreams,
fairy tales, and art as tools for the expansion, restoration, or repair of "the
psychic house in which we live." A graduate of Barnard College, Parson's School
of Design, Fordham University's School of Social Work, the Union Institute for
Doctoral Studies, and the C.G. Jung Institute of New York, Dr. Johnson has,
during her working life, pursued careers in interior and stage design and
children's book illustration, as well as Jungian analysis. She lectures on her
special areas of interest to both professional and lay audiences.
This is a lecture not to be missed by one of
Trinity's own members of extraordinary talents and achievement

Please let us know if you find yourself in the hospital!
|
An important reminder from your Pastoral Care Commission:
Stricter guidelines regarding patient information are now in place that
impact hospital visits by the clergy and members of the church. If you are hospitalized and
desire pastoral care support, you or your family members should notify
the church office, or one of the clergy. Upon admission to the
hospital, please state both your denomination and place of worship for
the inclusion of your medical records. Otherwise, we have no way of
knowing your situation and needs. This information will be made known to the Pastoral Care Commission.

Gordon Graham on this week's lectionary readings |
Imagine you heard someone predict that a few years from now,
the buildings on Capitol Hill in Washington DC would lie in ruins, never to be
rebuilt. Would you believe it? Probably not, but if you did take it seriously,
it would be a truly frightening prospect - in effect, pretty much the end of
the world as we know it. This little thought experiment may help to give us
insight into how the prediction Jesus makes in the Gospel for this Sunday must
have struck his hearers. Of course, only his disciples would have taken him
seriously; everyone else would have written him off as crazy. Yet he was right.
Within forty years, the massive Temple at Jerusalem, a symbol for the Jews of
the enduring stability of their faith, was destroyed by Rome, the most powerful
empire the world had ever seen. But, Jesus adds, the destruction of the Temple and
the wars that will follow it are just the start.
These apocalyptic passages from the Gospels are sometimes thought
to be embarrassing. They seem to portray Jesus as a 'prophet of doom', just
like one of those eccentric people who walk the streets with a billboard
declaring 'The End of the World is Nigh". When we see them in this light, it's
worth remembering that in due course, the Empire did indeed collapse and its
Capitol buildings were ruined just like the Temple was. Thereby a whole world
-- the world of Greece and Rome -- did end. In its place of course, other
worlds arose, up to and including the 'global village' of which we are
increasingly a part. They too will end, and so will ours, hard though it may be
for us to believe it.
The 'triumph' of Jesus over sin and death stands in sharp
contrast to the dominance of the Temple and the might of Rome. It does not take
the form of yet more spectacular and longer lasting political and military
institutions. He is executed as a criminal, and a few humble people in an
obscure corner of the earth witness his Resurrection from the dead. From this
inauspicious beginning, though, a truly different kind of institution was born
- the Church - that mystical Body in which billions of people, both living and
dead, are united as one in Christ Jesus. It is here, and only here, the Gospel
tells us, that we can expect to find 'an abiding city'.

Mystery Wine Grab Bag at this year's St. Nicholas Bazaar December 4th Preview Party
|
Thank you. So many of
you have already stepped up and given us some wonderful donations for the St.
Nick's Preview Party Auction but we still need so much more. We can always use gift certificates from a
restaurant or retail shop or for a relaxing massage of other luxury. Perhaps you have a lovely bottle of wine
which you would donate to help launch our new mystery wine grab bag (more on
that below).
Remember this is your chance to make the 2009 Auction
something very special because without each of us making donations there would
not be a 2009 Auction to benefit Trinity's many outreach programs.
Again, thank you and please contact Lynne Davis, Gretchen Jaeckel or Jen Bartell (please see contact info below).

Wine Grab Bag
Mystery Wine Grab Bag:
help make the St. Nick's Preview Party Auction a resounding
success. We are going to have a wine
grab bag event. For a modest ticket price you will have the right to select a
mystery wine which could be worth twice as much as the price of your
ticket. Go to your cellar or cabinet
and pull out one of those bottles you have been saving and donate to the
mystery wine grab bag. Please note that
we can only accept bottles of wine that have a value over $25 for the mystery
wine grab bag. You may contact Lynne
Davis, Jennie Bartell or Gretchen Jaeckel should you wish to donate a bottle of
mystery wine.

Christmas Pageant for Children Sunday, December 20th at 4pm
|
 |
Following last year's
success, there will be a special Children's Christmas Pageant at Trinity on the
Sunday before Christmas (20th December) at 4pm in the afternoon. The
pageant is an opportunity for children to present the Christmas story in a
dramatic way with words, music and dance. Performers will be in two age groups.
There are more ambitious speaking and acting parts for children from Grades 5
to 8, and simpler singing and dancing parts for Pre-K to Grade 4. Please let Sarah Gaventa know of children who
would like to take part. It would be especially good to be able to identify
children who have special gifts/interests/experience e.g. acting experience,
playing an instrument, singing solos, dancing etc.
It is ESSENTIAL that ALL the performers are able to attend
the relevant rehearsals, so before signing up, PLEASE check out the schedule
below to see that this will be possible. Of course, children who cannot take
part as performers are warmly welcome to attend the pageant itself.
