When you know better, you do better
|
I love the quote "When you know better, you do better" and I believe you'll soon understand why.
I was raised Episcopalian.
I have vivid memories of my father, dressed in a suit, slipping our church envelop into his breast
pocket before we headed to church.
Usually my Dad would place the envelope into the velvet lined collection plate but he would always give us change
from his pocket so
we could contribute too.

Although this was our ritual, it was never discussed. As a matter of fact, as a child I viewed the offering as "extra", change you
found in your pocket, whatever you had on hand the church would be grateful to
receive. I never even thought about what was in the envelope and it certainly
never represented money to me.
Now fast forward to about 15 years ago when Doug and I
started to attend Trinity. Of
course I wanted the envelopes because that was such a part of my fabric. I
was still under the guise that the collection was just for
"extra" money. No commitment,
no purpose, just extra money and the church was grateful for whatever you contributed. I remember forgetting the envelope on occasion and Doug and I would panic. He would reach for his
wallet and show me all of our options. Then, with my eyes bugging out of my head I would intimate "$20, are you crazy???"
Now fast forward to about 4 years ago when we started to get
much more involved in the church.
We saw where our dollars were needed and where they were being used. That was my "Ah ha moment"...I realized
then that I was the beneficiary of most of what Trinity offered...
- All 4 of my children were baptized right here at this altar
-
How could we have attended services without Sophie and
Sophia in the toddler daycare?
-
All my children attend Sunday school
-
Our family loves to attend Shrove Tuesdays pancake supper
-
I sat in these pews many days when the sermon spoke right
to my heart
-
The clergy consoled me 5 years ago when my father passed
away and again in December when my
mother passed too
-
AND, I'm afraid to let you all in on Trinity's best kept
secret, but Compline is amazing
So by now, we started to catch on and we started giving more...Remember
what I told you in the beginning, When you know better, you do better.
Fast forward one last time to 2008. In September I asked Anne Marie to explain tithing to me and it became
our long term goal. Then October hit and the bottom fell out of the financial markets. My husband is in
the financial industry and the stress in our house was unbelievable. No one's employment was secure and my husband was no exception. And then came the letter from Trinity asking us to increase our
pledge. Doug and I discussed it and came to some very important conclusions. We are incredibly grateful to God for all of our blessings
and our cup runneth over. We
agreed then to double our pledge. It was
a really scary decision given the economic environment but we did so with
complete faith in God and with a tremendous love for Trinity Church.
We are currently at about 5% and I proudly say..."When you know better you do better" and I am still learning.

Thinking about your Thanksgiving Menu? So are the clients at Crisis Ministry
|
Thanksgiving Food Drive Sunday, November 22nd Pick up your bag this week!
Each year Trinity Church does a major food drive the Sunday before Thanksgiving. This year will be no different. You'll get an empty grocery bag at church this week, and you'll be asked to return it, full to the brim, on Sunday, November 22nd. Have you ever wondered about who gets the food we share? As we think about our own Thanksgiving feasts, consider some of the people who look to Crisis Ministry for their daily bread. We'll feature some of their stories (not using their real names) in the coming weeks...
Michael works full-time and is raising his two children while living
with his mother. He earns $1800 net
income per month and his mother is charging him $600 per month for rent. He is trying to save money for first months
rent and a security deposit so he can move out.
He comes to our Princeton office for
food assistance to help stretch his income toward his goal of independence.
Esperanza has four elementary school aged
children and her husband works in landscaping.
During the winter there is less work and she needs help feeding her
family. She comes to the Crisis
Ministry.
Never forget that everyday our partners at Crisis Ministry see workers from Princeton
University, Princeton
Medical Center, Princeton Public Schools, and many area
businesses. They come in for food or financial assistance. These are the people who receive your generous gifts--your neighbors, your brothers and sisters in Christ. Your gifts of food and cash are crucial to
our neighbors in need.

Evans, Janet Haring, Andrea Hyde, Beverly Leach, Judy Lowry, Jean Mahoney, Nancy
and Ed Metcalf, May Papastephanou, Jan and John Pell, Andrea Sacchetti, Carol

with his sister-in-law Leslie Ecklund, and sons John Paul and Luke
Jeanes. And sextons Roberto and Enrique worked tirelessly with us and even after
we'd all gone home. The Grounds Committee hopes to see everyone again in the
spring!

Gordon Graham on this week's lectionary readings |

This week's combination of readings - whether in the
continuous track or the thematic track - seems somewhat random. Both the Old
Testament lessons are about women in need of protection and support. The
Epistle continues the Hebrews theme of Christ's priesthood, while the Gospel
from Mark recounts the episode known as 'the widow's mite'. This is the
occasion when Jesus praises a widow woman who has given a tiny sum of money to
the synagogue in preference to the wealthy people he had seen give far larger
sums.
There is an obvious lesson we can draw from this brief
episode. Since it seems so plain that generosity is relative to the resources of
the giver, it is indeed odd that human beings are so impressed by 'big bucks'.
We always hear about huge philanthropic gifts - from Carnegie, Rockefeller,
Bill Gates and so on - even though we know that these have cost them nothing by
way of personal sacrifice, while we don't hear much about the small
philanthropic gifts that are possible only because the givers have forgone
things that they wanted. Generosity can never be measured by the size of the
gift, and this is a truth worth repeating again and again.
Still, important though this lesson is, it does not take us
to the heart of the Gospel. This impoverished woman is giving all that she has
to live on to the treasury of the Temple Jerusalem. She thereby
demonstrates the depths to which faith in God can go -- a sharp contrast to the shallowness of
'showy' religion on which Jesus comments in the preceding verses. Yet the
hypocrites he condemns do indeed get worldly acclaim, while the poor widow
remains in her poverty. That is why her case presents us, as it did Jesus'
hearers, with a real counter-cultural
challenge. Which, in all honesty, do we prefer - the kind of success that the
world in which we live undoubtedly favors (and which church going can sometimes
help along), or the spiritual depth and simplicity that brings us closer to
God?

November 15th Annual Meeting and Vestry Election
|
 |
The Parish
Annual Meeting will take place on Sunday, November 15, in the Church immediately
following the 9 AM Service. The Parish will elect 5 new Vestry members and 2
wardens. All parishioners 16 and older are eligible to
vote. You must be present to vote; sorry, no absentee ballots. An additional
agenda item this year is a proposed amendment to the Parish certificate of
incorporation to reduce the size of the Vestry from 15 to 12, or 4 members for
each Vestry class, to be phased in starting with the class to be elected next
year in November 2010. The Rector and the Vestry have proposed this change
because of our increased emphasis on parish committees and the opportunity that
they, together with the Parish Council of committee chairs, present for leadership. The Vestry will continue its historic leadership role in finance,
personnel, stewardship, and long range planning. We believe that the smaller
Vestry will be able more efficiently to focus on its core
mission.
There will be no 11am service on November 15th

Mystery Wine Grab Bag at this year's St. Nicholas Bazaar December 4th Preview Party
|
Thank you. So many of
you have already stepped up and given us some wonderful donations for the St.
Nick's Preview Party Auction but we still need so much more. We can always use gift certificates from a
restaurant or retail shop or for a relaxing massage of other luxury. Perhaps you have a lovely bottle of wine
which you would donate to help launch our new mystery wine grab bag (more on
that below).
Remember this is your chance to make the 2009 Auction
something very special because without each of us making donations there would
not be a 2009 Auction to benefit Trinity's many outreach programs.
Again, thank you and please contact Lynne Davis, Gretchen Jaeckel or Jen Bartell (please see contact info below).

Wine Grab Bag
Mystery Wine Grab Bag:
help make the St. Nick's Preview Party Auction a resounding
success. We are going to have a wine
grab bag event. For a modest ticket price you will have the right to select a
mystery wine which could be worth twice as much as the price of your
ticket. Go to your cellar or cabinet
and pull out one of those bottles you have been saving and donate to the
mystery wine grab bag. Please note that
we can only accept bottles of wine that have a value over $25 for the mystery
wine grab bag. You may contact Lynne
Davis, Jennie Bartell or Gretchen Jaeckel should you wish to donate a bottle of
mystery wine.

Christmas Pageant for Children Sunday, December 20th at 4pm
|
 |
Following last year's
success, there will be a special Children's Christmas Pageant at Trinity on the
Sunday before Christmas (20th December) at 4pm in the afternoon. The
pageant is an opportunity for children to present the Christmas story in a
dramatic way with words, music and dance. Performers will be in two age groups.
There are more ambitious speaking and acting parts for children from Grades 5
to 8, and simpler singing and dancing parts for Pre-K to Grade 4. Please let Sarah Gaventa know of children who
would like to take part. It would be especially good to be able to identify
children who have special gifts/interests/experience e.g. acting experience,
playing an instrument, singing solos, dancing etc.
It is ESSENTIAL that ALL the performers are able to attend
the relevant rehearsals, so before signing up, PLEASE check out the schedule
below to see that this will be possible. Of course, children who cannot take
part as performers are warmly welcome to attend the pageant itself.
