Trinity Church E-Pistle October 15, 2009
Keeping our house open to
EVERYONE
                                    Peter Nalen

So what is stewardship?  Paul Jeanes, our rector, has done an excellent job providing a religious and Christian perspective. I have another, hopefully just as Christian, view-it's about ensuring our house is open and functional for us to enjoy, and for anyone else who would like to enter.

As we have heard both this week and last, we are a community, a family--a group of "us" not "I", "we" not "me". And like any family we have expenses that we have to pay to keep the household going. And trust me, our house in which we gather each week  is no different than the one in which you awake each morning. We have our expenses. And why wouldn't we? Where else can you go at least once a week for 1-3 to be entertained and educated, supported and nurtured, loved and cared for hours? And  we think this is free? How could it be?

So like any family with a house, we have expenses and we need to discuss paying for them.

I'd like to share with you some of those costs. Keep in kind these do not include our larger expenses such as personnel, servicing the debt, pensions, or our World Class music program.

  • You have telephone and computers at home-do you pay  a Verizon bill ?  So do we, to the tune of $100K, That's just for the phones, computers and printers, and their upkeep, not for the personnel who actually use them.
  • How about utilities? You like heat in the winter (this is just for the heat as many of you know who have come in the summer, we don't really use air conditioning) lights when it's dark? Snow removal? Garbage service? Do you pay PSE&G?  We do too, $125K every year.
  • You have insurance bills? So do we $54K

That's just a few of the items that I know I've never thought about when I sit here on Sunday but are real and require our support.

So in the spirit of stewardship we are asking all of US to help US pay OUR bills so we can keep OUR house open to EVERYONE. Will you join us? I hope so!

THIS MONDAY
meet author Ethan Gilsdorf  as 2009-2010 Trinity Reading Series  debuts with Fantasy Freaks and Gaming Geeks
Fantasy Freaks book

Come commune with your inner fantasy fan or gaming geek with Ethan Gilsdorf, author of the travel memoir / pop culture narrative FANTASY FREAKS AND GAMING GEEKS: An Epic Quest for Reality Among Role Players, Online Gamers, and Other Dwellers of Imaginary Realms.

The book is an exploration and celebration of fantasy and gaming subcultures. On a quest that begins in his own geeky teenage past and ends in our online gaming future, former D&D addict Ethan Gilsdorf (photo) crisscrosses America, the world, and other worlds-from Boston to Wisconsin, France to New Zealand, and Planet Earth to Middle-earth to the realm of Aggramar. He asks game-players and fantasy fans---old, young, male, female, able-bodied and disabled-what attracts them to fantasy worlds, and for what reasons, whether healthy, unhealthy, or in between. Ethan Gilsdorf, author

The event begins with a "geek trivia contest" with prizes that tests the audience's knowledge of all things Tolkien, Harry Potter, Dungeons & Dragons and more. Gilsdorf will then read an excerpt from "Fantasy Freaks and Gaming Geeks," and answer questions.  Reception to follow.  Monday, Oct. 19. 7:00 p.m. George Thomas Room.

St. Nicholas Bazaar

Paul Jeanes Winetasting HIP

Put the date of Friday, December 4th, on your calendar! Come out and party and  show your support  for Trinity and our outreach programs; it's a great way to start the season of giving!
This year, due to the recession,
we are not soliciting local businesses for donations to our St. Nick's Preview Party Auction.  Instead, we are looking  to the  parish to make the Preview Party and auction a success. What can you give? Be creative: can you give handyman skills, sewing or computer lessons, yoga, a cooking class, dinner or a wine tasting
at your home? Can you donate something bigger such as a ski,  country  or beach house for a week?  Or maybe  there is a piece of artwork in your  home that is in good condition but no longer seems  to  fit
your household. We are accepting donations until November 27th. Please contact Lynne Davis

Christmas Pageant for Children
Sunday, December 20th
at 4pm

2008 Christmas pageant group shot

Following last year's success, there will be a special Children's Christmas Pageant at Trinity on the Sunday before Christmas (20th December) at 4pm in the afternoon. The pageant is an opportunity for children to present the Christmas story in a dramatic way with words, music and dance. Performers will be in two age groups. There are more ambitious speaking and acting parts for children from Grades 5 to 8, and simpler singing and dancing parts for Pre-K to Grade 4.  Please let Sarah Gaventa know of children who would like to take part. It would be especially good to be able to identify children who have special gifts/interests/experience e.g. acting experience, playing an instrument, singing solos, dancing etc.

It is ESSENTIAL  that ALL the performers are able to attend the relevant rehearsals, so before signing up, PLEASE check out the schedule below to see that this will be possible. Of course, children who cannot take part as performers are warmly welcome to attend the pageant itself.
