Striving for Tithing Your Stewardship Campaign kicks off this Sunday
|
It is not going to
happen overnight, but our Trinity Community can
become a Tithing Community. Our Pledge Goal for 2010
is at least 3%, and we will strive to increase 1%
each year until we get there. - Robert Hurlbert, Stewardship Campaign Chairman
FAQ About Stewardship and Tithing
Question: What
is Stewardship?
Answer: From
the beginning of Creation, humans have been handed the responsibility for
taking care of God's world, both the environment in which we live, and the
beings that inhabit it. The causes we
care about - eliminating poverty, promoting education, providing health care,
protecting our air and water, ending violence, ending discrimination, demanding
justice and seeking peace - are what we do as God's appointed stewards.
Question: How do you become a steward in our Trinity
Community?
Answer: Stewardship is about committing to give your time
and pledging your resources to Trinity and supporting our mission.
Question: What is pledging?
Answer: Pledging is a commitment to
give Trinity a specified amount of money for the coming year. It is a
commitment to yourself and God to be an intentional giver.
Question: Why do we pledge?
Answer: To confirm Trinity's annual
budget for the next year. Just like a
corporation does fall budget planning for the next year, Trinity needs to do
the same. Our pledges allow Trinity to
create our annual budget so that it can operate and provide all of us with a
place of worship, provide help for the homeless, comfort for the bereaved, and
support for the sick. That is our
mission.
Question: How much money should we give?
Answer: The bible states a person should tithe or
allocate 10% of one's income. Our
Trinity Community can become a "Tithing Community". Our Pledge Goal for 2010 is at least 3%, and
we will strive to increase 1% each year until we get there.
Question: How and when do we pay?
Answer: Many ways.
Trinity provides envelopes for everyone to use on Sunday to put in the
plate. You can pick a payment schedule
that suits your financial situation. Some
parishioners make 12 monthly payments, some put a weekly payment in the plate
every Sunday, and some make one lump payment for the entire year.

A note on this Sunday's lectionary readings by Gordon Graham
|
When it's not a special Sunday of some kind, the Revised Common Lectionary gives us a
choice between 'Continuous' and 'Thematic' tracks. The Gospel is always the
same for both tracks, and the Epistle almost always so. But the Old Testament
and the Psalm differ. While the Thematic track aims to link all the Bible
readings in some way, the Continuous track lets us explore a particular book
over a few Sundays. This week is the first of four Sundays devoted to the Book of Job, one of oldest treatments of
a recurring question - why does God let terrible things happen to good people?
The book is almost as perplexing as the question it deals with, and these four
extracts are not really enough to understand it fully. So this is one of those
occasions when the Lectionary hopes to encourage us to read the whole book for
ourselves over the course of the month. If you do, you will find within it one
of the most beautiful passages in the whole Bible - Job 28, a reflection on
God's unfathomable wisdom.
The link between the readings on the Thematic track is
marriage and family life. A well known passage from Genesis in which Eve is
given to Adam because 'it is not good for the man to be alone' is matched with
the Gospel passage in which Jesus speaks against divorce, and stresses how much
we have to learn from children. The Epistle emphasizes the centrality of family
relationships - parent, child, brother, sister - in providing us with the right
kind of language in which to think about our relationship to God. Marriage and
divorce are difficult subjects. Our church has been grappling intensively with
them over the last few decades. Is consensual divorce where there is no
adultery permissible? Is marriage possible only between man and woman? These
are difficult, and as we know, divisive questions. Yet, somehow, we must
struggle to resolve them, and what this week's readings point to is the context
that makes that struggle so significant and compelling. The Psalmist marvels
that out of the whole creation God is specially mindful of human beings,
setting them 'little lower than the angels'. The Epistle repeats the Psalmists
words and underlines their astonishing nature. Part of the marvel lies in this:
God has made the human relationships in to which we are born one of the places
where we can discover the deepest insights into the Divine life of God -- Father,
Son and Holy Spirit -- and key to the way that we can hope to participate in
it. |
Ambient Photo sessions start this week! We want to be able to match your face to your name, so please sign up for a free photo and be in the new Trinity Photo Directory

And first up is our Junior Warden, Van Davis, along with his wife, Lynne. Mr. and Mrs. Davis are having their photos taken Friday, October 3rd, so we can be deleting this old photo of Van from his Vestry candidate-for-election days.
We're sure Van will miss this photo.
Parishioners can register for a photo online on the Trinity website.
Ambient has agreed to schedule taking pictures throughout the fall and even into the Thanksgiving weekend of
November 27th-29th, which allows our families to include students
home from college and grandparents visiting for the holiday. Photography can be
scheduled weekdays from 2pm-9pm, Saturday from noon- 7pm, or Sunday noon-6pm.

2009-2010 Trinity Reading Series debuts with Fantasy Freaks and Gaming Geeks on October 19th
|
Come commune with your inner
fantasy fan or gaming geek with Ethan Gilsdorf, author of the travel memoir /
pop culture narrative FANTASY FREAKS AND GAMING GEEKS: An Epic Quest for
Reality Among Role Players, Online Gamers, and Other Dwellers of Imaginary
Realms.
The book is an exploration and celebration of fantasy and gaming
subcultures. On a quest that begins in his own geeky teenage past and ends in
our online gaming future, former D&D addict Ethan Gilsdorf (photo) crisscrosses America,
the world, and other worlds-from Boston to Wisconsin, France to New Zealand, and
Planet Earth to Middle-earth to the realm of Aggramar. He asks game-players and
fantasy fans---old, young, male, female, able-bodied and disabled-what attracts
them to fantasy worlds, and for what reasons, whether healthy, unhealthy, or in
between.
The event begins with a "geek trivia contest" with prizes that tests
the audience's knowledge of all things Tolkien, Harry Potter, Dungeons &
Dragons and more. Gilsdorf will then read an excerpt from "Fantasy Freaks and
Gaming Geeks," and answer questions. Reception to follow. Monday, Oct. 19.
7:00 p.m. George Thomas Room.

Meet Carol Brooks Thomas, our new Parish Life Chairperson
|

|
Hi! I'm the new Parish Life Coordinator. I was born in Mercer Hospital, grew up in Titusville, and was raised Quaker. My
son Lee converted (from born-again atheist) when he was at Groton (his baptism
was Spring of his senior year at St. John's chapel) and then I started going to
church with him. I was pulled in by Trinity's music, the beauty of the church,
the beauty of the ritual, and a felt need to take communion. In 2007 I was
baptized at Trinity by Anne Marie Richards with Lee as my sponsor. (So my son is my
Godfather!) I like to cook and feed people so Parish Life is sort of a
natural.
I'm looking for ideas for new
events, ways to improve current events, and of course volunteers, cooks, and
bakers. I hope to make it fun and not too difficult for anyone. Please let me
know what you would like to do. (Email, call, or catch me at church.)
Thanks!!! Carol
609-895-1979 carolbrooksthomas@verizon.net
Carol, as you can see, is a real go-getter (She also volunteers at Church Clean-Up day, which by the way, is October 24th.)
