"The Trinity Community is stronger than it has ever been" - Robert Hurlbert 2009 Stewardship Chairman
|
The Rev. Paul Jeanes is very pleased to announce that Robert Hurlbert has volunteered to lead this year's
Trinity Church Stewardship campaign.
Robert and his
wife, Rhonda, have been members of Trinity
Church since 2002 and
have two children, Katherine (age 8) and Cole (age 4).
Robert and Rhonda contribute to the vitality of the Trinity community by
volunteering their time for Trinity's ministries. Robert teaches Journey-to-Aduthood (J2A) Christian
education to our 9th and 10th grade students and is a
member of Trinity's Usher Guild. Rhonda
is Trinity's Crisis Ministry liaison and volunteers her time in various Trinity
programs throughout the year.
Robert Hurlbert and Paul Jeanes will launch the stewardship campaign during the 8am, 9am and 11am services on October 4th, and make it the focus of the Adult Forum hour in Pierce Hall following the conclusion of the 9am service.
"I look
very forward to being this year's Stewardship Chair. The Trinity Community is stronger than it has
ever been, and all of us should feel truly blessed by what we are accomplishing
together."

A note on this Sunday's lectionary readings by Gordon Graham
|
At this time of year the Revised Common Lectionary (RCL), from
which our lessons are taken week by week, offers quite a few options. These
relate chiefly to the Old Testament lessons and the Psalm. Sometimes there is a
choice with respect to the Epistle, but the Gospel is always fixed.
This week
one OT lesson relates the final episode in the story of Esther, the beautiful
Queen who relied on her royal husband's love to subvert the malicious scheme by
which the King's adviser Haman planned the destruction of her people, the Jews.
The words of the Psalm appointed to be sung with it (Ps 124) reflect the
outcome - 'Let Israel now say; If the LORD had not been on our side, when
enemies rose up against us; Then would they have swallowed us up alive in their
fierce anger toward us".
The alternative OT lesson comes from the Book of Numbers and connects more
directly with the Epistle and Gospel. It too recounts a very human episode, one
of those many occasions when, in the course of their wilderness wanderings, the
Children of Israel complain about living conditions (this time the lack of
fresh meat) and accuse Moses of having led them to disaster rather than liberation.
Moses expresses to God the kind of exasperation that many clergy have often felt
about their congregations - Why have you given me sole spiritual responsibility
for these people?, In response to Moses' complaint, God appears directly to
seventy elders.
But the impact is short lived. Only two take up the task of
prophet. And yet Joshua complains about them! They are threatening Moses'
special position. Moses rebukes Joshua with words very similar to those of
Jesus in the Gospel reading. When John complains, "Teacher, we saw someone
casting out demons in your name, and we tried to stop him, because he was not
following us." Jesus replies, "Do
not stop him; for no one who does a deed of power in my name will be able soon
afterward to speak evil of me. Whoever is not against us is for us". One thing
we can learn is this. The task of maintaining and spreading the Christian faith
is so big and so important, it needs far more than just a few people. But by
the very same token, it is a task that those of us already at work on it have
to be willing to share. |

THIS SATURDAY Benjamin Franklin Frankly, a musical biography; at Trinity AT 7:30 pm
|
The work, Benjamin
Franklin Frankly, composed by Trinity parishioner Clive Muncaster in 2005, is a light classical piece and
spotlights Benjamin Franklin's life from his early years in Boston through his accomplishments as the
Ambassador in Philadelphia. Performances have already been held in Oxford, England
and in Philadelphia,
although this performance differs from those since it has been rewritten for a
string orchestra as opposed to a baroque trio.
In this performance, the Muncaster Music Makers, a non-profit organization, includes
local musicians from the Princeton area and
lead singers from the Trinity
Church choir as
vocalists. The role of Benjamin Franklin
is to be sung by baritone Matthew Singer who has gained distinction across the United States
as an Opera Singer.
The program will also include: Eine Kleine Nachtmusik by W.A.Mozart
Suggested ticket donation is $20 at the door.

2009-2010 Trinity Reading Series debuts with Fantasy Freaks and Gaming Geeks on October 19th
|
Come commune with your inner
fantasy fan or gaming geek with Ethan Gilsdorf, author of the travel memoir /
pop culture narrative FANTASY FREAKS AND GAMING GEEKS: An Epic Quest for
Reality Among Role Players, Online Gamers, and Other Dwellers of Imaginary
Realms.
The book is an exploration and celebration of fantasy and gaming
subcultures. On a quest that begins in his own geeky teenage past and ends in
our online gaming future, former D&D addict Ethan Gilsdorf (photo) crisscrosses America,
the world, and other worlds-from Boston to Wisconsin, France to New Zealand, and
Planet Earth to Middle-earth to the realm of Aggramar. He asks game-players and
fantasy fans---old, young, male, female, able-bodied and disabled-what attracts
them to fantasy worlds, and for what reasons, whether healthy, unhealthy, or in
between.
The event begins with a "geek trivia contest" with prizes that tests
the audience's knowledge of all things Tolkien, Harry Potter, Dungeons &
Dragons and more. Gilsdorf will then read an excerpt from "Fantasy Freaks and
Gaming Geeks," and answer questions. Reception to follow. Monday, Oct. 19.
7:00 p.m. George Thomas Room.

| Retreat with Dick and Juliana at Kirkridge October 30-November 1
|
Scripture repeatedly calls us to various kinds of awakening. However, along the pathways to spiritual
transformation we inevitably meet some impediments, be they blindness, anxiety,
doubt, hardness of heart, or despair. During this retreat, we will explore
resources from Holy Scripture, from poetry, art, dreams and personal experience
to guide us beyond these impediments toward faith and
thanksgiving.
Each one of five sessions will include worship and conversation. In
addition to our time together, we will spend time apart in silence for solitary
reflection.
We hope that our time away will be a 'homecoming' rather than a retreat
as we awaken more readily to the presence of God in our daily lives.
Everyone is welcome! To register for this retreat, please contact Kirkridge's registrar, Janet. You may email her or call her at 610-599-4602. She is usually there from 9:00AM to
3:00PM weekdays. Thank you for your interest.

For more information about the church photo
directory, please call (609-924-2277) or email Annie Thomas.
No, this isn't a Trinity family, but Ambient does suggest we all wear dark clothing without busy patterns, just like this mystery family.

- Please email Tracy a short description (in a Word document) of the mission of your committee
- Please go online to the Trinity website and schedule a group photo to be taken of your committee by our publisher, Ambient.
And after all these 'pleases', a big thank you is in order to Tracy Patterson
