Trinity Church E-Pistle September 17, 2009
We've come a long way
Trinity Church
Paul's favorite picture

A couple of weeks ago I had the pleasure of having lunch with one of our Trinity faithful.  We began to share how fast the past year had gone.  Time has indeed flown by.  Then my friend said, "When I was sitting in church last Sunday, I looked around and began to think about the past year.  If you would have told me that in one year we would have taken out the platform from the central crossing, turned the pews around in the back of the church, created a soft space for children, hired a new priest as a Christian Education director, increased the hours of our youth leader, and our priest would be preaching from in front of the altar and not in the pulpit...I would have said, 'No way!'  But, I looked around and thought, 'This is good.  This is really good.'

It has been a good year and we have come a long way.  There is a wonderful spirit of life and vitality.  But (there's so often a "but"), we have much more to do.  We've taken the first critical steps, but our journey has only just begun.  The real work awaits us.  The work that will stretch us, challenge us and call us to ministry we never imagined.  This is a transformative time in our culture and a life changing time at Trinity Church.  I am very excited about the work of God at Trinity and I hope you are equally as excited!

As we move forward I recall the scripture that I had read at our Celebration of New Ministry. The Lord is speaking to Joshua, "I hereby command you: Be strong and courageous; do not be frightened or dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go."  (Joshua 1:9)

Trinity Church, we've come a long way, but we've only just begun.  Let us continue on with courage and holy expectation for God is with us wherever we go.

Peace,
Paul+

New writing class led Lauren B. Davis
begins November 3rd
Lauren B. Davis

THE PROSE OF YOUR DREAMS- For three Tuesday evenings in November, Lauren B. Davis (photo) will be leading adult creative writing classes at Trinity Church.  Based on Robert Olen Butler's book, FROM WHERE YOU DREAM, students will learn how to create emotion in their work, and do away with useless generality and abstraction.  We will learn to write through the senses, which is the foundation of all good creative writing.   Students will be expected to participate in in-class writing exercises. Open to everyone.  Cost: $100. (Check should be made out to Lauren B. Davis)  Place:  Flemer Library.  Please call Lauren at 609-430-0321 to register.  Class size is limited to 10 students so please register early.  November 3, 10, 17.  6:30-8:00 p.m.
A note on this Sunday's lectionary readings by Gordon Graham
Gordon Graham
The words 'childish' and childlike' are very similar, yet there is a huge and important difference in their meaning. It is a difference that takes on special significance in the context of this week's readings. Both the Old Testament and the Epistle continue the theme of previous weeks - the nature of wisdom, its importance and its elusiveness. The Gospel for this week also takes up an earlier theme - the inability of the disciples to fathom Jesus' warning that the 'prophet' they have followed for three years, and to whom they have more or less given over their daily lives, is going to be betrayed and killed like a criminal. That much, perhaps, they could have grasped, albeit with the deepest reluctance, but that this was necessary was more than they could understand. All this serves as a preliminary to the touching moment when Jesus takes a child in his arms.

In his letter to the Corinthians St Paul contrasts wisdom with childishness. Here, in this passage from Mark, Jesus makes a certain kind of childlike innocence the pre-requisite for understanding God's purpose of salvation. Situated as we are centuries later, we are in a position to see and understand what the disciples at this stage in the Gospel story could not. But it is no less difficult for us than for them to strip away all the assumptions and presuppositions that we bring to hearing the Word of God. Children in their innocence often have a certain honesty and simplicity that makes them open to the wonder of things. Rightly, the process growing up requires us to put away childish things, but it also brings with it the risk that we will lose the childlike openness to wonder which is a pre-condition of true wisdom.

Benjamin Franklin Frankly, a musical biography; at Trinity on
September 26th, 7:30 pm
Ben Franklin

The work, Benjamin Franklin Frankly, composed by Trinity parishioner Clive Muncaster in 2005, is a light classical piece and spotlights Benjamin Franklin's life from his early years in Boston through his accomplishments as the Ambassador in Philadelphia.  Performances have already been held in Oxford, England and in Philadelphia, although this performance differs from those since it has been rewritten for a string orchestra as opposed to a baroque trio.

In this performance, the Muncaster Music Makers, a non-profit organization, includes local musicians from the Princeton area and lead singers from the Trinity Church choir as vocalists.  The role of Benjamin Franklin is to be sung by baritone Matthew Singer who has gained distinction across the United States as an Opera Singer.

The program will also include: Eine Kleine Nachtmusik by W.A.Mozart

Suggested ticket donation is $20 at the door.

2009-2010 Trinity Reading Series  debuts with Fantasy Freaks and Gaming Geeks on October 19th
Fantasy Freaks book

Come commune with your inner fantasy fan or gaming geek with Ethan Gilsdorf, author of the travel memoir / pop culture narrative FANTASY FREAKS AND GAMING GEEKS: An Epic Quest for Reality Among Role Players, Online Gamers, and Other Dwellers of Imaginary Realms.

The book is an exploration and celebration of fantasy and gaming subcultures. On a quest that begins in his own geeky teenage past and ends in our online gaming future, former D&D addict Ethan Gilsdorf (photo) crisscrosses America, the world, and other worlds-from Boston to Wisconsin, France to New Zealand, and Planet Earth to Middle-earth to the realm of Aggramar. He asks game-players and fantasy fans---old, young, male, female, able-bodied and disabled-what attracts them to fantasy worlds, and for what reasons, whether healthy, unhealthy, or in between. Ethan Gilsdorf, author

The event begins with a "geek trivia contest" with prizes that tests the audience's knowledge of all things Tolkien, Harry Potter, Dungeons & Dragons and more. Gilsdorf will then read an excerpt from "Fantasy Freaks and Gaming Geeks," and answer questions.  Reception to follow.  Monday, Oct. 19. 7:00 p.m. George Thomas Room.

Retreat with Dick and Juliana at Kirkridge October 30-November 1
woods

Scripture repeatedly calls us to various kinds of awakening.  However, along the pathways to spiritual transformation we inevitably meet some impediments, be they blindness, anxiety, doubt, hardness of heart, or despair. During this retreat, we will explore resources from Holy Scripture, from poetry, art, dreams and personal experience
to guide us beyond these impediments toward faith and thanksgiving.

Each one of five sessions will include worship and conversation. In addition to our time together, we will spend time apart in silence for solitary reflection.

We hope that our time away will be a 'homecoming' rather than a retreat as we awaken more readily to the presence of God in our daily lives.

Everyone is welcome! To register for this retreat, please contact Kirkridge's registrar, Janet. You may email her  or call her at 610-599-4602.  She is usually there from 9:00AM to 3:00PM weekdays. Thank you for your interest.

Children's Worship and Sunday School Logistics

Logistics for getting children to and from Children's Worship and Sunday school are slightly different this year.  Children's Worship will occur at the 9:00 service.  Instead of bringing children directly to the Children's Chapel, please bring your children to the Narthex of the church.  This way they can see where you are sitting and find you a bit more easily before communion.  The children will gather in the Narthex before the service and process in with the clergy.  They will then be led directly to the Children's Chapel and return before Eucharist.

If children are going to Sunday School directly from the 9:00 service, they will gather during the final hymn in the major crossing in front of the altar, NOT in the back of the church.  Sunday School teachers and parents who want to help their child find their classroom are also invited to gather at this time.  Children will then be led to their classrooms.  If your child is going to Sunday School but attending the 11:00 service, please have them in their classrooms NO LATER THAN 10:05.  The Sunday School hour is shortened this year, because of the 11:00 service, so getting children to Sunday School on time is extra- important this year.  Sunday School will end around 10:50.

We look forward to having your children in our Sunday School and Children's Worship
 programs this year!

The Russian Icon
workshop at Trinity:
Or, what
 Maureen McCormick
did on her summer vacation

Icon workshop in progress
What I did on my summer vacation
This year's icon workshop was the largest in thirteen years of icon workshops at Trinity Church. In fact, it was the largest such workshop held in the United States since the founding of the Prosopon School of Iconology (www.prosoponschool.org)! Forty students came together to study this ancient liturgical art under the instruction of Vladislav Andrejev, master iconographer and founder of the Prosopon School, and his son, Nikita Andrejev, with daughter, Melanie Andrejev, translating lectures and assisting. Students came from as far away as Texas and Louisiana, with one student returning for her second workshop from Argentina.

About half of the class were taking the workshop for the first time and wrote an icon of the Archangel Michael. The rest of us were writing the ne plus ultra of icons: Andrei Rublev's Trinity. Based on an earlier icon depicting the Hospitality of Abraham (Genesis 18), Rublev removed the figures of Abraham and Sarah to create a sublime symbolic depiction of the mystery of the Trinity. It was with great humility and some anxiety that we attempted this icon. Because I have chosen to make my icon large (almost two by three feet), it will be many months before it is complete, but eventually I hope it may find an appropriate home within the walls of Trinity Church

If you would like more information about the annual workshop - for which previous artistic experience is absolutely not required -- please don't hesitate to get in touch.
