Trinity Church E-Pistle August 6, 2009
Lights! Cameras! Action!
When Hollywood
came to Trinity Church
Margaret Hamilton. wicked witchYou know the green face, and you love hearing her say the line "I'll get you, my pretty!", but could you have recognized her sitting in front of you at Trinity Church, reciting the Nicene Creed? Margaret Hamilton, icon witch from The Wizard of Oz, worshipped at Trinity when she came to visit her daughter, according to parishioner Jim Faus. This summer's blockbuster action movie Transformers was filmed, several scenes at least, here in Princeton, as was the 2001 Oscar-winner A Beautiful Mind, starring Russell Crowe as mathematician John Nash and Jennifer Connelly as his wife, Alicia Nash. Now Trinity Church has a connection to A Beautiful Mind in that Alicia Nash is a member of our parish, but today we want to take you back to the summer when the 1994 romantic comedy IQ  was being made on Mercer Street, starring Meg Ryan and, as Albert Einstein, the late Walter Matthau. Parishioner Nancy Metcalf was our parish administrator then, and we thank her for this story:
 IQ poster
When the film IQ was being filmed in Princeton 15 years ago, Trinity played host to the cast - which included Meg Ryan and Tim Robbins - and crew.   They were no ordinary tenants.   Pierce Hall and the kitchen were rented for two weeks full time, although they only used it at noon on days when they were shooting. Fortunately it was during the summer lull. They brought their own air-conditioning - great aluminum tubes with a compressor to blow cool air into Pierce.  Everyday a truck drove up to Newark to pick up their California food for lunch.  No wonder it is expensive to make movies.

Our staff was treated most graciously.  We were provided with lunch with the company every day there was filming.  There was a pecking order.   Camera men, technicians and other crew ate first as they had strict union working hours and only a limited time to eat.  Cast, directors, producers and the Trinity staff then ate.  It was all very work a-day.  Even Walter Matthau got in line like everyone else and sat at any open space at a table.   We all ate, chatted and returned to our various jobs.

A happy time with most usual tenants!

To volunteer with our
Children's Worship this September, please call Sarah today

Do you like working with children?  Are you interested in the worshiping lives of children?  We are hoping to create a group of adults or older teens who will take turns leading Children's Worship during the 9:00 service this fall.  We already have three volunteers, which is wonderful!  The more volunteers we have, the less often volunteers will need to lead Children's Worship.  We have a schedule, the music, ideas and outlines for the children's sermon, now all we need is you! If you are interested in volunteering, or if you have questions, please call The Rev. Sarah Kinney Gaventa in the church office (609-924-2277) or email her at gaventas@trinityprinceton.org.
Would you like to extend a welcoming hand?  Consider joining our Newcomers Welcoming Committee.

The Newcomers Welcoming Committee is beginning to take shape.  A newcomers' packet is being edited, people are starting to volunteer and now all we need is YOU!  Whether you want to devote a few minutes a month making welcoming phone calls, staff a welcome table on Sunday mornings, or help through helping to throw Newcomer Dinners, there is a job for you!

If you have a passion for hospitality and would like to help expand Trinity's newcomer's program, please contact The Rev. Sarah Kinney Gaventa at gaventas@trinityprinceton.org.

HUNGER PAINS:
Feeding People
in Central New Jersey
The Crisis Ministry Food Store
Be sure to attend the Historical Society of Princeton's compelling exhibit on hunger in our area. Mounted in collaboration with the Crisis Ministry, Mercer Street Friends Food Bank, and Trenton Area Soup Kitchen, its combination of art, hard facts, and interactive displays sheds light on the issue of hunger and how it is being addressed. The HSP has even incorporated a food drive for the three participating organizations.

Hunger Pains runs through August 16 at 158 Nassau Street, Princeton.

Want to know more? Our own parishioner, acolyte Krystal Knapp, wrote about the exhibit in the Trenton Times; you can find her article online here. You can also visit the Historical Society's website here.
