Meet the Rev. Sarah Kinney Gaventa THIS SUNDAY
|

My name is
Sarah Kinney Gaventa (pronounced Guh-ven-tah, with the emphasis on the first
syllable.) and I am looking forward to being the new assistant rector at
Trinity! My areas of focus will be: Newcomer Ministries and Christian
Education for children in Pre-K to 5th grade. For the last four years I have
been serving at Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Greenwood, Virginia
as the associate rector for Christian Education, where I also helped start our
Newcomer program. My passions in the Church are making all persons feel
welcomed and helping people, particularly children, learn more about God and
their own spiritual lives. I feel very blessed to be offered a position at
Trinity getting to do just that! As a woman, people in church often don't know
what to call me. I know many women priests like to go by
"Mother", but I prefer adults to call me by my first name and
children to call me "Miss Sarah" or "Pastor Sarah". I come from a
family of educators. My parents met at the University
of Southern California in the mid 60s
and taught elementary school in Los
Angeles together, where I was born. When I was
one, they took jobs with the Department of Defense Dependent School System
(DoDDS) and moved to Ludwigsburg,
Germany.
My father, Martin, was a music teacher (and
later school principal) and my mother, Pamela, was an elementary school
teacher. (My mother died suddenly of a heart arrhythmia nine years ago.
My father has since remarried a lovely woman, Janet, who was an old
family friend.) We moved a couple times, but always within Germany.
I did not live full time in the states until I went to college at University of Richmond,
in Richmond, VA. I have lived in Virginia
ever since, and even went to seminary at Virginia Theological Seminary in Alexandria. (Where I had
the pleasure of being Anne Marie's classmate.) I am new to New Jersey, but my husband, Matthew, spent his high
school years in Princeton. His mother,
Beverly, is a professor of New Testament at Princeton Theological Seminary and
his father, Bill, serves as the Director of Community and Congregational
Supports at the Elizabeth M. Boggs Center on Developmental Disabilities, and Associate
Professor, UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. When Matt discerned
a call to be a Presbyterian pastor, we decided that going to Princeton
Theological Seminary made sense for a lot of reasons, not the least of which
was being closer to his parents and being closer to my sister, Marianne, who
lives in New York City. Marianne
is just finishing her Masters in International Educational Development at Columbia, and will be teaching at the Harlem Link Charter School
in Harlem, where many of the children are
immigrants from a diverse group of countries. Matthew, my
husband, and I were set up on a blind date by parishioners at Emmanuel about
six months after I began my ministry there. Five months later we were
engaged, and now we've been married over two years. When he lived in Princeton, Matt went to Nassau Presbyterian Church, where
his mother still attends, and is as strong of a Presbyterian as I am an
Episcopalian. We have always gone to different churches, but do enjoy
attending church together once or twice a year when we get the chance.
About 50% of the people we tell this to ask us, "What are you going
to do when you have kids?" Our answer, "We'll cross that bridge
when we get to it. And, thank goodness for church nurseries!"
Together, we own Henry, a spaniel-shepherd mix, who alternately delights
us and tries our patience. We love to hike, cook, spend time with
friends, read, go to movies and the theater, and watch TV. We're big fans
of LOST and How I Met Your Mother, and I cannot wait for Glee!
to premiere in the fall. We've just returned from an
amazing two week vacation in New Zealand, so just let us know if we are
completely insufferable when we go on and on about that incredible country. I
like to quilt, crochet, write, and in my spare time I am the assistant editor
of Fidelia's Sisters, the online magazine of The Young Clergy Women
Project. (You can check it out at www.youngclergywomen.org.)
If you're curious about my preaching, all the text of my past sermons are
archived at www.sarahgaventa.com.
I look
forward to beginning my ministry with you July 13th, getting to hear your many
stories of life at Trinity, and joining alongside you, Paul and Anne Marie in
the important work that is going on in your midst.
Blessings, Sarah

Crisis Mininstry Needs another Refrigerator in Princeton
|
Dear Friends at Trinity:
Did you know that demand for the food
provided right down the street in our office at Nassau Presbyterian is up this
year from 110 households per month to 190? In order to properly serve neighbors
in need who turn to the Crisis Ministry in Princeton, we are in serious need of
more refrigerator space to keep produce, eggs, and other perishable foods fresh for families.
Can you help with a donation of
$2000 for a new refrigerator or by donating a good used (and energy-efficient) refrigerator/freezer?
It would help us tremendously. Please contact me if you can help
or if you have any questions.
I thank you in the meantime for
your ongoing generosity,
Jarrett Kerbel, Executive Director

The Episcopal Church's 76th General Convention July 8 - 17 Anaheim, California
|
 |
Every three years The Episcopal Church gathers at General Convention. A unique feature of our polity, General Convention is the governing body of The Episcopal Church. The Convention is a bicameral legislature that
includes the House of Deputies and the House of Bishops. Trinity parishioner, Noreen Duncan serves in the House of Deputies this year as part of the Diocese of New Jersey's deputation. The work at
Convention is carried out by deputies and bishops representing each
diocese. During its triennial meeting deputies and bishops consider a
wide range of important matters facing the Church. Sometimes the work of GC gets a good deal of coverage in the popular press, but more often than not the faithful work of Bishops and Deputies goes on out of the spotlight. If you would like to follow the action at GC, or learn more about what it is, how it works and what legislation is being considered this year, here are some online resources:

Trinity Organist Tom Sheehan Wins National Award |
 |
You may not have known that Tom
Sheehan won the local Philadelphia AGO (American Guild of Organists) Competition
earlier this year. The USA is split into 9 AGO Regions.
Region III is the Mid Atlantic Region. The winners of the local chapters of
Region III competed recently in Richmond, Virginia. Tom WON First
Place! This means that he will perform a recital and compete at the National AGO Convention in Washington, DC next summer - early July. He will compete
against the winners of the other 8 Regions.
This is really wonderful for
Tom, and for the prestige of our music program here at Trinity Church. Congratulations Tom, we're very proud of you!
Tom played the piano at Drumthwacket for us at our recent 175th Trinity Church Anniversary Gala.

Eagle Scout Awards to Marcell Zimanyi and Brad States
|
 |
The highest rank you can attain as a Boy Scout is Eagle Scout; once an Eagle Scout, you are an Eagle Scout for life. The late Gerald Ford, the 38th president of the United States, often mentioned with much pride that he was an Eagle Scout. So too now are Trinity members Brad States and Marcell Zimanyi. Marcell Antal Zimanyi became an Eagle Scouit on June 20th with Boy Scout Troop 46 in
the Montgomery Township. To earn his Eagle Scout project, he enhanced the Montgomery Trail System with 15
wooden planks, a bench and trail signs. He was also a Senior Patrol Leader of
the troop of over 100 scouts for a year. He and his crew worked over 300 man hours
on the project. Brad States, who volunteered 117 hours of community service, earned his Eagle Scout award for researching the age and species of the trees on our Trinity Church property, and providing each tree with an ID sign. Brad's Court of Honor ceremony was also held on June 20th, with Troop 759 of Plainsboro. Brad joined that troop as a Cub Scout in 1996. Congratulations to both of these young gentlemen on their hard-earned and very prestigious awards.
