Spring is in the Air!
|
| Spring
showers are definitely here! There's no
question about that. Trees and flowers
are blooming. People are out in their
yards planting and working. It's a
wonderful time of year. For the first
time this season, we had the windows of the house opened wide to let the spring
air in and the breeze to pass through.
The house has a completely different feel when the windows are
open. The "stale" air of the winter can
find its way out and the smells and feeling of spring can find their way
in. Something fresh, something new, our
senses come alive in a renewed way.
So too it
is with our souls. We have seasons of
winter. We close the windows and
"hunker" down to endure the cold and dark.
But, Easter comes. Alleluias
resound. New life blooms. Baptismal waters nourish. I invite you in this season of new life to
open the windows of your soul and allow the gentle breeze of the Holy Spirit to
enter in. Open the windows to let out
the stale air of bitterness or anger, of despair or jealousy and allow the
winds of life, the fragrance of hope, the gentle breeze of God's love to renew
you.
This is a
wonderful time of year and we live in such a beautiful place. We are indeed blessed. Throw open the windows. Let in the gentle and life giving breeze of
the Spirit. Open yourself to new life
and new possibilities. I think you'll be
amazed by the beauty and gift of that which will bloom in your soul. Spring is in the air!
Peace,
Paul+

| A Thank You from Crisis Ministry
|

To our Trinity friends,
We are so thankful to you for your involvement in
wonderful gatherings of the last two weekends (April 25 and May 3) that helped
neighbors in need who are served by the Crisis Ministry.
Footprints 2009, chaired
for the second year by Beth Fitzgerald, featured its first food collection and
run, along with about 200 walkers and runners, including Paul Jeanes, and still
managed to be the smoothest we've ever experienced! Committee support from
Reaney Kunkler, Leslie Linnehan, Ildiko Antal, and Tom Cooper, who produced the
printed materials, and great participation and support from Trinity
parishioners and their friends, families, and colleagues, helped Footprints to
raise nearly $16,000 so far (the contributions are still coming in). Thank you!
The concert featuring Handel's Coronation Anthems performed by the combined choirs of Trinity Church and Church of the Redeemer Bryn
Mawr was beautiful in two ways: its transcendent music and its giving spirit.
We are grateful to Tom Whittemore and to the choirs for generously donating the
proceeds amounting to some $2,000 to Crisis Ministry's hunger and homelessness
prevention programs.
-The steering committee, staff, and volunteers of
the Crisis
Ministry.

| Eric Garner, Ready to Help!
|
 Hello
Trinity Church,
My name is Eric Garner, and I am a first year student at the
seminary across the street. You may have
seen me about the church with growing frequency over this last year, and
hopefully you will see me even more frequently throughout next school year as I
intern here.
Being a second year seminarian recently out of my
undergraduate college, I am not particularly abundant in resources. However, I am fortunate to have my tuition
covered by the seminary, thus seriously cutting down on the amount of loans I
have needed to take out for my education.
My largest expense here is paying for my room and board throughout the year,
what's more, so long as I live on campus I am required to purchase the seminary
meal plan.
And here is where I make a request of you. I was hoping that if any of you who live
close the church would be willing to take a seminarian into your home. I would be more than happy to discuss ways in
which I might be able to help with chores, watching children, or others ways in
which to contribute to the household.
Thank you for reading through this message.
Go with God.

Author Kelly McMasters to Read May 15th Trinity Church Reading Series
|
 Kelly
McMasters will read from her new book, Welcome to Shirley: A Memoir from an
Atomic Town on Friday, May 15th, 7:00 p.m. in the George Thomas
Room at Trinity.
McMasters' latest book demonstrates powerfully that-even with the evidence on their
side-justice is elusive, particularly when it involves a town that everyone,
including those who live there, regards as disposable. Kelly McMasters' essays and
articles have appeared in such places as The New York Times, The Washington
Post Magazine, Newsday, Elle Décor, and Time Out New York. She teaches writing at Columbia University
and mediabistro.com and is the co-director of the KGB Nonfiction Reading Series
in the East Village.
All are
welcome to the reading--admission is free and a reception will follow.
Thank you to Lauren B. Davis, Trinity Church's Writer-in-Residence, for arranging another wonderful evening. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Lauren at
609-430-0321. |
Gordon Graham's Notes on This Sunday's Readings
|
 This week three much loved
passages make up the readings. The first tells the arresting story of an
encounter between a curious Ethiopian and Phillip the Evangelist (not Phillip
the Disciple). The second is from the most frequently quoted Epistle not by Paul
- the first letter of John, which boldly and unqualifiedly asserts that 'God is
love'. In the Gospel passage, Jesus uses the metaphor of the True Vine to
describe his divine role, a metaphor almost as deeply engrained as the metaphor
of the Good Shepherd (from last week). But how do these familiar passages
relate to each other? The answer is that together they reflect three
fundamental truths about Jesus that lie at the heart of the Christian faith.
First, Jesus is the suffering servant to whom Isaiah, the greatest of all the
Jewish prophets, looked for Israel's
salvation. Second, God and love are so deeply intertwined that even a 'sheep
led to the slaughter' is a far more adequate means, and expression, of God's
saving power than any 'conquering hero' would be. Third we will only be
transformed into the image of the God of love if we allow our lives to become
wholly dependent for their vitality on life in Christ. Apart from Christ we
'can do nothing', and may as well be withered branches, at most worth throwing
on a fire. God is love, but the price of divine love (in human terms) is high.
That is what Jesus showed, and what human beings often struggle to acknowledge. |

THIS SUNDAY Next Trinity Task Force Committee Report is on Finance & The Website
|
|
The Parish Task Force Committees that were formed last
fall continue their presentations on their work and findings. Each Sunday we will
hear two committees, each being given twenty-five minutes to appear. As our
rector Paul Jeanes stated in a message to the committees, "This is
to give an opportunity for the parish community to see your work and engage in
a process of conversation. This is not to re-open the debates, but rather
to present your work and findings." Thank you, thank you to all the parishioners who have
volunteered on these committees;your proposals and recommendations will be on the
agenda for the next Vestry retreat, where they will be prioritized and evaluated.

| Trinity Rummage Raises over $23,000 for Outreach! |
 |
|
A cheer went up from the rummage crowd when Reg Bishop appeared at the Pierce Hall entrance
door at 9am (he's used to hearing that), but this year's sale was different for our 87-year old chairman. He
saw a new rector, Paul Jeanes, walk down
the steps to stand eye-level with the 350 plus shoppers to greet and shaketheir hands as they entered. Here are
our favorite statistics from this year's sale: 25 people in line at 6:30am.; 350
shoppers arrived by 9am.; 163 Trinity members (and non-members) volunteered
over the 3-day sale and confounding all reports about a recession, costume
jewelry and pocketbook sales increased to $1280!

Icon Workshop at Trinity July 6-11, 2009
|
 |
The
Prosopon School of Iconology (www.prosoponschool.org) returns to
Trinity to conduct the 13th annual workshop. Students will "write"
icons using ancient techniques and natural materials rich with symbolic meaning:
carved wood boards, gesso made from chalk and marble dust, finely ground clay,
23 karat gold leaf, and ground mineral pigments in an emulsion made from egg
yolk. As the technical production of an icon is inextricable from its underlying
theology, equal emphasis will be given to introducing students to the mystical
theology of the eastern Orthodox Church.
As
iconography is as much a contemplative form of prayer as an artistic discipline,
previous artistic experience is absolutely not necessary! The workshop
will consist of six full-day sessions (9:00 am to 4:00 pm each day), during
which time each first-time student will complete an icon.
For more information
or to receive registration materials, please contact Maureen McCormick (email
preferred: mmccorm@princeton.edu, or call 609 258
3766 during the week). But please don't wait: the workshop is filling up
quickly!
