The Kentucky Derby is Saturday!
|
|
You
didn't think I could let this week go by and not mention the Kentucky
Derby...did
you? The fastest two minutes in
sports. Beautiful horses, a mint julep
in hand, the excitement of 150,000 cheering race fans, the sights, the sounds, the
people, the energy. The Kentucky Derby
is a one of a kind event and a grand occasion.
And...it's all for a two minute race.
Two minutes, that's it. Weeks,
months, even years in the making for a Derby
champion and in two minutes, a horse's fate is decided.
Well,
believe it or not, the Kentucky Derby offers a life lesson in the way of
comparison. Our lives are not the
fastest two minutes in sports. Live is
not for the sprinter, but rather for the distance runner. Life is long and takes strength and endurance.
Whenever
I think about the "race" of life, I think about Hebrews 12:1-2
"Therefore, since we are
surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight
and the sin that clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race
that is set before us, 2looking
to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith."
Though
the Derby is a
wonderful sporting event, it is not a model for life. We are to "run with perseverance the race
that is set before us" and it is not a run for the roses, nor for gold or
fame. It is a run for service and
witness to Christ. It is a race for hope and love. Like the Derby there is a "cloud of witnesses," but
not fans in the stands, rather we have saints in heaven cheering us on. Let us never forget that in all and through
all we are to keep our eyes on Christ for he will be with us every step of the
way and he will lead us safely home.
This
weekend, I do hope to find the time to hear "My Old Kentucky Home," to see the Run
for the Roses, to sip a glass of Kentucky
champagne (i.e. bourbon) and all the while I'll be dreaming of making it home,
not to Kentucky,
but home in presence of God in Glory everlasting.
Lord God, guide us
and give us strength that we may keep our eyes on you and run the race of life
with courage and strength, with hope and love, until you at last may lead us
home. Amen.
In Christ, Paul+

|
We are
fortunate to have Dr. Don Thomas return to Trinity and visit us on Tuesday, May 5th, to
discuss his and his wife Mary's work in the African nation Malawi, and on the Millennium Development Goals which the National Church has embraced and which all of us
are called to support by our Presiding Bishop, Katharine Jefferts Schori. The
presentation will be at 7pm, May 5th, in the George Thomas room.
In his
presentations, Don shares experiences and photographs that show the MDGs at
work and how GAIA(Global AIDS Interfaith Alliance) helps the people of Malawi save lives by turning their
dying villages into sustaining, nourishing communities where women can regain
their own power and where children can grow up with hope.

| Eric Garner, Ready to Help!
|

Hello
Trinity Church,
My name is Eric Garner, and I am a first year student at the
seminary across the street. You may have
seen me about the church with growing frequency over this last year, and
hopefully you will see me even more frequently throughout next school year as I
intern here.
Being a second year seminarian recently out of my
undergraduate college, I am not particularly abundant in resources. However, I am fortunate to have my tuition
covered by the seminary, thus seriously cutting down on the amount of loans I
have needed to take out for my education.
My largest expense here is paying for my room and board throughout the year,
what's more, so long as I live on campus I am required to purchase the seminary
meal plan.
And here is where I make a request of you. I was hoping that if any of you who live
close the church would be willing to take a seminarian into your home. I would be more than happy to discuss ways in
which I might be able to help with chores, watching children, or others ways in
which to contribute to the household.
Thank you for reading through this message.
Go with God.

Author Kelly McMasters to Read May 15th Trinity Church Reading Series
|
 Kelly
McMasters will read from her new book, Welcome to Shirley: A Memoir from an
Atomic Town on Friday, May 15th, 7:00 p.m. in the George Thomas
Room at Trinity.
McMasters' latest book demonstrates powerfully that-even with the evidence on their
side-justice is elusive, particularly when it involves a town that everyone,
including those who live there, regards as disposable. Kelly McMasters' essays and
articles have appeared in such places as The New York Times, The Washington
Post Magazine, Newsday, Elle Décor, and Time Out New York. She teaches writing at Columbia University
and mediabistro.com and is the co-director of the KGB Nonfiction Reading Series
in the East Village.
All are
welcome to the reading--admission is free and a reception will follow.
Thank you to Lauren B. Davis, Trinity Church's Writer-in-Residence, for arranging another wonderful evening. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Lauren at
609-430-0321. |
Allan King Sends His Greetings and Notes on This Sunday's Readings
|

In the Acts lesson we learn today
how Peter addressed the religious leaders in Jerusalem. Challenged by them to explain how
they were causing miraculous healings, Peter tells them it is because of the
name of Jesus of Nazareth, whom they had crucified, and whom God had raised from
the dead. This startling reply is among the earliest records of Peter's
preaching. It gives us a picture of the courage and persuasive message of the
early disciples. The St. John of Epistle amplifies how he believes this works.
It is by love. God's love for us that he lay down His life and then our love for
Him in truth and action. We should believe in the name of Jesus and love one
another. St.
John of the Gospel gives us the famous passage about the
Good Shepherd in which Jesus likens Himself to the faithful shepherd who cares
for his sheep and knows them all. Here Jesus explicitly claims that the command
to lay down His life came from the Father. These three readings show the early
Church trying to grapple with how to understand what Jesus' Death and
Resurrection meant. What was going on in all of that? What did God do? What
did Jesus as man do? How did the disciples acquire healing
power.
