Listening Hearts
|
|
It was almost
twenty years ago when my spirit was so very restless and my soul was being
tugged. I wasn't comfortable in my own
skin and felt as if there was something missing. I had a job, good friends and was on the
"right" track; everything seemed to be in place. Why did I struggle so? Why did I feel so much dis-ease? Well, God was at work in my life, but I
wasn't ready to listen. I felt quite
confident that I knew the path I was to take which was that of a businessman, or
perhaps entrepreneur, climbing the ladder of success and accumulating all the
outward and visible signs of achievement.
But, God
had something else in mind. I was
searching for the right path, but I was listening to the world with my ego, not
listening to God with my heart. God was
calling me, sometimes in a whisper, sometimes with a shout. It took me a while, but finally I heard and
began to listen. Believe it or not,
others heard God calling me, before I heard the call. Well, you know what happened. Here I am, ordained to the priesthood and now
serving as your rector.
This
Sunday is Passion and Purpose
Sunday. This is to be a time when we
intentionally listen with our hearts to the voice of the Holy Spirit. Where is God calling you? Where is God challenging you? Is God calling you into a deeper commitment
to service in the church and perhaps even to ordained ministry?
Wherever
you are on your journey of life and faith, I invite you to a place of openness
and willingness. Listen, listen not with
your ears nor ego, but with your heart, your soul. Hear what the Spirit is saying to you in this
season of your life. Open yourself to
the amazing possibilities that God has in store for you. Open yourself to doing things you never
thought you would. Open yourself to trust
and follow God in a way you never thought you could. Open yourself to passion for the Gospel. Open yourself to God's purpose for your
life. God is calling. Are you ready to listen?
In Christ, Paul+

"The place God calls
you to is the place where your deep gladness and the world's deep hunger meet." Frederick Buechner
This Sunday is Passion & Purpose Sunday! An intentional day for preaching, teaching, testimony, and theological
reflection about vocation: claiming and
expressing a passion and purpose for our lives as friends and followers of
Jesus Christ. We will join with churches across the Diocese of New Jersey
as we encourage each other to claim, or perhaps reclaim, our own vocation, our
own calling, our own passion and purpose.
8:00 a.m. - Holy Eucharist, Rite I (Traditional Language, no choir)
9:00 a.m. - Holy Eucharist (Rite II) (Contemporary Language with choir) The
9:00 a.m. service is perfect for families with children! Children may
begin the service upstairs in Children's Chapel (Room 201) and then
join their families for communion. If you prefer to worship together as
a family, children are always welcome in church.
10:15 a.m. - Christian Education for all ages! Immediately following the 9:00 a.m. service children have choices based on their age:
children through 6th grade report to their classrooms for Sunday School.
Rite 13 and J2A students (grades 6 - 9) gather in their own dedicated spaces on the lower level.
Senior High students (grades 10 - 12) meet in the Parlor.
For Adult Forum Hour, enjoy coffee, tea and choose from: - In Pierce Hall, the Trinity Task Forces begin their presentations. First up: Christian Education and Faith Formation, for Adults and Children.
- Discuss today's readings in the Library with the Rev. Gordon Graham.
- Join fellow parishioners for relaxing conversation in the George Thomas room.
11:15 a.m. - Holy Eucharist (Rite II) (Contemporary Language with choir)
The
11:15 a.m. service offers a slightly more classic liturgy, with Mass
settings sung by our gifted choirs. If you enjoy the rich traditions
of Anglican worship, this service is for you.
Sunday morning Childcare is available in the Nursery upstairs in Room 202 from 8:45am until the end of the 11:15 service.

See "King Corn" TOMORROW NIGHT Bring your GREEN teenagers!
|
Join Trinity Green for a screening and discussion of King
Corn, Friday April 24th at 7:00 p.m. in the George Thomas Room. $2
per person covers refreshments.
In King Corn, Ian Cheney and Curt Ellis, best friends
from college at Yale, move to the heartland to learn where their food comes
from. With the help of friendly neighbors, genetically modified seeds, and
powerful herbicides, they plant and grow a bumper crop of America's
most-productive, most-subsidized grain on one acre of Iowa soil. But when they
try to follow their pile of corn into the food system, what they find raises
troubling questions about how we eat-and how we farm. Appropriate for middle
school age kids and up.

Author Kelly McMasters to Read May 15th Trinity Church Reading Series
|
 Kelly
McMasters will read from her new book, Welcome to Shirley: A Memoir from an
Atomic Town on Friday, May 15th, 7:00 p.m. in the George Thomas
Room at Trinity.
McMasters' latest book demonstrates powerfully that-even with the evidence on their
side-justice is elusive, particularly when it involves a town that everyone,
including those who live there, regards as disposable. Kelly McMasters' essays and
articles have appeared in such places as The New York Times, The Washington
Post Magazine, Newsday, Elle Décor, and Time Out New York. She teaches writing at Columbia University
and mediabistro.com and is the co-director of the KGB Nonfiction Reading Series
in the East Village.
All are
welcome to the reading--admission is free and a reception will follow.
Thank you to Lauren B. Davis, Trinity Church's Writer-in-Residence, for arranging another wonderful evening. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Lauren at
609-430-0321. |
Join Gordon Graham in the Library Sunday to Discuss the Readings during Forum Hour
|
 If there
is a single idea that unites the readings for this Sunday it is 'astonishment'.
We often describe something that astonishes us as 'unbelievable', and yet, on
the other hand, say that some things fail to astonish just because they aren't
believable. This is how it is with the Resurrection for many modern people;
they aren't astonished by it, because they can't believe it physically
happened. The Gospel for today shows that in this respect, people today are not
so very different to the disciples. They too thought that the Jesus who seemed
to appear among them was more likely to be a ghost than a resurrected person -
hence the physical touching and eating that Jesus uses to convince them. As
contemporary readers, we can accept the written record of this testimony, or go
on saying that it too must be part of some strange delusion (or even pure
imagination) on the part of the disciples. When the question of physical
occurrence is settled, however, other 'astonishing' elements remain, and in
many ways these are much more important. First, could it really be true that a
crucified nobody turns out be the Messiah that the Children of Israel had long
yearned for? Could it really be that Jesus' resurrection promised immediate
forgiveness for the people who howled for his death and preferred to release a
proven murderer back into society? Can it be (as the Epistle tells us) that
they, and we despite our ordinariness, have a Christ-like future ahead of
us? There is a preconceived idea, widely held, that people in past times
were able to believe things that a modern, scientific culture like ours cannot.
Today's Gospel shows that Christians have good reason to combat this
assumption. Yet we mustn't lose sight of the fact that it is the religiously,
and not merely the scientifically, astonishing that it is essential for our
times to recover. |

First up: Christian Education and Faith Formation for Youth and Adults
This
Sunday during Forum Hour the Parish Task Force Committees that were formed last
fall begin their presentations on their work and findings. Each Sunday we will
hear two committees, each being given twenty-five minutes to appear. As our
rector Paul Jeanes stated in a message to the committees, "This is
to give an opportunity for the parish community to see your work and engage in
a process of conversation. This is not to re-open the debates, but rather
to present your work and findings." Thank you, thank you to all the parishioners who have
volunteered on these committees;your proposals and recommendations will be on the
agenda for the next Vestry retreat, where they will be prioritized and evaluated.
