  CCI Logo

The guidelines and application process for Colorado Creative Districts is  available on the CCI website. Applicants intending to apply for a Creative District designation must notify Maryo Gard Ewell at maryo@gard-sibley.org on or before January 15, 2012. Online applications are due January 30.

In 2011, the Colorado legislature passed HB11-1031. In brief, it encourages the formation of Creative Districts in communities, neighborhoods, or contiguous geographic areas, for the purposes of:
  • Attracting creative entrepreneurs and artists to a community, infusing new energy and innovation which in turn will enhance the economic and civic capital of the community
  • Creating hubs of economic activity, thereby enhancing the area as an appealing place to live, visit and conduct business, as well as create new economic activity
  • Attracting visitors
  • Revitalizing and beautifying communities
  • Providing a focal point for celebrating and strengthening a community's unique identity
  • Showcasing cultural and artistic organizations, events, and amenities
Colorado Creative Industries will certify two creative districts. The town or city will receive a grant and consulting assistance to further develop their districts, including signage and promotion. We will also select five communities that are developing plans to include arts and creative industries as an economic development strategy and are considering creative districts as an option. We will provide grants and planning assistance to them as well.

Colorado Creative Industries Grants Will Delay Deadlines by Three Months

CCI LogoColorado Creative Industries will delay its traditional spring grant deadline by three months, with applications due by June 21, 2012. Both the Colorado Creates grant for nonprofit organizations and units of government and the Success Through Art (StART) grants for schools will be incorporated into the new annual timeline. Guidelines and criteria for both programs will remain substantially the same as prior years.

There are a number of reasons CCI will readjust the grants deadline, including being responsive to concerns by potential applicants about the spring deadline conflicting with both the National Endowment for the Arts and Scientific and Cultural Facilities District deadlines. In addition, CCI is moving to a new department-wide online grant system, and is also attempting to streamline the award payment process by avoiding conflict with State fiscal year closing procedures.

CCI will consider applications with activities that take place from July 1, 2012 through September 30, 2013. Organizations that have summer projects in 2012 for which they plan to seek funding should contact CCI staff for guidance.

Art and Agriculture Exhibit on Display at National Western Stock Show through January 22

Custom made saddles, braided leather ranch gear and cowboy woodcarving are among the traditional art forms currently on display at the National Western Stock Show. They are part of the "Harvest of Heritage: Colorado Masterpieces Celebrating Agricultural Life and Art" exhibit that has been touring Colorado since September 2010. Hundreds of visitors have enjoyed the exhibit during the first few days of the Stock Show and there is still time to stop by.

The exhibit is housed in the Events Center near the Paddock area and visitors can enjoy the exhibit and also watch riders warming up their show horses for performances. The area is called "Pony Trails" and provides an educational experience for children and adults. Several thousand school children will tour "Pony Trails" as part of organized school tours. Harvest of Heritage can be visited any time the Events Center building is open  to the public.

Funding for Harvest of Heritage was awarded to Colorado Creative Industries from the National Endowment for the Arts American Masterpieces program. CCI contracted with the Museum of Western Colorado carry out the project. The exhibit was designed, built and is managed by the Museum of Western Colorado. If you would like further information on the exhibit please contact Ronna Lee Sharpe (970-361-1136).
