Governor Appoints New Council Members

On August 26, Governor Hickenlooper announced the appointment of five new members to the Colorado Council on Creative Industries (formerly the Colorado Council on the Arts.) In addition, Robert B. Clasen, current Council member and former CEO of Starz, replaced Chris Castilian as chair of the Council. Castilian was term-limited, having served for both Governor Owens and Governor Ritter. Governor Hickenlooper also reappointed Kim Harrell of Aurora to a second three-year term.

 

The new Council members are:

David Boger, Denver - co-founder and general manager of Jiberish Clothing

Claire Garcia - professor of English, Colorado College 

Robert Hammond - Commissioner of Education

Allison Sarmo - former director of the Grand Junction Arts Commission

Kyle Zeppelin - co-owner of Zeppelin Development of Denver

 

The mission of the Colorado Creative Industries, a division of the state Office of Economic Development and International Trade, is to promote, support and expand the creative industries to drive Colorado's economy, grow jobs and enhance our quality of life. The eleven-member Council meets quarterly to discuss policy issues and set overall priorities for the Council, including reviewing program direction and budgets, and approving advisory panel recommendations for awarding grants, incentives and contracts.

From furniture to housewares to fashion, Denver, and the whole of Colorado, boasts unique and creative enterprises that foster innovation, support our quality of life, and provide jobs for talented and highly skilled workers. Now through February 2012, the nearly 52 million visitors that pass through Denver International Airport (DIA) annually can see this work on display at the Design by Colorado exhibit.  

 

A variety of works will be on display in the categories of furniture design, interior design, game/technology design, fashion, industrial/product design, and graphic design. Pieces from talents such as Covelo Clothing, Ellen Bruss Design, Icelantic Skis and Where Wood Meets Steel, are just a few examples of the 28 artists and businesses on display at Design by Colorado. Office of Economic Development Resource Seminar Series 


State of Colorado SealThe Resource Seminar Series is a new initiative of the Office of Economic Development and International Trade, of which Colorado Creative Industries is a division. Sessions will be organized on a regular basis to provide useful information on a variety of topics that will enhance economic development efforts in communities around the state. In addition to the professional economic development community, other interested community leaders are invited.

The inaugural seminar will be:

9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. (lunch will be provided)
School of Hospitality Management, University of Denver  

This initial session will focus on the resources available from the economic development office. Presenters will be Al White, Director of the Colorado Tourism Office; Elaine Mariner, Director, Colorado Creative Industries; Alice Kotrlik, OEDIT Deputy Director and Director, Business Finance Division. "Colorado...it's AgriCultural" Photography Contest

Summer harvest is underway and it is a great time to snap a photo and enter the annual "Colorado...it's AgriCultural" photography contest. Prizes will be awarded in five subject areas: agritourism, crops, livestock, people and open professional. 

 

Judging will be based on theme, creativity and technical quality. The photographer whose picture best depicts the "spirit" of Colorado agriculture will receive a $150 gift card, and category winners will receive a "Colorado...it's AgriCultural" prize pack. Public Art Administrators Gather

Public Art Administrators from around the state are scheduled to meet in Grand Junction September 30 - October 1. A focus of the meeting will be the Grand Junction's Art on the Corner program, a year-round outdoor sculpture exhibit and one of the first of its kind in the country. Established in 1984, Art on the Corner has become a cultural icon in Downtown Grand Junction. The program has been recognized and mimicked in communities across the world.

 

The agenda will also include public art in private development, de-accessioning, placing your collection online, and community updates. Anyone involved or wanting to learn more about public art programs is welcome to attend. Introduction to Arts Integration  

 

think360artsIntroduction to Arts Integration is a new professional development opportunity presented by Think 360 Arts. This two-day class for K-12 educators is based on the highly successful Aesthetic Education Institute of Colorado. Held Friday, October 21 6-8:30 p.m. and Saturday, October 22 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. at the Denver Art Museum, the class will begin with a keynote address by Dr. Bruce Uhrmacher  on Friday evening to build a framework and common vocabulary for arts integration. On Saturday, workshops with professional teaching artists Lara Ruggles (music), Patti Smithsonian (theatre), and Susan Meyer (visual art) will demonstrate how an art form can connect to teaching practice and student learning.                   

 

There is a registration fee of $125, and graduate level credits are available for an additional cost.  All participants will receive 10 contact hours toward CDE license renewal. Click here for more information and to register.   

 

 

State Farm Good Neighbor Service-Learning Grants


state farmState Farm™ is proud to team up with YSA (Youth Service America) in a dynamic partnership to offer grants of up to $1,000 for the promotion of service-learning projects in K-12 public schools in all fifty US states. Each grant will engage participating youth in service-learning, an effective teaching and learning strategy that promotes student learning, academic achievement, workplace readiness, and stronger communities.               

 

Applications must be submitted by November 9th, 2011. YSA will host two application training webinars, September 27th and October 13th, for applicants to learn more about developing a successful project application. http://www.ysa.org/goodneighbor

Ski Shops Giving Colorado Mountain College's Pioneering Business Program a Big Lift

 

One year after Colorado Mountain College received four-year accreditation for its pioneering ski and snowboard business program, shops are stocking a line of skis and boots designed by the school's students.

 

A unique partnership between the college and Nordica USA led to the development and marketing of a side country-specific line of Austrian-made alpine skis and Italian-made boots built for both resort and backcountry skiing that is harvesting widespread accolades.
