NxLevel Creatives Class
Maryo Ewell, CCI consultant, and five other "creatives" graduated on March 30 from the NxLevel class offered by the Small Business Development Center. She says: "This was a strenuous 30-hour class that covered all aspects of designing and managing an entrepreneurial small business: mission development, planning, finance, marketing, insurance, getting loans, and much more. At the end, each of us had a business plan - not to mention a great new network of associates and a lot of written resource information - and was excited to get going."
Delaney Keating, owner of RoShamBo design and printing, blogged about this class from the perspective of a "creative" - what was it like? what were her insights? Read her posts.

Maryo Ewell, CCI consultant for community arts and grants, culminated a research project for Americans for the Arts with writing the first chapter in AftA's "Commemorating 50 Years," the history of AftA and its service to the arts in America. Says Ewell, "What's important to me about this book is that this history describes cycles of arts support which may offer ideas to us today as cycles begin again. I loved 'setting the stage' for this organizational story, describing amazing people and events in the first half of the 20th century. Imagine what happens when the Rockefeller brothers encounter the Settlement House movement!" The book is available for $8 for members and $10 for nonmembers from Americans for the Arts.

Currently, we are chasing testable competency in academic core skills. It is quite a different thing to try to educate future innovators. We don't test for that. What is a Creative District? HB1031
This bill gives authority to local governments to form Creative Districts, which will be authorized to accept economic development incentives and assistance from the Office of Economic Development and International Trade (OEDIT). A Creative District will be a geographically contiguous hub of cultural facilities, creative industries, or arts-related businesses, intended to promote local entrepreneurship, establish tourism assets, and strengthen a community's unique cultural identity. Redevelopment is a key element to their creation within the state. This bill creates a process of formation and approval. Local governments seeking Creative District certification will apply and report to the Creative Industries Division of the Office of Economic Development and International Trade (OEDIT). Detailed certification criteria are under development and an application process will be released by the Creative Industries Division during the first quarter of FY2011-12. During the development phase, the Division is actively seeking input from interested communities and can provide limited planning assistance. For more information, contact the Division director, Elaine Mariner, at elaine.mariner@state.co.us or 303-892-3802.
