Governor to Present Arts Award on Creative Industries Day

March 1 event celebrates role of arts and creative industries in Colorado

DENVER, CO (Feb 23, 2010) Creative Industries Day will be held on Tuesday, March 1, 2011, from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Colorado State Capitol and Denver Art Museum. The annual event will include Governor John Hickenlooper's announcement of the winner of the 2011 Governor's Arts Award, presented to a Colorado town that exemplifies effective use of the arts to enhance the quality of life and economic vitality of their community. The winning community was chosen by a panel convened by Colorado Creative Industries. The award consists of an original work of art created by a commissioned Colorado artist.

Organized by Arts for Colorado, Colorado Citizens for Culture, the Colorado Business Committee for the Arts, and Think360 Arts, Creative Industries Day highlights the important role arts, culture and the creative industries play in Colorado's economy, and provides an opportunity for advocates to meet with their state legislators.

Creative Industries Day will begin with a program from 8:00 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. in the Old Supreme Court Chambers at the State Capitol. The morning session will provide information about pending legislation, and will feature speakers on topics including creative learning, creative tourism, and creative enterprises.

From 10:30 a.m. - 12:00 noon, arts and creative industries advocates will meet with their legislators at the Capitol. Citizens can find their state representatives and senators here, and are encouraged to contact them in advance of their visit.

Lunch and the Governor's Arts Award presentation will take place at the Denver Art Museum, North Building, 100 West 14th Avenue Parkway from 12:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.  The award ceremony will highlight the fifteen nominated communities from around Colorado, and the winning community will be revealed and presented an award by the Governor.  The nominated communities are: Alamosa, Black Hawk, Breckenridge, Brighton, Crested Butte, Delta, Fort Collins, Fort Morgan, Lafayette, Lone Tree, Mancos, Montrose, Ouray, Parker, and Salida.

The event cost is $30 per person; $20 for students (includes breakfast and lunch) payable at the door. Check, credit card or cash accepted. A complete schedule for Creative Industries Day is available at www.artsforcolorado.org
