Advocate for the Arts Nationally
|
The National Endowment for the Arts provides over 40% of Colorado Creative Industries' budget, which in turn provides funding for programs such as the Colorado Creates and StART - Success Through Art grants. If the NEA's funding is cut, it would likely deeply impact our programs. You can advocate to support NEA and CCI.
Americans for the Arts makes it easy to stay on top of these issues. In the past week they have sent several email alerts including this one:
"The U.S. House of Representatives begins debate today (2/15) on House Resolution 1 (H.R.1), a bill to fund the federal government for the remainder of the current fiscal year. So far, two amendments have been filed that will eliminate or slash support for the National Endowment for the Arts. The bill already contains a $22.5 million cut in NEA funding, but these amendments are even more extreme." Americans for the Arts has an incredibly easy email system that allows you to directly contact your legislators with a personalized message. It only takes two minutes. Click here to take action

Colorado Legislative Update
| Representative Tom Massey introduced legislation to grow Colorado's film incentive fund by creating a ten-cent fee on all movie tickets sold in the state. It is estimated that this fee could raise several million dollars per year to encourage production in Colorado in the areas of feature films, television, commercial and video game development. The existing pool of approximately $1.5 million in incentives is nearly all committed to current productions, and there is no method in place to replenish the fund. If Rep. Massey's bill were to become law, Colorado would likely be the first state in the nation to fund its incentive program with a user fee. Another bill that will impact the Creative Industries has been introduced by Representative Joe Miklosi. HB11-1031 would allow for the designation of Creative Districts in Colorado. The bill responds to the current trend of "creative placemaking" as a strategy for economic development and sustainability. The criteria that will be established will help towns and cities identify and understand their community's unique creative assets and develop plans to promote and develop those assets as a strategy for increased economic and social value. Creative locales foster entrepreneurs and cultural industries that generate jobs and income, spin off new products and services, and attract and retain unrelated businesses and skilled workers. The bill passed the House and will be heard in the Senate next week.
