Soldiers Point Marina E-Newsletter July 2009
Greetings!

Darrell Barnett
Hello everyone and welcome to our first e-newsletter. As usual there's a lot happening at the Marina and we believe this is a good way to share all our news with you.

Our two Marina eateries, The Point Restaurant and The Deck Café/Waterfront Bar are both still very busy and have a few great promotions coming up. I wish Paul and Julie Simpson good luck in the upcoming 2009 Newcastle/Port Stephens Hunter Region Restaurant and Catering Awards for Excellence, I am sure they will be adding to their ever expanding trophy wall.

Hope to see you all soon, and happy boating!

Kind Regards

Darrell Barnett CMM

Soldiers Point Marina's Award for Excellence
Darrell with the Award and the ever smiling Marina Supervisor Jim Duncan
Soldiers Point Marina has been awarded a coveted Award for Excellence at this year's marina awards ceremony conducted by the Marina Industries Association of Australia.   This prestigious award is another gauge that Soldiers Point Marina continues to be one of the most highly regarded marinas in the country.  On receiving the award, Darrell Barnett paid tribute to his loyal and dedicated staff for their tireless efforts, particularly in regard to customer service.

Marina Staff attend International Marina Conference
Darrell Barnett, Jim Duncan and Clive Howes recently joined over 390 delegates and partners from around the world at the Marinas 2009 International Marina Conference on the Gold Coast.  The conference, run over three days, was opened by the Hon Joe Tripodi and attended by marina operators, consultants, suppliers, service providers and government agencies and centred on a theme of "Sustainability through Innovation".  A day's study tour of two local Gold Coast marinas was also included.  30 exhibitors displaying the latest innovations in marina products and services complemented the Conference.  "The Conference provided a valuable opportunity of networking with marina industry leaders and specialists with a wealth of experience in our industry" said Darrell Barnett.

Wedding on the Docks
Wedding on the Docks
"A" Arm at Soldiers Point Marina was the chosen site for the April wedding of Melbourne couple, Andrew and Kristy Smith.  Andrew and Kristy, who have been visiting the area for many years, chose the setting for its gorgeous location and the many happy memories of leisurely days spent at the marina.  Although rain threatened during the day, the late afternoon produced a stunning sunset providing the perfect romantic backdrop for the ceremony which was followed by a delectable dinner reception at The Point Restaurant.

SPMC Manager Awarded Internationally Certified Marine Service Manager status.
During the recent Marinas 2009 Conference on the Gold Coast, Clive Howes, Service Manager of the Soldiers Point Marine Centre, became the first of only two in Australia (and only eleven worldwide) to be awarded status as a Certified Marine Service Manager (CMSM).  The internationally-recognised career award formalises an individual's status as a professional service manager and signifies a commitment to providing consistent, high quality and thoughtful marine service.  "Certification as a Marine Service Manager is the only credential of its kind in our industry, and being one of the very first in this country to be accredited is a great honour", a proud Clive said.

Sail Port Stephens
Sail Port Stephens
In a tough economic climate, it's exciting to see a start up business grow 160%.

From a quiet little success of 25 boats at the inaugural event in 2008, Sail Port Stephens has experienced that 160% growth in the last 12 months, with 64 yachts competing across seven days from April 20 to 26.

Strategically positioned in the last week of NSW school holidays, Sail Port Stephens 2009 attracted yachts from as far north as Brisbane and as far south as Wollongong, with associated crew and visitors flying direct into Newcastle Airport from Melbourne, the Gold Coast, Brisbane,  Adelaide and Perth.

The regatta featured a cruisey start to the week with the Commodores Cup, 3 races over 3 days sailed in a similar spirit to twilight sailing, before the pace and size of the fleet stepped up at the back end of the week with the Yachting NSW IRC Championships, the Port Stephens Trophy and the Melges 24 Nationals.

Principal Race Officer Denis Thompson worked very closely with local members of the Corlette Point Sailing Association to plot out courses across the Port Stephens Marine Park, designed to take in the beauty and spectacular landscape of the Bay and surrounding islands just offshore.  The fun loving group also embraced the social program with gusto.

The dates for the 2010 Sail Port Stephens are April 12-18, with plans for it to be bigger and better, with the message from the organisers being a simple one .... Sail and Play with us in 1010 ... the best is yet to come!

Soldiers Point Marina is very much looking forward to involvement in next year's event.
