If you are a baby boomer and an RVer, I'll bet that when you were a kid, you spent alot of time outdoors. I sure did. My parents took me camping, fishing and golfing. My siblings and I spent every free hour outside, weather permitting.
Of course, our TV only had two channels, and there were no such things as home computers, ipods and video games.
Today's kids don't get out so much. There are lots of reasons for that, including the gadgets we just mentioned, living in more urban environments where there is less open space (and less security). Occasionally at The Springs, we see children who don't behave like we want them to. Is it just that they are spoiled? Or could it be that they have just spent too much time in front of a TV or a computer and not enough time fishing, swimming and golfing? Concerned about childhood obesity, inactivity and a decline in children experiencing the outdoors, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger recently issued a proclamation endorsing the California Children's Outdoor Bill of Rights. In his proclamation, the governor stated, "Spending time in the great outdoors is a wonderful experience for people of all ages, and this is especially true for our youth. Participating in outdoor activities is not only an enjoyable way for kids to get the exercise they need, it also helps them develop a greater appreciation for our magnificent environment."
"To promote increased involvement in outdoor activities, a coalition of government and the outdoor hospitality industry has created the Children's Outdoor Bill of Rights. This Bill of Rights provides that every child between the ages of four and fourteen should have the opportunity to:
1. Discover California's past
2. Splash in the water
3. Play in a safe place
4. Camp under the stars
5. Explore nature
6. Learn to swim
7. Play on a team
8. Follow a trail
9. Catch a fish
10. Celebrate their heritage
"I encourage parents, educators and other concerned citizens to do all they can to help our state's children experience and enjoy the wonders of Mother Nature - and there is no better place to experience them than right here in our beautiful Golden State."
We here at The Springs endorse the Children's Outdoor Bill of Rights, and we think there is no place better than Borrego Springs and the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park for young people to have great outdoor experiences.
As we work to create a great place that everyone will want to visit, we will also staff the resort to accomodate their needs, including better security, helping parents understand their responsibilities, and more things for families to do together.
