| Astronomy Park Opens with Lunar Eclipse Party |
On August 25th, a near-capacity crowd showed up at the Borrego Springs Chamber of Commerce's "Some Like It Hot" party at the Springs to learn about the total lunar eclipse of the 27th, and to check out the Springs' new Astronomy Park. After a delicious mexican dinner, renowned astronomer Dennis Mammana riveted the crowd with a great presentation on the subject of lunar eclipses, complete with amazing pictures and diagrams.
After the presentation, folks were shuttled out to the Astronomy Park, which consists of three 20 foot-diameter concrete pads located in one of the darkest parts of the 100 acre property. On this evening, our friend Mack Wesner set up both an 11-inch and a 15 inch telescope so we could all view the incredible near-full moon. Why build an Astronomy Park? We asked Mr. Mammana that very question.
"Southern California has more amateur astronomers than any similar area on our planet. The Orange County group alone is one of the world's largest, and just about every community from Palm Desert to Temecula to San Diego to Oceanside has their own club. All are interested in enjoying dark skies, and we in Borrego have some of the darkest skies anywhere", he explained.
Congratulations to Dennis, Mack and The Borrego Springs Chamber of Commerce for creating a wonderful experience at the Springs! |
| Overseed on Schedule |
Every year a massive effort is undertaken at most desert golf courses. The warm weather- loving bermuda grass is scalped down and water-starved to allow the overseed and germination of the winter turfgrass which is a variety of Rye. Without this process, the golf course would become totally brown when the cool nights arrive, as the bermuda goes dormant.
This year the Springs course will close in the last week of September so that it can re-open in time for Borrego Days Desert Festival, which is held the last weekend of October. During most of that time there will be some golf available, either at the RoadRunner, our excellent par 3, 18-hole course, or at the driving range. Call the Pro Shop at 760-767-0004 for exact dates, which will be known as we get closer. |

| Introducing Our New
General Manager |
 |
Meet Robert Cooper, the new face of the Springs at Borrego. The Springs is delighted to introduce Mr. Cooper,(pictured on the right in this Borrego Sun photo), as the new General Manager of the Springs at Borrego RV Resort and Golf Course. A serious RVer himself, Coop comes to us with a strong background in customer service, having been a long time senior manager at Procter and Gamble.
"Our goal is to provide our guests with superior customer service, and the best RV and golf experiences you can find anywhere" says Coop,"and that goal will be achieved."
All of us here at The Springs welcome Coop, and send a warm wish for a happy retirement to Joe Watt, the former manager (pictured on the left). In mid-August, Joe and his lovely bride Jeannie climbed in their RV and motored off into the sunset, with loads of our gratitude and friendship on board. |
