CARRIAGE HORSE ACCIDENT IN MIDTOWN
September 20th
There was another carriage accident in NYC on Thursday Sept. 20th about 4PM. A horse spooked on 11th Ave & 49th St. and hit a truck, slightly injuring himself. The carriage was damaged. The NYPD closed off the street to reporters and the public. A resident of the area reported this to us - no pictures unfortunately - but it happened. Horse drawn carriages must be banned in NYC.
HORSE ISSUES CONFERENCE IN LAS VEGAS
We attended a conference in Las Vegas sponsored by the Equine Welfare Alliance on September 22nd and 23rd. EWA is dedicated to ending the slaughter of American horses and the preservation and protection of our wild horses and burros on public lands. This was the prime focus of the conference.
However, I was asked to give a presentation about the carriage horse issue in NYC, which was well received.
On the Friday before the conference, we had the privilege of visiting a wild horse sanctuary outside Las Vegas. You may see other pictures at our Facebook page No Walk in the Park. This is one of the "wild ones" pictured here
TWO CARRIAGE HORSE ACCIDENTS IN MONTREAL
A horse bolted in Montreal - spooked by street noise. Click here.
On the same day, a horse carriage collided with a pizza delivery car. Click here. It is possible this is one accident, which means the horse spooked and bolted from loud street noise and crashed into a car.
MOMA PS 1 TO OFFER HORSE MEAT
please take action
Last week we learned that MOMA PS 1 in Long Island City, an adjunct of the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) in Manhattan is allowing their restaurant, a tenant, to offer horse meat on the menu. The uproar broke out when the press picked up on this story, first seen on Grub Street New York. Read what Tuesday's Horse has to say about it - and make sure you read the comments. E-mails and phone calls were sent to the museum and to MWells Diner, the restaurant. The latter shut down their phones and refused to answer e-mails. The Museum claimed that it was not their responsibility and referred to the Canadian restaurant as "In New York, M. Wells has been celebrated for its creative adaptations of Canadian cuisine and its adventurous menu. "
Americans do not eat horse meat - just as we do not eat dogs and cats. It is taboo. They are our companion animals - they are our friends. It is just the way it has always been. That is not the case in certain other countries including the French part of Canada, Italy, Belgium, France and Japan. The last horse slaughter house (for human consumption) shut down several years ago. The horse meat was shipped to Europe. Since that time, horses have been trucked to Canada and Mexico to be slaughtered - a cruel and unspeakably inhumane process. Within the last year, it has once again become possible to slaughter horses in the US for human consumption because a bill was passed making funding available for inspectors. Many states are clamoring to set up new horse slaughter plants in the US. We hope we can outlaw horse slaughter before this happens. Another strong argument to make to MOMA is that American horses are not raised for food and therefore receive a lot of drugs, many of which are carcinogens. For more information on this issue , please read How Safe is that Horse Meat by Vickery Eckoff.
PLEASE TAKE ACTION: send an e-mail to the following MOMA e-mails asking them to demand that MWells Diner not serve horse meat in their diner or NYC.
- Glenn D. Lowry is the Director of MOMA in Manhattan. Please contact him at Glowry@moma.org
- cc: mail_ps1@moma.org, visitor_services_ps1@moma.org, membership@moma.org
- For a direct e-mail to the source, you can write to The MWells Diner - write@mwellsdiner.com . They have not responded to e-mails and turned off their phone
There are false rumors circulating that the restaurant is "holding off" on putting horse meat on the menu. For a restaurant that also has on its menu veal brains, foie gras and frog legs, I suspect they are waiting until the uproar dies down. These are the same people who served horse baloney at a Brooklyn food fair last summer.
We want a statement from the restaurant and/or MOMA that states clearly that MWells will not serve horse meat in the restaurant or in New York City.
OCTOBER 23RD HOLD THE DATE
Vigil for Charlie who died in 2011
Almost one year ago on October 23, 2011, we learned that a horse name Charlie collapsed and died on W. 54th St. on his way to work. Please join with us as we stand together in solidarity to once again ask the Mayor and City Council to put an end to this inhumane and unsafe business. Our event will be in the evening. Details will follow.
PLEASE REMEMBER
Ban the business first! Gambling on the cars will hurt the horses.
A ban of the horse-drawn carriage trade in NYC must NOT be dependent on the success of a private industry - i.e. electric cars. This is why we do not support Intro 86A but do support the Avella/Rosenthal bill in Albany. Sign our petition if you have not already by clicking here. Read my blog to understand why we say this.
