HORSE CARRIAGES vs PEDICABS
Insurance requirement inequities
Did you know that the City requires only $10,000 property damage insurance for the carriage trade - but $50,000 for the pedicab industry? For pedicabs, it is $100,000 for personal injury or death of any one person resulting from any one accident. And for the entitled and dangerous carriage horse trade it is $25,000 for bodily injury of any one person resulting from any one accident or $50,000 for death of any one person resulting from any one accident.

See for yourself. These are the pedicab insurance requirements. And these are horse-drawn carriage insurance requirements. Even with insurance, there continues to be inequities.

NEW ARTICLE ON OPPOSING VIEWS
Times Sq 1 Thanks to Opposing Views for this piece by Phyllis Daugherty - Ban NYC Horse-Drawn Carriages: "New Bill Needs Your Support," says Elizabeth Forel. Click Here to read it. Comment if you like to support a ban. The same carriage trade trolls are out in force, which is always expected.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Queens Chronicle - Ban the Carriages
August 30, 2012 - Ban the Carriages - Dear Editor: I agree with Sen. Avella that now is the time to pass S.5013 and Assembly Member Rosenthal's companion bill, A.7748, to ban horse-drawn carriages in New York City, which also ensures the horses are safely retired ("No horsing around; Avella wants action," Aug. 23). I hope it doesn't take a human fatality to finally put an end to this antiquated industry, already banned in many large, traffic-congested cities.

An important side note: City Council Speaker Christine Quinn is a strong supporter of the industry, refuses to put the Paid Sick Leave bill up for a vote and let St. Vincent's Hospital close (the property was taken over by a real estate developer who "happens to be" a big donor to Quinn's campaign). And, so far, three former council members have been convicted of felonies related to the "slush fund" scandal - all on her watch. For the 99 percent, anyone but Quinn for mayor in 2013. Mickey Kramer Manhattan

*** STOP THE INSANITY *** A MUST READ!!
A ban must not be dependent on the success of "electric cars."
Times Sq.3 Please read my new blog called STOP THE INSANITY - Did you know that if you support the City bill, Intro 86A, the ban of the carriage horse trade is dependent on the success of the "electric cars, " which may never happen and if they do, their fate will be left up to tourists? Do you want some tourist from Podunk deciding the fate of the carriage horses -- and your safety? Read how the electric cars - Intro 86A - will be detrimental to the horses even if we get a humane mayor. These cars have nothing to do with a ban and will hurt the horses in the long run.

A ban of the inhumane and unsafe carriage horse trade must not be dependent on the success of some costly vanity industry. Activists: you owe it to yourself to read and understand the implications of this bill - Intro 86A - and how it will hurt the horses. Click here and scroll down to Subchapter 33 - Show Cars. The only bill to support is the Avella/Rosenthal bill that is in the State legislature. Stay tuned for another Lobby Day.

For those wondering about our credentials, the Coalition to Ban Horse-Drawn Carriages started the campaign to ban horse-drawn carriages in 2006. I, personally, have been involved with this issue since the early 1990s. The campaign was not started by PeTA, nor HSUS, nor NY Class, and it certainly was not the ASPCA - an organization that, over the years, had many opportunities to do the right thing but did not. When those organizations were asked to promote our Lobby Day in Albany in May for the Avella/Rosenthal bill, they either refused to or screwed it up by intentionally not announcing the League of Humane Voters' bus. Really a disgrace. We have no conflicts of interest. We are all-volunteer. Our only goal here is to see the carriage trade shut down and the horses retired to safety. Activists have been fooled by the glamour and glitz of the electric car campaign - with the endless petitioning and fund raising -- for what? Please do the right thing for the horses and support the Avella/Rosenthal bill - and make sure Christine Quinn is not elected mayor.
