HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Let's make it happen for the horses
2012 We wish all of you a very Happy New Year and hope that 2012 is a good one for you and your families - both two legged and four legged -- and that 2012 brings some breakthroughs and success for the horses and this issue. 2011 was an eventful year for this issue and we thank all of you from the bottom of our hearts for your support. We could not do it without you. Thanks to all who bought a Charlie Horse tag, holding him in memory

Instead of "wishing" that things improve -- let's get out there and make it happen.

WAR HORSE - WHAT'S NEXT FOR ALL OF US
the carriage horses - NYC's own war horses
bobby by jeffrey anderson WAR HORSE is playing in theaters all over the US. In NYC, the play is also at Lincoln Center. It is a powerful anti war and strong animal-human bond story. It shows the truth about our vile history with horses - how, despite their sensitive nature as prey animals, they were conscripted into service in the war because they had no choice as slaves. Over 300,000 were killed during WW1. And carriage drivers still think it is OK to exploit these gentle beings. This photo is of Bobby II Freedom by Jeffrey Anderson - NYC's own war horse. Bobby mane is actually darker and he looks very much like Joey in the film.

Some interesting articles about the movie.

We are planning to flyer at either the Spielberg movie War Horse or the play at Lincoln Center. Please e-mail me at coalition@banhdc.org if you are interested in volunteering with us - or on your own in your own community.

VOLUNTEER
Please help us with a variety of tasks
We need help - mostly research tasks on the computer. You should be proficient in Word and Excel. Please contact me at coalition@banhdc.org if you are interested. Please note that you must know me or someone who knows me. The reason we do this is very clear. We do not want to run the risk of being infiltrated as in what happened with NY Class - per below article in the Post.

SUPPORT NY STATE BILL TO BAN HORSE-DRAWN CARRIAGES
Please sign petition and call your representative
horse eating from ground This petition has gone viral!!! We currently have over 113,000 signatures in support of the state bill. So PLEASE sign it if you have not done so already and pass it on to friends and colleagues.Click Here to Sign Petition.

The bill to ban horse-drawn carriages in NYC is S5013 in the NYS Senate and A7748 in the NYS Assembly. It is referred to as the bill that PROHIBITS THE OPERATION OF HORSE DRAWN CABS IN THE CITY OF NEW YORK.

  • IN ADDITION TO SIGNING THE PETITION - PLEASE CALL YOUR REPRESENTATIVES.
  • Senate - Click here for the Senate site; find your Senator and call the district/local office.
  • Assembly - Click here for the Assembly site; find your Assemblymember and call the district office
  • Everyone has one Senator and one Assemblymember representing them.
For all those who live outside NYS, please call these offices and show your support as tourists:
  • Senator Tony Avella - 1-718-357-3094
  • Assemblymember Linda Rosenthal - 1-212-873-6368
  • Let them know that you are a potential tourist to NYC and that you support their bill to ban horse-drawn carriages.
(Some of the drivers continue to throw food on the ground for their horses. They seem not to care about the germs, filth and pieces of glass and debris that can be ingested. This is just one more piece of evidence that they not only do not care about their horses but they do not know anything about proper care.)

NY POST IS CALLING IT CARRIAGE GATE
but then, consider the source
traffic It seems that NY Class co-president, Steve Nislick made some embarrassing comments about political donations at an event last summer that were taped by a carriage trade spy - and then given to the NY Post. Called: Secret Tape: How to Spin Council - Candid carriage foe, dated January 1, 2012, it is yet another pro carriage horse piece by once serious journalist, David Seifman of the NY Post.

I do not know what the fuss is with both Quinn and Lappin saying they will return his donations. But I guess they have to play the blushing bride game of shock and awe. What did they think they were getting donations for - their good looks? Someone likened this farce to the scene from Casablanca when the cop says "I'm shocked, shocked to find out that gambling is going on in here" He then accepted his winnings.

Whether there is more to the story than meets the eye, it is not illegal to give campaign contributions up to a certain amount. However, the whole concept of campaign donations to City Council members who have no power to move a bill forward is puzzling to me. The only person with power in the Council is Speaker Quinn. It does not matter how many Council Members sign onto Intro 86, the electric car alternative bill - all 50 can do so. But all the power is with that 51st member - the Council Speaker - and she can persuade all of those members to vote against the bill, it is ever came up for a vote. The reason she can do so has everything to do with controlling the money and power - stipends and committee chairmanships. This is an interesting article by Citizens Union - Council Lulu Watch. (picture of carriage horse in traffic on Central Park South -- do people really think this is actually romantic?)

A HORRIFYING INCIDENT
described on Facebook
Accidents involving horse-drawn carriages happen a lot more often than gets reported in the press. Six of the last seven incidents were reported to the media by us after we learned about them from random eye witnesses. The ASPCA refuses to release this list of accidents.

This is from a member of our FB page No Walk in the Park - Lisa Patnaude. I visited NYC many years ago and was shocked to see a carriage horse get side swiped by a cab. I will never forget the sound of metal striking flesh and bone. This horse was in the middle of rush hour traffic. He reared up in fear but the horse driver just pushed him on, never getting out to see if he was ok. No one stopped to even give it a second look which made me think this must be a common occurrence. I was glued to my spot in shock and felt such anger and sadness for the treatment of that horse. It all comes down to one simple thing - common sense.

Carriage horses were once a necessity until modern vehicles came into existence. Now they are no longer 'needed' but 'wanted' purely for the pleasure of humans. Horses and city vehicles have no right occupying the same space. It's that simple. And to not allow a horse access to pastures to run free or the simple pleasure of rolling in the grass during "off hours" is simply wrong. I'm not a horse expert, but one does not need to be an expert to recognize that all living things have a right to basic necessities, and I mean more than a roof over the head and food.

We'll keep you up to date about accidents, events, demonstrations, actions we'd like you to take, and other ways to help. The messages are short - only 140-characters maximum.

REPORT HORSE INCIDENTS - IF YOU SEE SOMETHING - SAY SOMETHING
Be our eyes and ears
aspca car If you see a carriage horse incident, please notify coalition@banhdc.org.
  • Take pictures (crucial) - videos or stills
  • Record exact location of accident - ex. - north/west corner of 60th St. and Broadway
  • Get 4-digit license plate number from back of carriage
  • Provide a narrative - description of what happened
  • Note: don't worry if you are not sure if what you saw was illegal. We will figure it out. The most important thing is to get the information to us.

You will help to make a difference for these horses. The media learned of six of the last seven accidents from us - the Coalition to Ban Horse-Drawn Carriages. And we learned about it from you!! It makes sense that the DoH and ASPCA know about more -- we have requested this information from both the ASPCA and the DoH and we are still waiting. The public has a right to know just how unsafe and inhumane this industry is. (picture is of ASPCA car parked off 6th Avenue in the park on 12/24. The driver never got out of his warm car. There was no way he was able to monitor the carriage drivers. Outrageous.)

WATER TROUGH REMAINS EMPTY
it has ASPCA inscription
empty water trough The water trough off Fifth Avenue continues to go empty. This picture is date stamped for 12/31/11. Central Park has two water troughs -- the other is off Sixth Avenue and is working. The Fifth Avenue one has been turned off for the season. What is so ironic is that it is inscribed to the ASPCA.

A couple of years ago, both the ASPCA and Edison Properties (NY Class) donated water to fill up the empty troughs. Why have they discontinued this? It is shameful. Horses need water even more in the winter months. I have reached out to both organizations and have been ignored. One trough is not enough. We will continue to see how we can get water in the trough.

ALSO - Please call 311 and complain. Do not let them tell you to call the ASPCA. This is the trough closer to Fifth Avenue.
