CARRIAGE HORSE DEMO TOMORROW
Sunday July 24th - please come out for the horses
Please come to a demo for the NYC carriage horses:
- When: Sunday, July 24th at 1PM until 3PM
- Where: Meet at the north/west corner of Fifth Avenue and Central Park South (usual location)
- Sponsored By - Heart for Animals and the Coalition to Ban Horse-Drawn Carriages
We will be protesting the incident that occurred mid day Saturday, July 16th when an unattended carriage horse spooked after the carriage in front of him moved too close. Terrified, he bolted into traffic and galloped from 5th to 7th Avenue on Central Park South and hit a parked car. There was a small report in the Daily News. We do not know if the horse was injured. This is a very serious public safety issue. At 1200-2000 pounds, spooked horses become unwitting weapons and are a danger to themselves and passersby.
We will also be protesting the horses working in the very hot weather and the existing laws that cover this. Carriage horse driving is suspended when the temperature reaches 90 degrees according to a special thermometer used by the ASPCA Humane Law Enforcement Officer. There is no consideration for humidity. There is also no provision in the law to lift the suspension and the drivers come back at will.
TAKE ACTION Please call your council member. This is the council web site -- http://council.nyc.gov/html/members/members.shtml -- For those who live outside NYC, please call Speaker Christine Quinn at (212) 564-7757 or (212) 788-7210 Tell them that the carriage horse industry must be shut down. It is unsafe and inhumane and it is only a matter of time before a person is killed. It has happened elsewhere.
NYC CARRIAGE HORSES DON'T GET WHAT THEY NEED
On One Green Planet
If you missed my article from July 10th on One Green Planet - called NYC Carriage Horses Don't Get What they Really Need - please click here. Read the comments and please add your own. The carriage drivers are out in force.
One of their favorite retorts is to dismiss us by saying that we do not know anything about horses and they do. They are "equestrians." Well I say this to them: As for your saying that you all know about horses and we don't: Get this: Michael Vick knows dogs. So what's your point!

SUPPORT THE BILL TO BAN HORSE-DRAWN CARRIAGES IN NYC
It is up to us to move this forward! - Please sign petition
The NYS State Legislature is on summer break now, but you can still contact your representatives about this bill. NYS Senator Tony Avella and Assemblymember Linda Rosenthal have introduced a bill in the state Senate to ban the horse-drawn carriage industry in NYC. Please read this article by Stephanie Feldstein at Change.org and then sign the petition, which is linked and will generate letters to state legislators.
Anyone can sign the petition. You do not have to live in New York State. People from other states and countries are encouraged to sign.
HAS YOUR LEGISLATOR RESPONDED TO YOU? If so, please send me a copy of the correspondence - to coalition@banhdc.org.
Please sign the petition if you have not already -- forward to friends. Let's try to make it 2,000 signatures by Monday.
AMERICAN GIRL PLACE KID'S STORE - OK WITH HORSE CRUELTY
Take Action - Call, Sign Petition and Demonstrate
We recently leaned that American Girl Place, a very popular girls' store on Fifth Avenue in NYC, made a deal with the carriage trade (for $75 a head) to offer little girls horse carriage rides and a meal. The event this past Thursday was done on one of the hottest days of the year, barely missing 90 degrees before they took off. The City of NY provided them with a special permit. This gives a terrible message to young girls - that horses are meant for their pleasure and to exploit.
There are several things you can do to take action:
- Call marketing manager,Judy Herbst at 212.401.6569 and ask that they cancel the remaining carriage horse rides
- Sign the petition on Change.org sponsored by Friends of Animals -- click here.
- Come to a protest at American Girl Place at the next scheduled carriage ride event -- next Thursday morning, July 28th - again sponsored by FoA - at 9:15 am to 10:30 am -- 609 Fifth Avenue at 49th St. -

CHARLESTON & SAVANNAH - HELL ON EARTH FOR HORSES
two actions - comment on article and sign petition
In Charleston, the temperature at which the horses are taken off the street is 98 degrees. Yes you read that correctly. And there is no consideration for humidity. The law was probably written by the local industry since so many days get well above 90, this would limit the days they are shut down and lose money. Horse heat plan gets icy reception - Move to put thermometer in City Market angers tour operators -

Savannah -- just as hot as Charleston - does not have any regulations governing heat and humidity. Please sign this petition. Click here.
