NEW DATE FOR CARRIAGE HORSE DEMO
Sunday July 24th
Apologies. We had to change the date of the demo this coming weekend to accommodate Senator Tony Avella. His schedule was already filled for Saturday - but he is available for this event on Sunday.
Please come out to a demo for the NYC carriage horses:
- When: Sunday, July 24th at 1PM until 3PM
- Where: Meet at the north/west corner of Fifth Avenue and Central Park South (usual location)
- Sponsored By - Heart for Animals and the Coalition to Ban Horse-Drawn Carriages
Hot summers are especially difficult for the carriage horses. They do not do well in heat - particularly when combined with high humidity. Carriage horse driving is suspended when the temperature reaches 90 degrees according to a special thermometer used by the ASPCA Humane Law Enforcement Officer. There is no consideration for humidity. There is also no provision in the law to determine when suspensions are lifted so the drivers often follow the lowest temperature they can find on radio and come back out to work their horses.
We will also be protesting the incident that occurred mid day Saturday when an unattended carriage horse spooked after the carriage in front of him moved too close. He bolted into traffic and galloped from 5th to 7th Avenue on Central Park South and hit a parked Nissan. There was a small report in the Daily News. We do not know if the horse was injured.
This is yet another reason why this industry needs to be banned. Horses are sensitive prey animals. They spook at the slightest provocation as this one did. They are unpredictable. At 1500 to 2,000 pounds or more, they become unwitting weapons when they charge. TAKE ACTION Please call your council member. This is the council web site --

For those who live outside NYC, please call Speaker Christine Quinn at (212) 564-7757 or (212) 788-7210
Tell them that the carriage horse industry must be shut down. It is unsafe and inhumane and it is only a matter of time before a person is killed. It has happened elsewhere.
