CAN YOU VOLUNTEER WITH US?
A casting call for volunteers - just a few hours a week
We need your help. Only a few hours a week. The campaign to ban horse-drawn carriages in NYC has been hard fought and continues. It is an impossible task because of the politics involved with present local leadership. We started this campaign in 2006 and put the issue on the map. Before that, there had been no action for the horses for many years and it was always for better regulations, which we know does not work. But we do not give up. Now we need volunteers and we hope you will help us. Please sign up to volunteer with us on weekends. We table on Fifth Avenue near the hack line educating people about the inhumane carriage horse trade and about the new STATE bill introduced by Senator Avella and Assemblymember Rosenthal. We generally do this on Saturday for a few hours, weather permitting. We need people who are committed to the issue and who are dependable.
Please e-mail Paola at volunteerforthecoalition@gmail.com if you are interested in helping our campaign to ban horse-drawn carriages from NYC.
NEED VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR: This is a job for someone who wants more responsibility. We are looking for someone to act as co-volunteer coordinator with Paola. That person needs to be dependable, organized, available on weekends and have access to a computer. Please e-mail coalition@banhdc.org if you are interested.

NYC CARRIAGE HORSES DON'T GET WHAT THEY NEED
by Elizabeth Forel - published at One Green Planet
NYC Carriage Horses Don't Get What they Need - 7/10/11. This was written in response to an article published by the NY Post and then picked up by several non thinking and non questioning blogs. Please read, take action - i.e. sign the Change.org petition - and please forward to friends.
an excerpt from the article, which references the industry legislation passed into law last year. : One of the problems with this window-dressing legislation was that it did not provide the necessary daily turnout to pasture, which requires 1 to 1 acres per horse and cannot be accommodated by NYC stables. As social herd animals and not machines, horses need to interact with their own species, to graze, run, buck, roll and play, to scratch themselves, stretch and engage in mutual grooming, which is a great stress reducer.
They have none of this for 47 weeks of the year. Humane? I think not.
Snow job on the public? Absolutely.
MERCADO DE SAN BERNABE IN MEXICO
hell on earth for horses and other animals
Activists in Mexico and the United States are trying to get this place shut down. Please sign this petition on Change.org.
This is an excerpt from the article: SAN BERNABE IS THE LARGEST ILLEGAL UNREGULATED LIVESTOCK MARKET IN MEXICO. It makes a mockery of humanity and is one of the most shameful examples of animal brutality and ill health in Mexico. The San Bernabe market has existed for over 60 years. MALTA - CARRIAGE HORSE DIES FROM SUNSTROKE
Malta Today - 7/7/11 - Horse dies from sunstroke, animal rights activist calls for midday curfew
Animal rights activist Moira Delia says government has to enforce ban on horse-drawn carriages during the 11am-4pm time-slot in the summer.
The death of a horse that collapsed in the road on Wednesday while pulling one of the traditional karrozzini has prompted animal rights activists to lodge a complaint with Transport Minister Austin Gatt.
Delia said animal rights activists are feeling helpless and want an effective ban on animals being made to work in the afternoon sun during summertime, and to compensate karrozzini owners financially until adequate shelters are provided for their horses.
"Year after year, we work so hard to protect the animals, yet the issue of adequate shelters from the sun remains out of our control," Delia said.
Delia added that while government has plans to build the shelters, these are nowhere yet to be seen. "Does this mean the horses will have to go through another summer without shelters? Summer is already here."
She insisted on the need to build shelters not only in Valeltta, but wherever there are kazzozzini in operation, such as Rabat. "Shelters need to provide water and shade," she insisted.
She also said karrozzin drivers were also responsible for the animals' plight. "They don't care, as long as they get income. If you really care for your animals, you wouldn't let them suffer in this way. It is very irresponsible for them to keep operating in this way," she said.
Delia said government should ban the use of horses working in the midday sun. Asked about cabbie drivers' loss of income in such a ban, Delia said that losses should be compensated for by the government. "Government has been helping out in other problems, so why not help in this regard?"
She also called for cabbie drivers to be fined if they don't use the shelters or respect the 11am-4pm curfew.
Contacted by MaltaToday, a woman who witnessed the collapsed horse on Wednesday said the incident took place close to the Bank of Valletta branch along the Msida waterfront at approximately 1pm. "Both the horse and the karrozzin were on their sides, and the horse was bleeding from its nose," the witness said.
"I didn't see any cars nearby or damaged. The first time I drove past there were only the horse owner and his family. They looked distraught. It looked like it collapsed from the heat. It is not the first time it's happened."
Note: there was no picture available of the dead horse in Malta so I took the liberty of including the famous picture of Whitey - a NYC carriage horse who collapsed from the heat some years ago. This is what it would have looked like.
