MEET BOBBY II
middle name is Freedom
Thanks to all of you who suggested middle names for Bobby. They were all great and I appreciated it so much. It was hard to make the choice but I asked Bobby and he seemed to like Freedom best. The name represents what all of the carriage horses should have and is also the name of the mustang who escaped the BLM round up. Click here for that story. Several of us went to see Bobby this past Sunday at Equine Advocates sanctuary. Bobby is one lucky boy. He will be in a large paddock with two other older gentlemen, with lots of land to run, graze and socialize with the other horses.
Bobby is very sweet and friendly and is progressing every day into a happy, spirited horse. His scarred face shows the abuse behind the carriage trade and the abusive people who had him before - possibly the Amish. His bridle and other equipment were worn too tightly, wearing his hair off to bare skin, long scarred. But he is still beautiful.
To learn more about Bobby , click on the Equine Advocates' blog. Notice the worried look when he first arrived compared to a few days later. By the time we got to see him, he already knew that carrots and hugs were coming. Susan tells us that when Bobby first arrived he would stand in place as if he had a carriage attached to his back. That behavior is quickly being left in the dust as he acclimates to his new surroundings. See the video of Bobby II Freedom arriving at Equine Advocates' Sanctuary. Click here. PASSAGES: HORSE HEAVEN, ESCAPING THE PLATE
by Elizabeth Hess: Rural Intelligence
Passages: Horse Heaven, Escaping the Plate - by Elizabeth Hess - Rural Intelligence - 7/9/10 - Last week, the staff at Equine Advocates, a manicured, 140 acre horse sanctuary, gathered at the main barn to welcome a new arrival. "Getting this horse is a real coup," Susan Wagner, president of Equine Advocates, told me as we waited in the hot sun for the horse. "48 hours later and he would have been chopped meat."
Americans don't eat horses. However, we send them to slaughter and export the results for consumption without moral hesitation. Advocates like Wagner publicize this miserable reality for horses and save as many of them as possible. Most of the 80 residents at her sanctuary, once slaughter bound, detoured to safety. This week, a group of rescuers worked together to buy one particular horse from what Wagner calls "a kill pen" at the New Holland Sales Stable, in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. New Holland is synonymous with slaughter. Bobby (AKA Billy # 2783) is an 18 year old, lame, worm-ridden, New York City carriage horse with bad teeth and a nasal drip. "Wait until you see him," Wagner says. "He's adorable."
Wagner loves all horses, but carriage horses, from her perspective, are working class heroes. For years, she has supported legislation to ban New York's controversial carriage trade, where a few hundred horses pound the pavement, pull heavy loads, and are monitored by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. "It's not only the traffic accidents," explains Wagner. "It's the horrible conditions in the stables and the physical wear and tear on the horses. They never get to run, walk on grass, or socialize with other horses." But getting custody of a carriage horse, even an unwanted one, is virtually impossible. According to Elizabeth Forel, the founder and president of the Coalition to Ban Horse-Drawn Carriages, New York City drivers sell off about 70 horses each year, one third of the stock. "But it's difficult to learn where they go," explains Forel. Their owners are not about to give their horses to the enemy-those who would like to shut the industry down.
When the van pulls into Equine Advocates, the staff breaks into applause. Minutes later, Wagner leads a bay gelding down a ramp, and he walks gingerly into the warm light of a spectacular Columbia County morning. Bobby moves slowly, doing what he is told, which is probably what he's been doing for most of his life. As soon as he stops for the crowd to approach, Bobby lifts his crusty nostrils into the air to catch the wafting scent of hay, grass, other horses. Paradise. ....CONTINUED - CLICK HERE.
BLOG ABOUT HEAT WAVE AND LAW
and the ASPCA
I consider the ASPCA to be the animal organization of record in NYC. What does that mean exactly? Several things. It does not mean that I respect them because I do not. But it does mean that I recognize that they are more conservative and main stream than other groups and probably appeal to more people. They are one of the oldest humane organizations, having been founded in the 1800s by Henry Bergh. They have a board made up of the leaders of industry. They have the responsibility to do humane law enforcement. ... this is something they will not only not give up, but they refuse to share this with anyone (like the animal control agency) but when criticized will use the excuse to complain that they are only volunteer so take your complaints elsewhere. They have little will to do the right thing and are largely ineffective with the carriage horse issue. For as long as I have been involved with animal issues in NYC -since the 1980s, New Yorkers who know the score have been very frustrated with them.
NYC is in the middle of a very serious heat wave. Last Tuesday and Wednesday reached over 100 degrees. Read my blog: THE LAW, THE CARRIAGE HORSES AND THE ASPCA - and why we need change. The ASPCA should have totally suspended the trade on both Tuesday and Wednesday. Philadelphia did and Annapolis did for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.
IT WAS 93-94 DEGREES ON SUNDAY
the horses were out -- where was the ASPCA?
Members of Win Animal Rights were demonstrating on Sunday at the hack line. They reported that it was over 90 degrees -- about 93-94 (90 is the cut off to send the drivers in); the horses were out and there were no ASPCA officers on site to monitor the horses. When they called the Humane Law Enforcement number, the voice mail box was full. They could not leave a message. They were there for several hours and the officers never came to the site.
On Monday, I sent an e-mail to the Sr. VP in charge of Humane Law Enforcement and their equine veterinarian asking why this was allowed to happen. Of course, I was ignored. This is a disgrace. The ASPCA probably got a lot of you to sign petitions to allow them to keep their inspection "powers." There are still petitions being circulated on line even though the issue is moot. They are afraid to take action and misinterpret the law in favor of the industry. It could not get worse. They are accountable to no one. Please send an e-mail to the following to complain. You will probably get a boilerplate spin response, but they should not be allowed to get away with this..
- Ed Sayres - President - esayres@aspca.org, ed_sayres@aspca.org
- Stacey wolf - Sr. Pres of Humane Law Enforcement - stacyw@aspca.org
- Pam Corey - equine veterinarian - pamelac@aspca.org
- Joe Pentangelo - Humane Law Enforcement - josephp@aspca.org
Please note that these e-mail addresses may not work. Some of them have been changed over time because of the deluge of complaints the ASPCA has received on other issues as well.
93 HORSES REMOVE FROM DoH HORSE REGISTRY
Where did they go?
Comparing the carriage horse numbers from 2008 to 2009 reveals that 94 horses who had been in the system in 2008 were no longer on the 2009 Department of Health horse registry. What happened to them? As has been shown clearly with Bobby II, the existing law does not protect these horses from the auctions, which often lead to slaughter. If sold outside of NYC, records are not required to be submitted to the Department of Health. 94 horses is a huge and troublesome number. I doubt that a fraction of them got good homes. The industry likes to say that they work with the Humane Society of NY who helps get their horses adopted. Don't believe it. This organization does not actually do many adoptions and refused to answer several requests from me for information to clarify what the industry said about them on NY1. But they ignored me just like the ASPCA does. Last year, they only managed four adoptions - yet they will not take a stand against this industry. By pretending they are doing adoptions, they succeed in getting donations and enabling the industry to continue uncontrolled. 94 horses is outrageous. How many went on to slaughter?
As of September 2009, there were 237 horses according to records from the Department of Health. Oddly enough some of the horses seem to disappear for a few years then reappear - or at least their 4-digit number does. Are these numbers being reused? Anything is possible because there is no oversight.
HELP ABUSED CARRIAGE HORSES ON GILI ISLANDS
please sign petition and forward - not much time left
Gili Islands in Indonesia is a paradise for people but hell on earth for its carriage horses. Please click here to sign the petition Gili Islands - Tropical Paradise or Hell on Earth for Carriage horses? (answer - it is hell on earth) This petition is created by tourists who have made the pledge not to visit these islands near Bali until the business leaders and the Minister of Tourism take this issue seriously, retire the horses to a sanctuary and replace them with PEDICABS.
We are working with Jakarta Animal Aid Network on this issue. Although JAAN would like to see the horses treated better, they love the idea of replacing them with pedicabs. They will be meeting with business and government leaders in mid July to discuss this. Please let's all try to grow the petition by that time.
These signatures will be used to pressure business leaders to take positive action. Because tourism will suffer, it may well be a great opportunity to help these horses. See the video on New Tang Dynasty Television. Poor Treatment of Horses Threatens Tourism in Indonesia And please join the Facebook cause Help the Abused Carriage Horses of the Gili Islands.
THE PETITION
what people are saying
PLEASE SIGN IT. We have about 2 1/2 weeks until JAAN meets with the business leaders. Please let's try to give them 3,000 signatures by July 14th. We need your help - please send this to your friends, colleagues and lists. The Internet has brought the world closer and a victory here will help all the horses slaving in this trade. Let's stand in solidarity with each other for the animals.
This petition has been signed by Holly Cheever, DVM, world renowned equine veterinarian and specialist on urban carriage horses and Nedim Buyukmihci, founder of AVAR - Association of Veterinarians for Animal Rights. This was Dr. Buyukmihci's comment: As a veterinarian experienced with horses, I strongly believe it is inappropriate to use horses to pull carriages. The history of such use is replete with numerous tragedies in which horses have been seriously injured or killed. Accidents involving motor vehicles or collapse due to heat stroke or other conditions are the major issues which plague these horses in general. Also, in an effort to keep costs down and maximize profits, some operators do not properly care for their horses. Some of the horses I have examined have been almost emaciated and had chronic leg injuries. The conditions under which the horses are forced to work are often arduous (high heat and humidity) particularly in an environment like the Gili Islands, leading to metabolic collapse. It is my fervent hope that community leaders will use their influence to ban the use of horses to pull carriages on the Islands. It would be the humane and compassionate thing to do.
Another comment from the petition : #711 wow, am I GLAD I FOUND THIS!!! I just came back from the Gili's and LOVED IT TO DEATH!!! BUT! the carriage horses were beaten for fun...the guys were whipping them and laughing, i NEVER NEVER NEVER saw any water for these poor horses! and it seriously felt like it was about, with the humidity, a good 115 degrees. It was horrible--ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE.
CONGRATULATIONS TO CENTRAL NEW ENGLAND EQUINE RESCUE
for being a winner in the Chase Community Give-a-way
Thanks to everyone who responded to my requests to vote for Central New England Equine Rescue on Facebook for the Chase Community Give-a-way. The contest ended today and they were in the final 200 not for profits. They won $20,000, which will go a long way to help rescue and maintain all of their horses. They are a terrific rescue and home of two former Boston carriage horses, Monty and Teddy. www.cneer.com
