Did You Know?
Fran Smith says in the article, "State of the Arts" that:
Involvement in the arts is associated with gains in math, reading, cognitive ability, critical thinking, and verbal skill. Arts learning can also improve motivation, concentration, confidence, and teamwork.
Comprehensive, innovative arts initiatives are taking root in a growing number of school districts. Many of these models are based on new findings in brain research and cognitive development, and they embrace a variety of approaches: using the arts as a learning tool (for example, musical notes to teach fractions); incorporating arts into other core classes (writing and performing a play); creating a school environment rich in arts and culture (Mozart in the hallways every day) and hands-on arts instruction.

Many thanks to members of Made in the Shade, YA's highly popular music ensemble for over 10 years, and outspoken advocates for arts in education, for their extraordinary memorial concert at Ryles Jazz Club, with proceeds benefiting Young Audiences of Massachusetts.
The event honored Paul Dosier, a member of Made in the Shade, who passed away recently. Paul was the beloved Boston area tuba player, and a founding member of Made in the Shade.
The star-studded line-up of performers included original Made in the Shade members: Dan Fox, Crick Diefendorf, Nathan Bliss (Cook), John McLellan, and Marc Chillemi. Joining the band was Ted Casher, Artie Barbato, Erika Donneson, Steve Langone, Keith Yaun, Dave MacMillan, John Pierce, Jimmy Mazzy, and the great vocalist from New Orleans now living in Gloucester, Henri Smith with his pianist Ben Selling. Members of Shirim Klezmer Orchestra: Glenn Dickson, Eric Rosenthal, Jim Gray, and Michael McLaughlin performed as well.
Morningside Music Studio student ensembles directed by Made in the Shade's Dan Fox, performed. Their show featured the Wunderkind Isaac Lit, Conner Duke, and the 12 year old singing sensation Claire Dickson.
