May 2007

Dear Friend,

As the school year draws to a close, we have enjoyed working with you to bring the arts to Massachusetts' children.  Please notice in our first article that legislation is being proposed to drop arts education from the state's recommended curriculum.  We hope that you will act now to save the arts for our children!

Save Arts Education in Massachusetts!
Take Action Today!

FROM OUR FRIENDS AT MAASH:

The Massachusetts Department of Education is proposing to drop arts education from its recommended curriculum for high school students.  Eliminating a graduation requirement robs students of the opportunity to engage in creative work--skills that are critical to succeed in today's global economy.

Please write a letter in your own words asking the Department of Education to include an arts education requirement in the recommended core curriculum, also known as MassCore.  Short thoughtful letters are the most effective.  Until May 24, you can write your letter through the MAASH web site.  MAASH will then print all the letters and deliver them to the Commissioner.  All letters must be received by the Department of Education by this Friday, May 25.

Click here to to write a letter through the MAASH website.

YA Showcase
Thank you to the Bancroft School!

Young Audiences would like to thank the students and staff, particularly Sydney Patten, at the Bancroft School in Worcester for hosting our Spring Showcase last Wednesday.  The showcase is an opportunity for parents, teachers, and administrators to see a variety of Young Audiences' teaching artists in action with students so they can find the program that best fits their needs.

We are currently looking for elementary and middle schools to host our fall showcases in early October 2007. If you are interested, please click below to visit our website and print an application packet.

Thank you to Coffee Pond Photography for sponsoring the Spring Showcase!

45th Anniversary Celebration
Young Audiences of Massachusetts celebrated our 45th Anniversary on Sunday May 6, 2007 with our "45th Anniversary Party & Young Artists Concert" held at the Arsenal Center for the Arts in Watertown.

This benefit event featured a special performance by renowned violinist Stefan Jackiw and the Brattle Street Chamber Players.  In addition, David Zucker, entertained with his special brand of performance magic.

Proceeds from this special event will benefit the ongoing programs of Young Audiences of Massachusetts.

Now in it's 45th year, Young Audiences is Massachusetts' only statewide arts organization for children. Our mission is to encourage lifelong engagement with the arts by making them an integral part of every child's education.
