Fenway thunders with taiko drumming!
This past Friday, five members of Odaiko New England had the rare opportunity to perform the national anthem with internationally renowned trumpet jazz master Tiger Okoshi at Fenway Park. This event heralded the return of Jazz Week to Boston, while welcoming the new Red Sox pitcher Daisuke "Dice K" Matsuzaka. Tiger Okoshi arranged the piece, expertly combining jazz riffs on trumpets and trombones (performed by Berklee students) with the traditional rhythms of Japanese taiko drumming, resulting in an unusual but stirring rendition of the national anthem. Odaiko New England has been a member of the Young Audiences' roster since 1999, demonstrating the ancient Japanese art form of taiko drumming and its importance in Japanese culture to schools across Massachusetts. Their program highlights kumi daiko (ensemble taiko drumming), and combines traditional taiko rhythms with dynamic movement and rhythms from other musical traditions.
