Hocus Pocus isn't bogus
the great zucchini Abracadabra! What a great word to hear! The Publick Playhouse presents two performances by 'The Great Zucchini'-Thursday, June 2, at 10:15 am and 12 noon. Join us for either of these FREE performances for tiny tots. 'The Great Zucchini' is Washington's funniest and most magical preschool & kindergarten entertainer, with over 12 years experience making kids laugh! Also known as a "Kid Whisperer," this popular performer keeps tots laughing with his humorous magic tricks. For more information, call 301-277-1710.
Heritage Bike Rally
bicyclists on a trailCelebrate National Trails Day with an exploration of the Heritage Area on Saturday, June 4, from 8:30 am - 12:30 pm. There is something for everyone! A "trike" ride for the youngest heritage travelers will loop around Lake Artemesia. A longer route is designed for young adults, who will ride through College Park and University of Maryland. An adult ride will explore the early history of the region, and an "advanced" rider program (approximately 35 miles) will take riders beyond the ATHA borders. College Park Aviation Museum and College Park Farmers Market will also be open for participants to visit. The ride will originate from the former 94th Aero Squadron Restaurant parking lot (5240 Paint Branch Parkway, College Park, 20742). T-shirt, breakfast and a BBQ lunch will be provided as part of the registration fee.
Hot Wheels
bicycle partsHave any old bikes or bike parts lying around? On Saturday June 4 from 9 am - 1 pm the Department of Parks and Recreation will be collecting bicycles and bicycle parts, in any condition, for Bikes for the World (BfW). The six sites located throughout the county where you can donate items are Vansville Community Center, Bladensburg Waterfront Park, Bowie Baysox Stadium, Glenn Dale Community Center/Splash Park, Prince George's County Convenience Center on Missouri Avenue in Brandywine, and the National Harbor. BfW accepts, repairs, refurbishes, and ships bikes at low cost to community development programs assisting the poor in developing countries or in the Washington DC metropolitan area. Mmmmm...  can you smell what's cooking?
Beltway BBQ ShowdownWho doesn't love a day filled with family fun, great food and live blues entertainment!? On Saturday, June 4, from 12 noon - 5 pm come check out the Beltway BBQ Showdown at Watkins Regional Park in Upper Marlboro. The Showdown will highlight the art of barbequing in Prince George's County. Winners will advance to the Kansas City Barbeque Society National Championship. Come meet a few east coast BBQ competitors, vote in the "people's choice" sauce contest and purchase and taste samples of top quality BBQ from some of the competitors. View and vote for your favorite hot rod, classic car and even some motorcycles! Enjoy an exciting interactive children's play area, games and a moon bounce. Admission is FREE; nominal fees charged for some activities and merchandise vending. For more information call 301-627-2828.
Cape May whale and dolphin cruise
dolphinEnjoy a one-of-a-kind cruise in Cape May, New Jersey on Saturday, June 11, from 7 am - 7:30 pm. Seniors age 60 & better will board the Spirit of Cape May and sail the tranquil waters in search of dolphins and whales and have lunch at the nearby Lucky Bones Restaurant. This is a trip that you will NOT want to miss! The trip will depart from and return to Gwendolyn Britt Senior Activity Center. Fee includes: round-trip deluxe motor coach transportation, lunch at Lucky Bones Restaurant, and the cruise. All of this for only $117/resident and $140/non-resident. Your ONLY excuse to run with scissors
running with scissorsHarmony Hall Regional Center presents 'Running with Scissors,' an exhibit by Sherill Anne Gross. "Art with a sense of humor and an exceptional level of technical skill with a sharp tool and an eye for detail makes Ms. Gross's cut paper illustrations a visual feast not to be missed." A reception for the artist will be held on Saturday, June 4, from 3 - 5 pm. The exhibit will run from June 6 - July 30. Call for entries
camera bagCalling all artists, ages 18 and older, who live, work, attend school, or have studios in Prince George's County, MD...  Brentwood Arts Exchange is pleased to host The Sky's the Limit, the 2011 Prince George's County juried exhibition of artworks in all media that incorporate photographic techniques. All submissions are due by 5 pm July 22; the exhibition will run from September 5- October 31. Imagemaker Michael B. Platt is the exhibition juror.
