prince georges ballroomThe Prince George's Ballroom, formerly a country club and golf course, is a great venue for your special event. The elegant ballroom, surrounded by lush green parkland, features a beautiful hardwood floor, free wireless internet access, a sun porch and a patio area.  Available for weddings, receptions, birthday parties, social gatherings and corporate events, the Prince George's Ballroom is located in Landover. With 40 staffed, M-NCPPC community centers open throughout Prince George's County, there's one near you!  Most center have fitness rooms where those ages 13 & up can exercise. All centers offer classes, programs and special events for people of all ages and interests. Read more here.
Hand dance, anyone?
dancing feetWhether you're a beginner, an intermediate, or an advanced hand dancer, there's a class for you beginning in April. Baden, Cedar Heights, Glenn Dale, Largo/Kettering/Perrywood, Marlow Heights, Palmer Park, Rollingcrest-Chillum, South Bowie, and Suitland Community Centers, as well as Harmony Hall Regional Center and the Prince George's Sports & Learning Complex are all offering hand dance classes for adults. To find a program that's convenient for you, visit www.pgparks.com, click on the SMARTlink logo, and browse through classes under the category heading "Performing Arts."  Select the program of your choice and register online!
A special event for National Poetry Month 
Alonzo DavisOn Saturday, April 2, Brentwood Arts Exchange at Gateway Arts Center is hosting a special, FREE program - Alonzo Davis & The Bamboo Muse, Art, Prose and Poetry - from 2-4 pm. To kick off National Poetry Month, this event features a book signing, discussion and poetic recitations from The Bamboo Muse, Davis' new book featuring his artwork paired with the poetry and prose of 12 writers inspired by his work. The Bamboo Muse is co-presented by the Brentwood Arts Exchange and the Prince George's African American Museum & Cultural Center's Gallery 110. This event is offered as part of the Resonant Forms exhibition, featuring art work by Alonzo Davis, Martha Jackson-Jarvis, and Frank Smith. For information call 301-277-2863.
A great summit for young ladies
diamondsYou don't have be an athlete to get fit, stay healthy, and have fun! All young ladies ages 10-17 are cordially invited to attend the 2011 Diamonds and Pearls Health and Fitness for Girls Summit at the Prince George's Sports & Learning Complex on Saturday, April 9 from 11 am-5 pm. Enjoy warming up on the track at the mother/daughter walk-run; participate in an introductory fitness class and sports clinic; collect information and purchase items from great exhibitors; go swimming and enjoy other activities. Program fees are $5/person for residents; $6/person for non-residents. Register in advance for SMARTlink course #544364, or, if you prefer, register on-site at the event.
Some April trips for seniors
seniors on bus tourGwendolyn Britt Senior Activity Center is hosting two special trips for seniors ages 60 & up in April. All aboard to Pennsylvania for a QVC Studio tour and a tour of Longwood Gardens on Thursday, April 14. The bus will leave at 7:30 am and return to the center at approximately 7 pm. Trip fees are $70/resident and $84/non-resident. Register for SMARTlink program #480564. Come see Grammy-award winner Nancy Wilson in concert at Strathmore Music Center (Bethesda). This trip is scheduled for Friday, April 22 from 4:30-10:30 pm. Before the show, enjoy a lovely dinner (on your own) at Clyde's Restaurant. The fees for transportation plus concert tickets are $60/resident and $72/non-resident. Mark your calendars, as history will come to life
Marching Through TimeMarching Thru Time, the 19th Annual Multi-Period Living History Encampment will be held on the grounds of Marietta House Museum (Glenn Dale) on Saturday, April 16 and Sunday, April 17 from 11 am-5 pm each day. This FREE event features re-enactors from 1st c. Romans through 20th c. World War II, period merchants and a food vendor. FREE parking is available at Glenn Dale Community Center, with continuous shuttle service to the event. For more information call 301-464-5291.
