The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission has lots for everyone to enjoy here in Prince George's County. Get your tickets to Montpelier Arts Center's fall jazz concerts. Attend a terrific Café Groove program or a FREE Open House. Sign up for a volunteer activity to help enhance an M-NCPPC park on National Public Lands Day. Explore the park system and enjoy the social, healthy, fun recreation programs and activities.

Sharon FarmerIndividual concert tickets for Montpelier Arts Center's Fall Jazz Series performances are now on sale! Esther Williams and Davey Yarborough open the season at Montpelier on Friday, September 10 at 8 pm. Additional performances include A Tribute to Buck Hill, the Avery Sharpe Trio, Nasar Abadey and SUPERNOVA, Stefan Scaggiari, Julie Nixon and Rumba Club. Tickets are $20/concert ($18/members & seniors) and performances are scheduled on Friday nights at 8 pm. Get all the details here.
Enjoy hip-hop music more
boy with guitarCafé Groove, a terrific coffee house program for teens, will be held at Oakcrest Community Center (Capitol Heights) on Friday, September 3, from 7-10 pm. Hip-hop musician/rapper Substantial (real name Stan B. Robinson) will give a live performance. In keeping with Café Groove tradition, there will be an open mic, and visual arts contest with cash prizes. Tickets are $3, are available for purchase at the door, and include refreshments. Doors open at 7 pm and the performance begins at 7:30 pm.  Call 301-446-3232 for more information.

zumba classCedar Heights Community Center is hosting a FREE Open House and everyone's invited. Stop by the center any time between 10 am and 2 pm on Saturday, September 4 and enjoy free demonstrations of activities including hand dance, Pilates, Zumba, toning & sculpting, Spanish and aerobics. riversdaleThroughout September, Riversdale House Museum will be celebrating the Stier family's Flemish heritage. (Riversdale was constructed between 1801 and 1807 for Henri Stier, a Flemish aristocrat.) On Friday, September 10, at 6 pm, Riversdale is hosting a Belgian-Style Beverages program. Mike Roy, the brewer for Franklin's Restaurant and Brewery in Hyattsville, will discuss his craft, with an emphasis on Belgian-style beers. Enjoy samples of his and other brews. Fees are $20 per resident and $24 per non-resident. Capacity is limited; registration is required by September 3. This program is for adults ages 21 & up. For more information call 301-864-0420.

ice skatingThis is a great week to clean out your closets, attic and garage. The Wells-Linson Complex (College Park) is hosting a hockey equipment and skates sale & swap next week. Stop by on Saturday, September 11 between 8 am and 12 noon; admission is FREE. Bring the equipment and skates you've outgrown or no longer use anymore and let someone else enjoy them. Take this opportunity to make a little money and/or purchase equipment at affordable prices. Improve and enhance local, public land more
national public lands dayNow is the time to sign up to volunteer for a one-day, hands-on project at an M-NCPPC park in Prince George's County. Saturday, September 25 is National Public Lands Day - the nation's largest volunteer effort to improve and enhance public lands. Remove non-native, invasive species with a naturalist at Watkins Nature Center. Cut and pull Oriental Bittersweet from native trees along the Patuxent River. Help clean a hiking trail or University Hills Duck Pond. Remove non-native, invasive plants at Cheverly Euclid Park and/or Little Paint Branch Park. On average, projects will last between 2 and 3 hours, but volunteers may leave early. Work gloves, tools and other materials needed will be provided.  Please call the Park Ranger Office at 301-627-7755 for more information and to register for a volunteer project.
