July is Park and Recreation Month! The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission has lots for everyone to enjoy here in Prince George's County. With concerts to attend, a carousel and train to ride, mini-golf to play, aquatic facilities to splash in, and recreation classes to register for, you'll have a busy week. Live more, play more at the park and recreation facilities in your community.

family attending summer concertThis week's Summer Concerts in the Park programs feature several great, live, FREE performances for your listening pleasure. Enjoy DeAndrey Howard's Collector's Edition (classic jazz) at Bladensburg Waterfront Park on Sunday, July 4 from 6-7:30 pm. Higher Hands (jazz/funk) will perform at Watkins Regional Park on Thursday, July 8 from 7-8:30 pm. BG & The Mojo Hands (blues/swing/rockabilly) will put on a show on the grounds of Montpelier Mansion on Friday, July 9 at 7:30 pm as part of the 32nd Annual Montpelier Summer Concerts Series. These FREE shows are for everyone, so come out and rock to the beat.

carouselJuly is the month for Terrific Tuesdays in the Park! From 5:30-8:30 pm on Tuesdays July 6, 13, 20 & 27, families are invited to enjoy unlimited rides on the train and the carousel, as well as unlimited rounds of mini-golf at Watkins Regional Park for one, flat fee. Residents pay only $5/person/night, and non-residents pay only $6/person/night. Stay and watch a FREE family movie in the park beginning at dusk. For more information call 301-218-6700.

indoor poolSummer is synonymous with swimming. M-NCPPC operates aquatic facilities throughout Prince George's County. Learn all about the Make a Splash FREE water safety program, indoor pools, outdoor pools and aquatic opportunities that'll whet your appetite for water here.

skateboarderGrab your helmet, your pads and your skateboard.  Mount Rainier Skate Park, located at the 3700 block of 37th Street and Wells Avenue, features a plaza design with two raised platforms connected to steps, rails and ramps for beginning and intermediate skaters. Stop by any day from dawn to dusk. Please note: the park is not staffed. Use of the facilities is at your own risk.

kids playing basketballPrince George's County residents ages 12 to 24 are invited to participate in the Safe Summer program. M-NCPPC facilities throughout the county are open late from 10 pm to midnight until August 21. You can enjoy all kinds of FREE recreation activities, enrichment sessions and workshops. softball men's summerM-NCPPC is currently accepting team registrations for men's, women's and coed Adult Fall Slow Pitch Softball leagues that will begin play the week of September 7. Games will be played at Watkins Regional Park (Upper Marlboro), Fairland Regional Park (Laurel) and Tucker Road Complex (Fort Washington). Fees are $350 for bi-county teams and $410 for non bi-county teams. To sign up, click here and then look for the 2010 Fall Adult Softball Registration Form under the heading "softball".
