Focus on fitness more
Senior Fitness DayCalling all seniors ages 60 & better. Join us to celebrate National Senior Health and Fitness Day on Wednesday, May 26 from 8 am-1 pm at the Prince George's Sports & Learning Complex. A variety of FREE fitness, exercise, and aquatic classes will be held, along with educational sessions. Take advantage of FREE health screenings and pick up valuable, FREE information from the many event exhibitors. No pre-registration is needed; just drop in and stay as long as you like! For more information call 301-446-3400.

kayakersJoin the Park Rangers at Lake Artemesia for a kayaking program on Saturday, May 29 from 7-9 am. Those ages 6 & up are invited to see local wildlife from a different view. Park Rangers will provide a safety orientation as well as discuss the lake's history and the wildlife found in the park. Kayaks, paddles and safety vests will be available. (Kayak rental fee: $5/person) Fishing is also permitted. The program is weather permitting, and kayaks will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Participants ages 6-17 must be accompanied by an adult. All persons 16 years of age & older must have a non-tidal fishing license in order to fish. A trout stamp is also required to catch and take trout from Lake Artemesia. (Refer to the Maryland DNR fishing guide or website for more information.) Additional dates are available for both canoe and kayak trips at the lake. For more information or to make reservations call 301-627-7755.

picnic outsidePrince George's County parks are great places to have a picnic. Bring a basket of food, play on the playgrounds, courts and fields, and enjoy the great outdoors. To reserve a picnic area that requires advanced reservations, call the Park Permit Office at 301-699-2400. To find a park with a picnic area that's convenient for you, log on to www.pgparks.comand click on the Find a Park bar on the right side of the home page.

chessLearn the rules and strategies associated with the game of chess. Those ages 6 & older may sign up for a chess class. A four-class session beginning on June 3 that'll be held Thursdays throughout June from 7-8:30 pm will take place at James H. Harrison Elementary School in Laurel.  A three-class session beginning on Saturday, June 5 that'll be held the first three Saturdays in June from 11 am-12:30 pm in the Carriage House at Montpelier Arts Center. Detailed information about fees and registration is available in SMARTlink. After selecting the language of your choice, click "browse," then click "advanced search" and type in the word "chess" as your keyword. Pride Swim TeamYouth ages 6-17 are invited to be a part of the Prince George's PRIDE Swim Team this summer at Ellen Linson Aquatic Center in College Park or North Barnaby Splash Park in Oxon Hill. Search "Competitive Swim Training" in SMARTlink to register. For more information call 301-446-6800.

Frequent the fairways more
golf clubsJoining the Frequent Fairways Club gives golfers some major advantages at M-NCPPC golf courses throughout Prince George's County. After purchasing the card for $10, you'll begin accruing points when you pay greens fees at Enterprise, Paint Branch and Henson Creek Golf Courses. When your "free play" level at your home golf course is reached, that round (greens fees) is on us! Plus, you'll receive a free round just for joining the Frequent Fairways Club. And don't forget that The Department of Parks and Recreation has accessible golf carts available at the courses to make participation in this sports easier for individuals with mobility impairments. Operated by hand controls, the seat on the cart raises, lowers, and swivels to allow positioning to the ball. The golf bag is mounted to the front of these carts for easy access to the clubs.
