The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission has lots for everyone to enjoy here in Prince George's County. Have you made any New Year's resolutions? If so, they're likely to include some of the most popular ones... spend more time with family & friends, start/continue a fitness routine and get/stay in shape, enjoy life more, learn something new, help others, get organized, and travel more. We resolve to help you keep those resolutions. Happy New Year!

summer day camp kids
It's winter - what better time to start planning for summer? What will your children be doing when school it out? Summer day camp sessions will operate June-August. Summer playgrounds (drop-in programs, Mondays-Fridays, 9 am-3 pm for Prince George's County residents ages 6-12) will be held from June 28-August 6. Summer Xtreme Teen Centers (drop-in programs, Mondays-Fridays for Prince George's County residents ages 13-17) will be held from June 28-August 6. To help you get organized, here are some important dates to note:
  • Monday, February 1: Visit www.pgparks.com and click on the SMARTlink logo to view listings, descriptions and registration information about summer camps, playgrounds and teen centers.
  • Saturday, February 27: Summer Day Camp registration will begin at 9 am for Prince George's County residents.
  • Monday, March 1: Summer Day Camp mail-in registrations for Prince George's County residents will be opened beginning at 9 am.
  • Saturday, March 6: Summer Day Camp for non-Prince George's County residents will begin at 9 am..
  • Thursday, April 1: Registration for Summer Playgrounds and Summer Xtreme Teen Centers will begin at 9 am.

Appreciate art? Savor sports? Delight in dancing? Fancy festivals? Enjoy exercise? Value volunteering? Cherish crafts? Treasure travel? Dig drama? Relish raptors? Sign up for a class, trip or program; attend a performance; hike, bike or jog; enjoy the great outdoors; tour an historic site, play a sport or a game; soak up the beauty of nature all year. Fitness can be fun 
fitness classNearly all M-NCPPC community centers in Prince George's County have fitness/weight rooms that those ages 13 & over can use with a community center ID card plus fitness pass.  The Prince George's Sports & Learning Complex and Fairland Sports and Aquatics Complex also have fitness rooms. Enjoy indoor tennis at Cosca, Fairland and Watkins Tennis Bubbles.  Swim, ice skate, box, play golf, or sign up for a fitness & health class through SMARTlink. There are plenty of opportunities to enjoy fitness at parks and recreation facilities throughout the county.

Help others
cotillion volunteer Opportunities to volunteer with the Prince George's County Department of Parks and Recreation are almost unlimited. Help out at a one-day special event or assist on an ongoing basis. Be a docent or tour guide at a historic mansion; become an animal care handler at a local nature center or farm; give your time to a child! Whatever your interest, we may have a spot for you! Students who need service learning hours can earn their hours through this program. It's easy to register, just click here and follow the easy instructions.
Learn something new
boy with guitarSign up for a recreation class or attend a workshop and you just may come away with a wonderful, new hobby. Learn to belly dance, play the piano, swim, paint, cook, twirl a baton, ice skate, play soccer, or make beads. Take an SAT prep, Spanish, sign language, journal writing, or academic enrichment class. You're never too young or too old to learn something new. Go to www.pgparks.com, click on the SMARTlink logo, select the language you prefer, the select browse. Explore the classes you can take to learn something new.

Plan for quality time with others
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.There are plenty of parks, recreation facilities and programs that offer leisure opportunities for everyone to enjoy. Next Monday, January 18, Seat Pleasant Activity Center is hosting a program from 1-4 pm for people of all ages titled A Man of Vision: A Tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Enjoy dramatic readings, music, and dance at this FREE event. For more information, call 301-773-6685. February is Black History Month and there'll be extraordinary programs offered throughout the county. Tour a historic site or museum, visit a nature center, or bike on a trail with family and friends. Visit www.pgparks.com to explore leisure opportunities you'll enjoy.
Travel more
seniors on bus tourAll aboard for extreme enjoyment. We're offering upcoming trips to Arena Stage and Toby's Dinner Theatre. Take a ski trip, see the Philadelphia Flower Show, and enjoy an African American history tour of Washington, DC.
