This past weekend sixteen Formula Car Challenge presented by Goodyear drivers competed at the Sunoco Championship Series Double Regional event at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. Although some rain was in the forecast, both days ended up being perfect weather.
Most FCC races are exclusive events run with NASA sanctioning, but this weekend was different. "This is the one race weekend this season that we share the track with cars outside of our series, and the total field was over 30 cars," stated Series Official Ben Hettema. This made for a lot of additional action, as drivers had a lot more traffic to work. This worked to their advantage or disadvantage depending on their on-track choices."
In round 11 qualifying Lloyd Read put his Pro FM on pole with a 1:23.91. Mike Anderson was on pole in the Formula Mazda class with a 1:29.19. Round 12 qualifying was based on fastest lap in round 11, and this put Mike Guasch on pole in PFM and Mike Anderson on pole for FM.
"Both races were on Sunday, and there was only a short time in between for car preparation," added Hettema. "Luckily round 11 went very smoothly flag to flag, and most competitors were in good shape for the upcoming race. Unfortunately that wasn't the case for round 12 as a few of the racers got tangled with only a few laps to go and the race finished under yellow."
