Change of Command Marine Barracks Washington
Col. Christian Cabaniss Takes Command From Col. Paul Montanus
Col. Christian G.Cabaniss, right, prepares to receive the command colors from Col. Paul D. Montanus, left, outgoing commanding officer of Marine Barracks Washington, during a change of command ceremony at the Barracks June 21. The passing of the colors symbolizes the changing of command from Montanus to Cabaniss, as he takes command of the "Oldest Post in the Corps."
"The Barracks is such a mystical place," Montanus said in his farewell speech. "It is a spiritual touchstone for Marines and their families, or like an old family home where generations go to remember, reconnect, grieve or celebrate."
Col.Cabaniss has served combat tours in both Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enuring Freedom in Afghanistan. His previous assignment was as the Military Assistant to the Deputy Undersecretary of the Navy for Plans, Policy, Oversight and Integration.
Col. Montanus, who has served as base commander of Marine Barracks Washington since July, 2010, will move to the U.S. Naval Academy as the Senior Marine and Director of the Humanities and Social Sciences Division.
