Mural Nearing Completion
Mural Under Freeway Reflects History of 8th Street, SE
Mural of 8th Street Scene
Above left, is one of the images on the final panel of the 8th Street, SE, tunnel mural. In the center of this panel DC Fire Department, Engine 18, 414 8th Street, SE, is depicted driving a  fire truck along 8th Street with an American flag flying from the rear of the truck. The large buildings depicted on the panel are Shakespeare Theatre Administration (former Odd Fellow's Hall) to extreme left, and Banana Cafe to extreme right. Look closely and you'll discover many other familiar landmarks.

Above right is one of the "waterfall" panels mounted to the upright columns on the 295-395 freeway facing I Street, SE. The mural process began five years ago. In 2010 and 2011 permits were finally received from the Federal Highway Administration, District Department Of Transportation and the Commission on Fine Arts, and work progressed as weather permitted. The mural is expected to be completed next week with a ribbon cutting in mid-May.
