Greetings!
After what seemed like a permanant winter, suddenly both daffodils and ball games are with us! Change is in the air as two new Row restaurants targeted openings in early May.  Ted's Bulletin will open during the first week of May and Chesapeake House will not be far behind. On the street itself, the city construction crews, a daily presence all winter, miraculously completed their work and vanished - leaving behind a handsome new surface for the corridor.

Meanwhile, the Board of Barracks Row Main Street restructured  the organization creating the new position of Managing Director. Patty Brosmer, who is also the President of the Capitol Hill BID, becomes the first Managing Director of Barracks Row Main Street. Reporting to Patty Brosmer, Martin Smith was named as Executive Director. Smith brings a resume packed with experience in Main Street projects. You will be seeing lots more of Martin Smith in your stores, galleries and restaurants in the next few months. He has just moved to the Hill and plans to frequent the Row as his home shopping area.

Barracks Row Main Street Announces New Management

Barracks Row Main Street (BRMS) announces the appointment of Martin Smith as Executive Director and Patty Brosmer, President of the Capitol Hill Business Improvement District (CHBID) as Managing Director.   The new arrangement between BRMS and the CHBID is designed to enhance the efficiency of both organizations by utilizing the wide range of skills and experience of both organizations resources and staffs.

Martin Smith will provide fresh leadership for the program as it continues to bring economic revitalization to the Eighth Street, SE Corridor on Capitol Hill.

Prior to joining Barracks Row, Smith was working in Philadelphia and Washington as the owner of West215 Design, a boutique consulting firm working in urban planning, business branding and graphic design. He has also worked in commercial corridor management with the Fairmount Community Development Corporation in Philadelphia and is the former Executive Director of the 14th Street Heights Main Street program in NW Washington. Smith holds a Master of City Planning degree from the University of Pennsylvania, and a Bachelor of Arts degree from The George Washington University.   Smith, also a resident of Capitol Hill, is eager to continue his work in commercial corridor management and urban economic revitalization with Barracks Row Main Street.

Patty Brosmer has been the President of the Capitol Hill BID since its inception in 2003 and has over 20 years experience in managing non-profit community organizations.  According to Ms. Brosmer, "This is a smart blending of resources and I am pleased to work with Martin Smith as Executive Director."

                                    ANNOUNCES

TASTE OF 8TH, SATURDAY MAY 1ST

On Saturday, May 1st the international restaurant scene on Barracks Row (8th Street SE at Pennsylvania Ave) becomes even more spectacular as fourteen different eateries join together for their annual sampling celebration, Taste of 8th 2010. This year, newcomers  Zest and Ted's Bulletin swing the pendulum back towards North America: Zest celebrates wholesome, right off the farm vegetables -soups, sandwiches, fish and meats prepared for the American palate, while Ted's Bulletin is both the culinary and architectural reincarnation of a 1930's diner - with a menu of specialties revived from that era.

A United Nations of cuisines has grown up on the 8th Street corridor over the past ten years: Belga Café, known throughout DC for fine Belgian fare sits directly across the street from Cava Mezze, which opened last year to raves with a menu of modern, elegantly presented Greek small plates (like tapas). Up the street is authentic Thai food at Old Siam while Las Placitas constantly amazes diners with large platters of the succulent meat, rice, and plantain combinations of El Salvador. Exotic blends of flavors of the multicultural Caribbean are represented at Starfish Café while at Asian Fusion, the entire Asian continent is at the chef's disposal for Chinese, Japanese, and Korean specialties. Chat's will offer fine wines for the sophisticated palate to sample.

American Soul Food is the focus of Levi's Port Café. Neighbors speculate that owner Johnnie Kersey turns out the best pork barbecue and macaroni and cheese in the entire mid-Atlantic region.  The expected local Italian and Tex-Mex spots become unexpected gems on 8th Street: Trattoria Alberto provides authentic Italian recipes while at Banana Café, Mexican favorites join Cuban classics.  Beginning or ending the Row, depending which way you walk, Capitol Hill Tandoor and Grill offers Indian and Pakistani masterpieces in a lovely simple dining room - enter from the western world and be prepared to let the complex exotic flavors take you for spin to the land of the Rajs.

What to do with so many choices? Taste each one, of course! Sample everything our chefs can cook at the Taste of 8th. Tickets are $5.00 each or 5 for $20.00. Tickets go on sale April 20 at retailers on 8th Street - Capitol Hill Bikes, Chateaux Animaux, Groovy DC, Hill's Kitchen, and Homebody.  For last minute tasters, tickets can be purchased the day of the event at these retailers or at the Barracks Row Main Street Ticket Booth set up near 8th & E Street, SE.
