New Business Developments on Barracks Row
Capitol Hill Bikes: Open for Business!

Capitol Hill Bikes re-opened for business Friday, February 12th, 2010! According to co-owner Denise D'Amour, "we're finally getting
settled in our new location. We scrambled to get back up and running in
record time so our customers would not be without their bike shop for
long. When the snow melts and the weather warms a bit we know people will
want to get back on their bikes and we'll be here for them."
"Our new space at 719 8th St SE, only 5 doors south of our former location, is a
bit smaller but we still have everything a cyclist needs for a great
ride. We are focusing our product selection on our commuter and
recreational cyclists, returning to the original vision Laurie and I had when
we opened 10 years ago. We'll be celebrating our 10th anniversary this
Spring and we'll be resuming our regular shop rides and adding new ones.
We'd love to see all our old friends and meet some new ones, too!" For the last nine years, CHB has been the only independent bike shop on
Capitol Hill, co-owned by Laurie Morin and Denise D'Amour. The shop also offers bike repair services. The neighborhood has a great cycling community, with many
year-round commuters, messengers, enthusiasts, and families with
children who enjoy the trails around Washington, DC; and all will be glad to see their local bike shop is open for business.
Hours: Mon-Fri 11-7, Sat 10-6, Sun 12-5

Ted's Bulletin: Opening Soon on Barracks Row!
Ted's Bulletin is the latest concept by the restaurant gurus who created Matchbox, and is located at 505 8th Street, SE in the former District Lock building. Co-owner Perry Smith does not have a specific opening date, but hopes to open sometime in March.
Prominently featured on the menu will be
burgers made with
beef ground in-house as well as American classics such as meat loaf,
pastrami and grilled cheese sandwiches (the kid's option comes on
Wonder (c) Bread!), and fresh soups and salads. Our culinary team
consists of Shannan Troncoso, Jon McArthur and Jacob Hunter, who will
be shifting
over from Matchbox Capitol Hill and Matchbox Chinatown.
Dessert and Pastry Chef Erica Chirunomula
(formerly of Ten Penn) will be charged with heading up our shakes, pies,
breakfast sandwiches, homemade pop tarts, cakes, muffins and pretty
much all things baking! Erica's work station will actually be in one of
the bay windows so customers and passers-by can see her preparation techniques--a great added visual for the neighborhood!
To round out, Ted's will also serve coffee, espresso
and cappuccinos for takeout or dine in. On the bar side, classic cocktails
will come complete with old-style square ice cubes and fresh
ingredients, a funky but affordable wine list, and
"prohibition style" light and dark beer on tap.
Ted's is a 1930's style interior finished with features such
as art deco light fixtures, brass signage, wall treatments and
marble counters salvaged from the recently demolished Philadelphia
Convention Hall. Other features include vintage-style tin ceilings, a large sky light, bulletin
boards with daily specials, interior oak doors from old law firms with
lettering still on the glass, marble tile flooring, an open kitchen and meat
display case, photos of the neighborhood, and specifically 8th Street and
Barracks Row featured in the menu and framed throughout.

The restaurant will seat up to 75 total with room for a
larger group of 10-12 guests, seating at the bar and classic booths will seat 2, 4 or 6
guests.
Another interesting feature will be a video display in the
dining room with projections of vintage 8mm home movies from
the 30's 40's and 50's, filmed around and about DC, with old footage from the White House,
Arlington and Mount Vernon.
Operating hours: Monday thru Thursday, 7 AM - 10:30 PM
Friday and Saturday, 7 AM - 11:30 PM
Sunday, Open 7 AM with last seating at 10:30 PM
The Chesapeake Room: Opening Soon on Barracks Row!
The Chesapeake Room at 501 8th street is set to open
within the next six weeks. The site previously was owned by beloved Ophelia
Williams whom opted to retire after 25 years of running her flower shop. New
owner Xavier Cervera has carefully transformed the building to include a
new facade and a series of french doors and windows while maintaining
historical integrity.
Hours will include both lunch and dinner seven days a
week, brunch on Saturday and Sunday. Food will be a progressive mix of
seasonal and regional seafood, beef, poultry and wild game. In addition, the
Chesapeake Room will maintain close relationships with our areas organic and
sustainable farmers. Xavier has relocated chef Robert Wood from Savannah to
lead the culinary team in the intimate open kitchen. On site as requested by
Chef Wood is a custom smoker which will highlight delights such as bluefish
pate, smoked oysters, meats and fish. Sixteen wines by the the glass will be
poured including Virginia and regional grapes. Seven regional and seasonal
draft beers will change often.
The restaurant's interior includes Xaviers trademark use
of exotic woods and hand crafted bar and furniture throughout. A custom built
ten foot long saltwater aquarium rises high above the back bar. Seating
includes hand built leather booths , window seating and a twenty foot long
community table. An additional thirty two seats will adorn the outdoor cafe
with its Spanish Cedar tables and deep comfortable seating. Xavier, a Capitol
Hill resident who also owns Lola's and Molly Malone's believes strongly that the
Mid-Atlantic region, with its diverse farmland and waters, has much to offer and
that Hill residents will feel the same.

REMINDER: Lower 8th Street Visioning Exercise Final Community Meetings TOMORROW: Feb. 23, 2010, 8:30 AM & 7 PM People's Church, 535 8th Street, SE
The
Lower 8th Street SE Visioning Process Advisory Committee has
coordinated a vision process with property owners, other community
stakeholders, and Barracks Row Main Street along the Lower 8th Street,
SE corridor. Sponsored by the Capitol Riverfront BID, this process is
an attempt to gain consensus on a vision for the area and to address
issues of height, density, mix of uses, parking and access, as well as
what should be the character of a redesigned Virginia Avenue Park as an
amenity or community benefit for the Capitol Riverfront neighborhood
and Capitol Hill. If consensus can be reached on the vision, it could
serve as the basis for asking the Office of Planning to develop a small
area neighborhood plan that could then be used as justification for any
agreed upon zoning or density changes.
This final meeting will
attempt to synthesize a community consensus on the vision of Lower 8th
Street. For the agenda for the upcoming meeting, and minutes and
presentations from past meetings please visit: Lower 8th Blog Site

Community Integrated Master Plan - Marine Barracks Washington Community Workshop Series
Community Workshop #1: Wednesday February 24, 6 - 8 PM Van Ness Elementary School Auditorium: 1150 5th Street, SE
The
Marine Corps is facilitating a Community Integrated Master Plan to
evaluate community-military development partnering options. There are
unmet facility needs and security requirements at Marine Barracks
Washington (Building 20), and there is potential to meet common
community and military needs through this process.Recognizing that the
Marine Barracks and the community are linked in past and present, the
goal is to use a coordinated planning process to create a win-win in
meeting the development needs of the local community and Marine Corps.
By every indication, the Marine Barracks facility plans on staying in
the immediate area (within a third of a mile) of its current location
of Building 20 at 8th & I. A Community Leadership Group, which
Barracks Row Main Street along with several other community groups is
represented, is providing guidance on the development of the planning
process. Community involvement is
essential to the success of the Community Integrated Master Plan efforts and public
participation in the workshop series is encouraged!
More information on the project can be found at the CIMP Official Website
