Capitol Hill's 7th Oktoberfest on Barracks Row A Huge Success, Thank You To Our Sponsors and Volunteers
|
This year Capitol Hill's Oktoberfest, held on September 26, proved once again to be a festive and fun community event on Barracks Row. The street was full of arts merchants, food vendors, and community organization booths. Oktoberfest, produced annually by Barracks Row Main Street, again drew a large crowd that came early and, despite inclement weather, stayed late!
The 6th Annual National Military Culinary Competition kicked off at 7 AM. The 2009 winner is the White House Culinary Team, consisting of three Navy chefs and one from the Coast Guard! Read the full story and view pics by visiting www.dodlive.com or by clicking HERE. Meanwhile, people lined up all day for tours of the Home of the Commandants and the Marine Barracks at 8th & Eye. The petting zoo drew a huge crowd, as parents and children alike delighted over llamas and baby goats, animals not often seen in our urban landscape. Children also enjoyed the nearby kids' area complete with Streamers the Clown, games, and puppet shows. A car corral hosted cool vintage sports cars, a Zipcar MINI, and a classic checker cab.
On the stage, located at 8th & G Streets, Councilmember Tommy Wells kicked off the event, followed by Presentation of Colors by the US Marine Corps. German oompah band, Die Immergruen Musikanten, St. Marks Players, and the US Marine Corps Brass Quintet gave rousing performances throughout the day. The Marine Corps Silent Drill Platoon gave a dramatic and stirring performance, drawing a huge crowd.
Batala, DC's all-female Brazilian percussion band, drummed up an energetic performance that kept people captivated, despite the rain. A Redskins Cheerleaders performance finished out the day.

Tribute to Bruce Robey Barracks Row Has Lost a Great Friend and Volunteer
|
By Mark Segraves September 21, 2009
"The Hill and our city is a little less today. Many of us have lost a good friend; we've all lost a true visionary and pioneer. Bruce Robey, co-founder of Voice of the Hill newspaper and the H Street Playhouse, died Sunday night at Washington Hospital Center after a suffering a heart attack. I didn't know Bruce as long as many people in the community did, but like anyone who met him, I knew him well enough to know that he was a compassionate and driven man committed to family and his community, whatever community he found himself in. Whether he was vacationing in South Carolina, "retiring" in West Virginia, serving in the Marines, or raising a family on Capitol Hill, Bruce was engaged and determined to make his mark...
