Leadership:
One Big, Grand Experiment

Most leaders are voracious readers, listeners, and learners but... You can't learn leadership from a book.  You can certainly get ideas and concepts to consider but the learning happens right in the lab, in the experience, as a social process... more specifically in conversation, interaction, and relationship.

How do you know if you're leading well?  How many leaders are you creating and what are your results?  That's really the acid test.  Not whether you think people should get it but whether or not they actually do.

In our continued interview with corporate trainer, Ian McKelvie, he reminds us that humility looks good on any leader.  Regardless of what our current culture (and our own experience and pride) tells us... great leaders don't always have to possess the answer or the solution.  Great leaders, like the lioness, know how to "give the work back" to the team.  They know that admitting you have all the answers can be powerful and most teams are not only capable - but willing - to bring brilliance to a situation... if those in the lead move aside and make room for that conversation to happen.

Ian also tells us that creating safety and trust for that conversation to occur is the cornerstone of all human relationship and leadership.  Failure, he says, must be part of the system because as soon as failure is not possible... newness is not possible; innovation is not possible.  Leaders allow their own failure and that of others; they do it publicly and fast... so the growth available from it happens fast.

Leadership:  It's all just one, big grand experiment.  It's an inside-out process and our work and business is only one playground - albeit, a very worthy one - to grow our leadership skills.

"Leadership is communicating to people their worth and potential
so clearly that they come to see it in themselves."
