The Leader You're Waiting For... Is Already Here.

Nobody's coming.  That great boss you've been waiting for; that perfect companion; the book with all the answers; the politician to fix this mess; that awesome leader we finally all want to follow.  Nobody's coming to save you... because you're already here.

In January, I had the opportunity to spend some time with Ian McKelvie, a high-level corporate trainer and performance coach based in Seattle.  I asked him about the latest insights from his massive scope of work in the areas of leadership and building top-performing teams across the globe.  (See more about Ian below.)

Talking with Ian is always an adventure into what's possible and how to turn what we've been thinking "on its head."  Over the next few issues, I'll be synopsizing for you what I learned from our chats and provide for you a link to a podcast of our conversation.  Here's a taste:

Leadership is not a corporate issue, a healthcare issue, a consultant issue... it's a human issue.  An inside-out process.  As we master the internal skills of operating from constantly challenged paradigms, speaking with clarity and inspiration, creating possibilities, openness, non-judgment (just for starters!), we naturally become better leaders.  Great leadership is not about copying a list of things great leaders "do" but rather it's a way of "being."  And the ability to experiment with, demonstrate, and strengthen your leadership muscle happens in the boardroom, on the street, in the operatory, in the kitchen.  Every day, big and small, all the time.

Ian cited a recent article which said that most careers are formed by 10 Key Conversations.  10 moments when everything shifted, turned a corner, revealed an opening... and those can happen anytime and anywhere.  In other words, that conversation with your new assistant, your spouse, a patient, your kid's teacher could make the list!  So it's important to know that you are already here.  The leader you've been waiting on has arrived and is in the game everyday... contributing, learning, developing.

We have countless and precious opportunities every day to create a positive impact and engage in a significant leadership conversation.  They require coming into those opportunities with a "beginner's mind"... fully in the present and open to learning a new leadership skill or perspective.

How do you do that?  Stay tuned... next week's Monday Morning Stretch, with more from my interview with Ian McKelvie, will enlighten us!
