Dear ,

New This Week...

Celebrate Simchas Torah on Friday, October 21

Share the joy as we unfurl the Torah and study the sentence that is sacred to you.

Have you ever seen the entire Torah unfurled like a holy ribbon in a huge circle of people? Simchas Torah marks the completion of the weekly Torah readings, when we read the last Torah portion Deuteronomy 34 and proceed immediately to Genesis 1:1. This reminds us the Torah, and life, is a circle, a cycle, and never ends. At TAO, we honor our Etz Chaim Hee, our Tree of Life, in a sacred, mystic circle, during which your gloved finger points to a Torah selection and the rabbis interpret it through the mystic lens of Kabbalah. It is said that the portion you pick tells you something important about the year to come. Come dance and celebrate the Torah with TAO on October 21st at ArtServe.

Wisdom Class Resumes Wednesday, October 26

After a wonderful summer of classes from our members, Rabbi Marc will begin our Wisdom Class series on Wednesday, October 26 with the subject

High Holy Day Recap & Thanks

I am still feeling the high from TAO's High Holy Day services, which culminated with magical Yom Kippur services.  Our temple without walls certainly created a sacred space at the Westin Cypress Creek Hotel and the Creator was felt everywhere in that holy room.

I have come to expect the sweetest wisdom from our rabbis and this year they did not disappoint. Rabbi Marc talked of the merits of Dialogue, authentic communication that comes from our hearts. On Rosh Hashana, we were treated to Dialogue 101 and, I don't know about you, but I was focused on effective communication - dialogue - all week long. (Just ask my boyfriend!) And, on Yom Kippur, our rabbi continued with a deeper look at Dialogue from different perspectives; how dialogue can help heal relationships, businesses, governments and even the political landscape. And he was very clear that, if communication can heal or harm; can be the cause of war or peace, then it is on each of us to "see the good" where we are, within ourselves and others, and to dialogue with compassion.

From our celebration of Rosh Hashana to the beauty of the Shabbat/Kol Nidre service Friday night to Saturday's depth and heart, our Rabbis Marc and Phillip took us on a spiritual journey into self-awareness and transformation. Rabbi Phillip's warm bass voice resonated throughout the room as he chanted, prayed and sang with strength and faith. His blowing of the Shofar sent chills up and down my spine as my soul awakened to its plaintiff call. We were reminded all day that we are in charge of our life through the power and choice of our thoughts. We were reminded all day that every minute holds the promise of redemption and starting over with a clean slate. We were reminded all day that we are in the metaphorical arms of a loving, compassionate God. And, we were reminded that Jewish Renewal offers a road map to a life of depth and meaning; warmth and joy.

As most of you know, typically I sing in the choir. This year on Yom Kippur, I was called to just be, rather than be on stage. Spending the day wrapped in the warmth of my friends/TAO family made me understand, even more deeply, how critical and life-giving this community is. High Holy Days is a time for sacred communion with God, self and community. This year TAO provided the opportunity for that and more.

I pray that your experience was the same and that you will look to us for your spiritual nourishment during the coming year. Your donations matter. They help to keep us here for you, and we are so grateful. With Shabbat services every bit as joyful and meaningful as HHD on the first and third Friday of each month; Men's and Women's Spirituality Groups and Kabbalah Wisdom Classes, you have the opportunity to deepen the bonds of friendship and community. So please, read your newsletters, visit our web site (www.TAOCenter.net) and allow us to be, and continue to be, your spiritual home. We are here for you.

Being a part of administration, I am aware of the herculean effort it takes to provide these services to the community. And yet, these past two weeks, I watched congregants walk through an easy check-in and sit (and stand...and sit and stand) in prayer & meditation; and sing, dance and chant until Divine Joy became the dominant vibration in the room. And then, I watched as each person seemed to float out on a heavenly cloud.

I would be remiss if I did not laud the hard work of our many volunteers, without whom, we simply could not do what we do. Dee Sacks, our most extraordinary volunteer and Renee Greene, our part time administrator (who puts in more hours than most full time employees,) we would be adrift without either of you and your efforts are appreciated more than words can ever say. We also could never have been so successful without the efforts of committed volunteers. This year, so many of you graciously volunteered your time and efforts to help, and we are enormously grateful. Our deepest, most heartfelt thanks to:

Elyse Blum, Elaine Bloom, Cathy Bowers, Carole Constad, Trudi DeGrazio, Karen DelGuercio, Robin Diciacco, Cecile Dumornay, Joyce Finn, Michael Fish, Dora Fiser, Peter Fox, Lowell Gannon, Kate Gemeiner, Angela Gershenwald, Robert Goldberg, Jamie Menteguiaga, Ron Gotlin, Susan Gotlin, Judi Greenberg, Judi Gulko, Bob Heaton, Fleur Heaton, Steele Hendricksen, Rhonda Hey, Keith Kander, Eleanor Kaye, Pam Kelner, Jacci King, Sandy King, Debbie Kugelman, Alan Kurtzman, Ann Kurtzman, Heidi List, Lisa Lumiere, Elyse Lofgren, Ron Lowther, Rivka Maidan, Joanna Maurer, Jacob Marvin, Carole McConnell, Nancy Mendelson, Sandy Miller, Rose Moussa, Marcia Peschitz, Father Michel Pugin, Susan Reisman, Rachel Rose, Karen Rosenfeld, Jenae Rubin, Dee Sacks, Steve Schatzberg, Shirley Shelpman, Karen Tina Sheskin, Diana Strauss, Marcia Sweedler, Phyllis Tess, Charles Tischler, Rochelle Tischler, Sheila Tobier, Caren Vivado, Janice Weintraub, Linda Weissman, Arnie Welber, Ethelind Wiener, Linda Winter, Myrna Wolf, Irene Yovu, Dottie Zviebel, Robert Zveibel. Each of you played your part in making us look good!

L'Shana Tova to all our holy friends,

Anne Goldberg
President, Temple Adath Or

Are you looking for a meaningful and joyous Shabbat? Look no further.

TAO (Temple Adath Or) is the South Florida Center for Jewish Renewal. We are a warm expression of joyful Judaism that brings Judaism to the 21st Century.

Jewish Renewal is about breathing life and meaning into Judaism. It is a return to the mystic roots of Abraham. It teaches that when we touch the Divine within and allow That to shine through us, we achieve a life of balance, harmony and loving kindness. In its essence, Renewal helps us to access the God within.

TAO services are filled with joy as we sing our way through Shabbat. Prayer, meditation and movement are always a part of everything we do.

Join us the first and third Friday of each month. Whether you are Jewish, non-Jewish or want to feel Jewish again, you will be touched by the depth, joy and connection you will feel at our Services.

Parking

To keep the ability to enjoy services at the Rabbi's home, please follow this parking procedure:

At the Rabbi's house, an attendant will give you a handout with the places you may park. Rabbi Marc did a lot of work to secure parking places acceptable to his development's Board and the City. We must heed the allotments and not park elsewhere.

Please respect the neighbors if they should ask you to move your car or not park in their swale - even if they previously gave permission to park there. By being respectful of their wishes, we assure fewer problems in the future.

Israel faces daily existential challenges like no other nation has ever endured, come learn how we as a congregation can - and must - respond. After services have concluded on Saturday, October 29th, we will be joined by Eric Ross, AIPAC's Broward County Area Director, for a briefing and friendly conversation on the strategic challenges that Israel faces today. This discussion, like all AIPAC engagements, is strictly off the record and closed to the press.

Working with members of Congress and other policymakers, the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) is involved in more than 100 initiatives each year to provide Israel with the financial, diplomatic, military, and moral support needed to help keep the Jewish state strong and secure, and to ensure that the U.S.-Israel relationship remains strong for generations to come. For more information about how you can get involved with AIPAC in Broward County, please visit www.aipac.org.

Eric Ross began his tenure at AIPAC in January of 2009, as the North and Central Florida Area Director. In early September of 2011, he became the Broward County Area Director, where he now oversees AIPAC's development, programming, grassroots lobbying, and political objectives throughout the county.

Eric grew up just outside of Orlando and graduated from the Hebrew Day School of Central Florida. He proudly spent his freshmen year of college studying abroad and volunteering in Israel. He received his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Religious Studies in 2001 from the University of South Florida in Tampa. Eric went on to earn two Master of Arts Degrees from Gratz College near Philadelphia; the first in 2004 in Jewish Studies, and the second in 2005 in Jewish Communal Service with a specialization in Jewish Non-Profit Management.

Eric currently lives in Tamarac, together with his wife and their young daughter.

TAO's Adopted Family

Through our support of the Touch A Heart Foundation, TAO has adopted a family whom we will try to offer visits and support during the coming year.

Our "adopted" family consists of a 62 year old grandma with custody of two grandsons, a 10 and 11 year old. Grandma has MS, and on a good day uses a cane. More often she requires a walker or wheelchair. Her greatest fear is losing her home which is the only home the boys have ever known and handicap accessible for her. Their only income at this time is Social Security.

The family has a "Wish List." If you can provide any of the items on the wish list please contact Renee at the office. You could drop the items off at the office (in the afternoons), or make a donation to cover the costs and Renee will purchase.

WISH - LIST - NEW ITEMS ONLY
  • A gift certificate for shoes for the boys to either Sports Authority or Footlocker
  • Tickets to the movie theater. Closest to them would be Regal Cinema or Cinemark
  • Clothes for the boys - Pants/Shorts (size 12 and 16), Shirts (medium and large)
  • Gas cards, Publix or Target gift cards
  • Rides to and from services
  • Socks, towels, blankets, toiletries
  • Publix card or precooked meal including beverages and paper goods
Grandma does not expect entire wish list to be granted.

We plan to visit our family throughout the holidays and throughout the year. If you are interested in being a part of one of these visits, please let Renee know at 954-888-1408 or by email at Renee@TAOCenter.net. This is a wonderful mitzvah project and we hope each of you can participate in this mitzvah in some small or large way.

Transportation As One (TAO)

CarpoolPeople from Miami to Aventura to Boca to Palm Beach want to attend TAO Services and Wisdom Class and are unable or uncomfortable driving. If you will take someone with you, please email us, and we'll update the list to help make it easy for everyone to attend and participate in our events.

Plus, it's the green thing to do! Carpooling conserves gas and offers the opportunity to enjoy your TAO friends at the same time. Click here for list of people offering rides.

Galia & Ocean Funds

In the spirit of Tzedakah, Paulina and Rabbi Marc set up two funds at TAO - a Galia fund and an Ocean fund. A portion of these funds is used to send toys and other needed items to Jewish and non-Jewish organizations that serve children, including Jafco.

When you share your sweetness to celebrate Galia's birthday (December 6) and Ocean's birthday (June 28) and other occasions, please donate to TAO instead of generously offering toys, clothing and other gifts. In this way, children will benefit from your sweet generosity.

Paulina and Rabbi Marc will be informed that you gifted their children and performed an act of Tzedakah in their honor.

Both Paulina and Rabbi Marc appreciate the health, toys and love their children have and want to give others the opportunity to share as well. To donate, Donate to Galia or Ocean fund for this tax deductible gift.
