As we approach the end of the year, the NCEA is proud to look back at all of our accomplishments! In January, Washington, DC recognized in legislation for endorsement, "...a licensed esthetician who is NCEA Certified." Other states have already drafted similar legislation to raise the licensing standards for estheticians, and recognize the NCEA Certified credential. All licensed estheticians who have attained their NCEA Certified credential will soon be able to apply for a DC Master Esthetician Manager License.
The Commission on Accreditation (COA) approved three major conferences this year: Annual Meeting of the Society of Dermatology SkinCare Specialists (SDSS), Annual Meeting of the Society of Plastic Surgical Skin Care Specialists (SPSSCS), and the 2nd National Esthetic Teacher Training (NETT) Conference. The website also now carries over 40 COA-approved courses in the form of on-demand webinars, interactive online, and journal articles with a CE test. For the over 1,000 NCEA Certified candidates, and those that have already achieved the credential, the quality of continuing education (CEs) units is gaining attention at the regulatory level. Through your individual demand for COA-Approved Continuing Education, we expect this number to double in 2011.
The National Esthetic Teacher Training (NETT) conference this year was impacted by the nation's economic troubles, but the teachers and educators in attendance were recharged with new ideas for their classroom, and student motivational tools. The NETT News - The Esthetic Teacher Resource now has over 1,000 subscribers, and the forward rate of the enewsletter has been above industry average. The NETT News editor - Sherry D. Davis, M. Ed, has done a tremendous job in finding pertinent articles to assist teachers and educators - Thank you Sherry for a job well done! The chair of this year's NETT Conference - Traci Daly from the Atlanta Institute of Esthetics continues to work with the executive office to make the 3rd NETT conference being held May 21-23, 2011 in Las Vegas a huge success!
NCEA's presentation and annual sponsorship at the National Interstate Council of State Boards of Cosmetology Administrators meeting, held August 27-30th in Seattle, WA was well received. State regulatory board administrators from over 27 states were in attendance, and received a NCEA packet of information regarding the certification program, accreditation of continuing education units, as well as NCEA's political advocacy positions. States not in attendance were also mailed complete packets.
Finally, I would be remiss to not mention the hard work of our ReCertification Section Authors and Reviewers: Gillian Keiper/Maureen C. Thacker - Alternative Therapies; Alexandra J. Zani/Gus Anibarro/Patty Owens - Laser & Light Therapy; Terri A. Wojak/Pamela Hill/Susanne S. Warfield - Medical Esthetics. As of July 1st, 2010 NCEA Certified professionals were required to meet the ReCertification Application requirements-including completion of a Knowledge Review Section. This committee worked extremely hard to complete this task using telephone conferences, emails and faxing. Thank you!
The only NCEA general members meeting held this year was immediately following the NETT Conference on Tuesday May 18th.. In my executive director's report given at that meeting, the financial status of the association was given. In order to maintain NCEA's goals, two complex websites, NCEA Certification program, Commission on Accreditation program, and political advocacy initiatives, a difficult patchwork of funding has been utilized. The NCEA executive office will continue to move forward, recognizing that NCEA membership dues only generated 38% of the required budget to accomplish and maintain these initiatives. Membership payment options have been implemented, and your financial support of the NCEA by maintaining membership, will lay the critical foundation for continued growth in 2011.
Happy Holidays!
