January 24, 2012E-Update
Souderton Telford Main Streets

Hello, Reader,

Welcome to the first email blast of 2012. Don't you love the feeling of typing the new date and all the possibilities the New Year offers?

If you follow us through this email, on Facebook or on our main website, www.stmainst.org, you may have noticed that I was not very vocal through December.

I had a serious case of pneumonia post parade and was out of commission for the month of December. Talk about low-key holidays.

It feels so good to be back to work. I cannot believe how many volunteers and Board members stepped up and filled in for me.

My sincerest thanks to everyone who helped with Telford's Tree Lighting, attended the Winter Market and even held a ribbon-cutting ceremony at Shekala's at the Telford Train Station.

Several Board members took on the challenge of keeping our outlets stocked with the Souderton book and picked up cash and checks to be logged and deposited.

They got a small taste of the myriad tasks that I handle through the office everyday.

Now, let's see what is happening in January and into February.

The Souderton Book is Hot!

Did you get your copy?
Arcadia book cover The Souderton book was the hottest Christmas gift around. The sales of this book will support our ongoing revitalization efforts in both boroughs.

It was an especially productive fundraiser after
donated the cost of the first 500 books. We can not thank them enough for making this a great fundraiser.

If you picked up your book for $24, please know that your purchase will help us keep Main Street vibrant.

If you purchased your book for another amount, STMS still gets royalties on that book. Our contract with
only allowed us to sell our books through non-traditional retail outlets.

When the first printing was sold out before the end of November, they allowed us some flexibility and we put our books in more locations. You can find a Souderton Book to support Souderton Telford Main Streets at the following locations:
Univest Bank at the Main branch in downtown Souderton and the branches in Landis Supermarket, Telford, Franconia and Hilltown Township.
First Savings Bank in Hilltown Twp.
Souderton Borough Hall, 30 Summit Street
Ruth & Company, Front Street. Souderton
Souderton Rehab Center, Green Street, Souderton
Harleysville Savings Bank, County Line Road, Hilltown Twp.
Generations, Second Ave., Souderton

You will also find the Souderton photo history book at Consign for Design, Scooters, The Store at the Souderton Mennonite Home, Indian Valley Library and at the big name bookstores.

Sales of our Souderton book are doing so well that Arcadia Publishing is excited to work with us on a second book on Telford.

So if you have any photos or memorabilia for Telford, please contact us!
We are putting together a team to work on the next book. Volunteers are welcome.

History is Hot!

Souderton, Now...and Then
now then theaterThe year 2012 marks the 125th anniversary of the Borough of Souderton. To celebrate, Souderton
Telford Main Streets created a photo book entitled Souderton, published by Arcadia Publishing in November 2011.

In two presentations, Ron and Cory Alderfer will show photos from the book as well as photos that weren't included in the book. Books will be available for purchase. The Team that created the book will be there to sign books, if desired.

Souderton, Now...and Then, Part 1:

Sunday, February 12, 2 pm

This presentation will cover Main St. starting at Chestnut St. and heading down into the hollow, up to Reliance Rd. as well as streets on the northern end of town.

Souderton, Now...and Then, Part 2:

Sunday, February 26, 2 pm

This presentation will show Main St. starting at and including Chestnut St., Broad St., Front St. and streets on the southern end of town.

This is reposted from the IVPL's newsletter.  You should really be reading that newsletter also to stay on top of everything.

Cory and Ron described their powerpoint to me as a current shot of a building with a travel back through time showing how it has evolved from the earliest photo. This sounds like so much fun!
Parade Wrap

Beautiful Weather, Neighborly Participants

The 54th Annual Holiday Parade was a load of fun.

The entire event passes so quickly on parade day.

Highlights that I remember include a great pre-parade breakfast at The Local with an enthusiastic room full of volunteers.

The warmest weather for a parade in the six years I have been here for a parade.

Everyone seemed to know where to go and what to do. I tease our volunteers that the parade will happen whether we get in the way or not. This year that really seemed true.

All the smiles! It was warm enough to smile without freezing your teeth.

The largest crowds along the route in six years.

The big bags of candy that the kids along the route were toting after the parade.

Sen. McIlhinney in the wrong vehicle. I am still trying to figure that one out.

Meeting a very nice musician called Dylan Andre.  This very talented gentleman was a highlight of the parade thanks to our parade sponsor, Almac. His sister works there and made the arrangements to have him perform in the parade.  He was a performer on "America's Got Talent."

He was wonderful with kids.  He caught a ride on a big truck filled with Cub Scouts where he played for them while they waited to join the parade. After the parade, he took time to autograph cell phones, hands, scraps of paper and even a leaf.

A special thank you goes out to the parade sponsors, Harleysville Savings Bankand Almac. We could not do it without you!

Finally, I always enjoy hanging out with a large table full of tired, but laughing, team members who were excited about their part in making another parade a success in Souderton.

A job very well done, everyone!
Events Galore!

Have You Joined Us Yet?
calendar of eventsSometimes when you have a good idea, you know immediately from the response that it truly has merit.

Bob Brecker proposed a website that would hold all the community events that we normally showcase on our website.

We were receiving so many community events that the news that we need to post about our own activities was getting pushed to page two or three. So Bob built it and the listings came.

Our metrics for www.soudertontelfordevents.org went nuts in October. In November and December, events and activities that we knew nothing about suddenly appeared in our inbox.

If you go look at the listings in November and December, you will see why Souderton, Telford and the Indian Valley are such a special place to live and work.

Let's keep the momentum going.

The listings are open to any business located in Souderton and Telford who are holding special events and activities open to the public.

The listings are also open to any non-profit community group who are based in or service the residents of Souderton and Telford.

You get the idea.  We are adding events on nearly a daily basis. If you want to know what is coming up, you must bookmark this site

If you want to add a community event to the site, the instructions are under the "Submit an Event" tab.

Make a different in your community
volunteer
The volunteers of Souderton Telford Main Streets are the heart of the organization.

Without the people who roll up their sleeves and do a great deal of the work, our organization would not be able to point to a long list of projects that we have accomplished.

We always have more projects and ideas than we can handle at any given time. That is why we need your help. Can you give us a couple of hours a month or one day a year?

Our list of tasks is daunting until we divide it between the people who make it all happen. Learn more and sign up on our website.

The coolest part of volunteering is the friends you will make among all the other neighbors who are also committed to making a difference!
Let's Go Skating...Maybe

Weather Presenting a Challenge
ice skating

The Rink at the Souderton Park will open at some point, weather permitting.

The weather permitting has been the challenge as we enjoy a unseasonably warm winter.

Keep your fingers crossed for colder weather and check the Souderton Borough website for the latest rink conditions.

Let's all hope that the rink is frozen for the Skating Party on Saturday, February 4 from 6-9 pm.

They are planning for a DJ, special appearances, hearty snacks and hot chocolate, a fire pit, and more.

Worried about how steady you'll be on those ice skates? Don't be - the committee has plenty planned for those who don't want to ice skate or don't have skates.

A Marketing Opportunity

Auction Items Needed
Souderton Charter school

The Souderton Charter School Collaborative is a very well respected education option located in downtown Souderton. Each spring, they hold a fund-raising auction for parents and friends of the school. This year's auction will be held on Saturday, April 28.

This well-attended event has even moved to larger facilities this year to accommodate the large crowd that turns out to bid on auction items to benefit the school.

Local business owners are invited to donate auction items for this popular event. These passionate family members will remember that your business supported the school that they love.

Anyone interested in donating items should contact Alice Cort at 215-740-5200 by April 13 to assure your item is recognized in the auction materials.
