Souderton Telford Main Streets

Hello Reader,

Thank you to everyone who tells me that they enjoy this email. I appreciate the feedback.

Contrary to all advice on email newsletters, this newsletter can be long. This one is going to be one of those long versions.

Fortunately, you keep telling me that you enjoy the variety and usefulness of the articles. I will do my best to continue to fill this with important information that you can use.

To follow news that comes in between newsletters, follow us on Facebook. We have pages for both STMS and the Indian Valley Farmers' Market. I share news from other businesses and groups on Facebook as well as STMS news.

Let's get started.

Farewell, My Friend

Always Smiling
Nancy Owen

It is with the heaviest of hearts that I must share news of a great loss to Souderton and the Main Streets program. Nancy Owen  has lost her valiant battle with cancer over Memorial Day weekend.

Nancy served as the Promotions Committee Chair for over a year. She tackled her duties with enthusiasm and a great big smile.

Nancy took such great pride in living in Souderton and saw working with our program as a way to give back to her adopted hometown. The number of people she touched continues to amaze me.

The viewing will be held on The viewing will be at Williams-Bergey-Koffel Funeral Home at 667 Harleysville Pike, Telford. The times will be Sunday, 6-8 pm and on Monday morning, 8:30 to 9:30 am. The funeral will follow at St. Maria Goretti Parish in Hatfield at 10 am.
Exploratory Meeting on June 9

What are We Exploring?
important date
Meeting will be held at 7 pm on Thursday, June 9 at Generations.

Bill Fontana, Executive Director of the Pennsylvania Downtown Center, will present background on the improvement districts, how they function, and the process for establishing one in a community. Then he will answer questions.

What is our objective? As Souderton Telford Main Streets cycles out of the Pennsylvania Main Street funding stream for administrative funding, the STMS Board of Directors is exploring other funding mechanisms to continue the operations of the organization. The improvement district is one of several options that they are considering.

Although PA DCED will no longer provide funding for operations, Souderton Telford Main Streets is still eligible to apply for funds for projects. With a new Souderton Telford Revitalization Plan nearly complete, both boroughs have a shopping list full of potential revitalization projects. By sustaining the Main Street program, Souderton and Telford boroughs and business communities have an opportunity to apply for state funds for specific, planned projects though the Commonwealth.

Why you should plan to attend? Because this is an Exploratory Meeting, we cannot predict where the boundaries of an improvement district would be placed in either borough. That would be determined after (and if) we receive state funds for creating an Improvement District Plan. A formal plan is necessary for the formation of an Improvement District.

We are asking commercial property owners and any other business owners or home owners interested in the ongoing revitalization to attend this meeting to learn about a potential tool for continuing the efforts of Souderton Telford Main Streets

We are also inviting our local elected officials to join us in exploring this tool that has successfully served so many other communities. Their cooperation is necessary for the success of an Improvement District.

Please RSVP to the Souderton Telford Main Streets office at 215.723.6627 or by email.

Mission Accomplished.. So Far

The Team
Arcadia team After five absolutely amazing months of hard work, the photo history book has been sent of to Arcadia Publishing for proofing, typesetting and pre-production work.

To celebrate the  final submission on May 31, they met to celebrate with good food and lively discussion. The stories about the wonderful people they met were wonderful. Complete strangers graciously opened their doors and their photo albums to team members to share their memories for the book.

Cory and Ron drove to Pittsburgh and back writing and editing captions. Ginger found that she can sit in front of a computer and write for 8 hours at a stretch. And the stories went on with much laughter and enthusiasm.

They talked about the different ways they can share the photos that did not get into the book to share their excitement about local history. They also talked about how to thank all the people who were so generous with their photos and stories.

In 10 to 15 weeks, we will get the page proofs back for final review. The actual books will arrive in mid-October. keep an eye out for what should be the hottest Christmas present in Souderton this year!

Concert Series Kick off

Sunday, June 5 opens season

Red Molly
The annual Sundae Concerts in the Park series opens on Sunday, June 5 at 7pm in the Souderton Community Park.

Red Molly is the opening act. The dynamic female trio that began as a happy accident around a campsite (at the 2004 Falcon Ridge Folk Festival) is now drawing invitations from renowned historic national events like Merlefest, and is winning over audiences around the country. Spurred onward by an ever-growing and devoted fanbase, and the desire to commit themselves to touring farther from home, Red Molly is at the start of a new and exciting musical chapter.

"We are busily reinventing fan favorites from our current recordings, while adding new material and collaborating on songwriting for the first time," says Gardner. Listen to a taste of their music on their website.
An Invitation from Linda Beck

From the Indian Valley Public Library
Linda Beck

Last June I was writing to announce the beginning of our capital campaign - and our plans to add glass study rooms and enlarge the Community Room, all under an environmentally-friendly green roof.

Now, a year later, I am happy to report that the project has been finished, the ribbon-cutting will take place on June 10, and you're all invited to stop in during this open-house weekend - Saturday or Sunday, June 11 or 12. Enjoy a cup of coffee, meet our Board of Trustees, and look around. This is a beautiful, welcoming place.

You'll find that the six-foot high library stacks in nonfiction are gone; shelves are low, with comfortable chairs nearby, and it's easy to browse, linger, and read.

Thanks to hundreds of donors who contributed to the project and to the Capital Development Committee for heading up our fundraisers and capital campaign.

While you're here, check out all the new books, DVDs, Playaways, audio, Wii games, and more. The library is a true community treasure.

Lively Library

Not the stereotypical library
IVPLI just skimmed through the Indian Valley Public Library's email newsletter to see what else I can add. Wow! Linda' newsletter is longer than this one.

You must sign up for their email newsletter, follow them on Facebook or just checkout their website

They have so much going on that I don't know where to start. They have book clubs, used book sales, a Beer Fest, groups to talk about reading and writing books, a film group, free eBooks, a babysitting course and the list scrolls onward.

In short, you have to read the newsletter for yourself to appreciate what a fantastic resource we have in our community. It's the second busiest library in Montgomery County for a good reason!
More Media Exposure

Main Street Minute
IVLive logo

If you read this email blast or follow us on Facebook, you know that yours truly has been doing a five to ten minute Main Street Minute on Monday mornings on the  Indian Valley Live radio show on  WNPV 1440.

We go on the air about 11:10 am and I am out of the booth by 11:30am. Well, show host, John Ralston, has asked me to do a full show on June 20. Since his new bride, Patricia, is a friend and they will be on their honeymoon, I agreed.

I plan to focus the day's show on Buy Local, Eat Local with our new Market Manager, Anita Palazzo Serratore as a guest. The Indian Valley Farmers' Market will be opening the following weekend so we will have lots to talk about.

I also have a few other guests in mind to invite who are also knowledgeable on the day's topic. Tune in and see if I can handle more than 10 minutes on the air. You can also listen to the show online in the archives after it is posted. (Please don't laugh too hard.)

Creative Financing In a Tough Economy

Don't give up hope. There are alternatives out there to help you get your projects done. They've put together a panel of financial experts which will be presenting their programs to Montco's Young Professionals. Interns Needed at Main Street office

Real Life Experience
InternsWe could use a summer intern at the Souderton Telford Main Street office.  We have several small business marketing opportunities that need someone to guide and develop.

If you know someone who wants to learn about what life is like as a small business owner, this is a great opportunity. I work with the interns to make sure they get real experience that can help them in the future.

We have a strong record of helping our past interns prepare for their next step into the real world. Of course, it is an unpaid internship.

If you know of an student who would be interested, contact the Main Street office at 215.723.6627 or email me.
