Dear Reader,
I have some breaking news for you.

As part of the information gathering phase of the Economic Revitalization planning process for the two boroughs, we are looking for YOUR opinion. The planners at Montgomery County just sent me the link to the online survey they developed.

We are the first community where they have tried gathering input online. Please take a couple of minutes to complete the survey so we can include YOUR opinions in our planning process. Let's set the standards high for other communities to match.

Penny Auction is Full of Fun and Treasure
The Ladies' Auxiliary of the Souderton Perseverance PennyFire Company Annual Penny Auction will be held on Saturday, November 14th, starting at 6:00pm.

Please note, they are beginning one hour earlier!!  This year, doors will open at 5:00pm at the fire house located at 266 North Second Street, Souderton.

They hope you will be able to attend and see the wonderful items our local businesses donated for this event. It sounds like an exciting and enjoyable evening that is a real tradition in our  community.

  Election Results
Happy Post-Election Day!

It looks like we can proudly say that two active members of Souderton Telford Main Streets have been elected to Souderton Borough Council.

Ed Huber has been active with the Economic Restructuring Committee for several years now. Steven Toy has been volunteering for the past year with the Design Committee. Both gentlemen have a deep commitment to our communties.

As a non-profit organization, we can not endorse candidates. So we have been watching from the sidelines as these gentlemen have learned the process of local elections.

Souderton Telford Main Streets interacts with all levels of government. Consequently, it serves as a good foundation for residents, business owners and property owners who want to have a positive impact on our two towns through an elected office.

They have opportunities to attend meetings and interact with elected officials on concrete issues. They get to know the complexities of the issues, to see how decisions are made and to see how much time the elected officials put into their positions. You didn't appreciate it when you learned about it in civics class but now it's real.

Because our organization was formed by the Borough Councils of Souderton and Telford, we have exceptional working relationships with both Councils.

Our bylaws mandate representation from both Councils and each Borough's Planning Commission. As a result, we have numerous past and current Board members on both Councils.

In Souderton, Jeff Gross, Andy Schlosser, Mayor John Reynolds, and Rick Halbolm have all worked with Main Streets as volunteers, board members, and committee chairs. Jeff Gross is the current Souderton Council representative.

In Telford, Scott Hillegass is the Council representative. Other council people attend and help with festivals, tree lighting ceremonies and the Indian Valley Farmers' Market. We recently recruited the wives of several Telford councilmen. They care as passionately about Telford as their husbands do.

So Congratulations to Ed and Steven. Congratulations to the residents of Souderton for electing two hard-working, thoughtful and dedicated citizens to represent you on Borough Council. They join the good company of dedicated public servants and volunteers working to assure the quality of our communities.

Calling All Photographers

cameraThe Promotions Committee is issuing a challenge to all our local photographers. Professional and amateur photographers are invited to submit a photograph from this year's parade for the 2010 parade postcard.

They are looking for a photo that captures the theme of NEXT year's parade; Classic Towns, Classic Christmas. This theme was suggested for next year to celebrate Souderton and Telford's designation as a Classic Town of Greater Philadelphia.

So plan to be at the Souderton Holiday Parade on Saturday, Dec. 5 at 11 am. with your camera and see if you can capture our 2010 theme.

Speaking of the Parade
Christmas ParadeThe Online Registration is working nicely and we are awaiting your registration. This year's theme is "An Old Time Christmas."

The Souderton Holiday Parade is open to businesses, community groups, owners of classic and antique vehicles, neighborhood groups, families and everyone else.

We average about 1500 people in the parade. Why? Because it is a load of holiday fun. So pile your family, friends and co-workers into a vehicle and join us as the December 5 parade winds its way through Souderton.

Everybody loves a parade!

Holiday Challenge
The Souderton Telford Main Streets is compiling a list of holiday gift ideas from local borough businesses that are special, thoughtful and may even help someone else. This holiday gift giving season the focus will be on gifts that are chosen with care and consideration.

Buying a gift from a local business expresses that thoughtfulness. It also supports a local business that sustains our local economy with jobs, the purchase of support goods and services and donations to local community groups.
  christmas presents
So we challenge everyone to send us your idea of a wonderful local gift that others may not have thought about. All we ask is that it be from a local business from Souderton or Telford borough.

The first idea on the list is Joni and Friends of Greater Philadelphia's beautiful 2009 Christmas cards and 2010 planners among several other gift items. Stop by their offices at 121 E. Chestnut Street in Souderton to learn about their wonderful work and help with you purchase of a gift item. What a thoughtful way to make a gift put a smile on the face of many.

Another idea is a gift card from Melodia Grill. Purchase $100 in gift cards and receive a $10 card for yourself. See...multiple happy people again!

We will post a daily gift suggestion on the Souderton Telford Main Streets Facebook site from Thanksgiving through Christmas Eve. What do you want to see on that list?

soccer ball w flagThe Souderton Area Soccer League was pleased with the response to their food drive at the election polls on Tuesday. They kept emptying out the bins all day and ended up with a respectable amount for the food banks. The expressed their thanks for all the support!

They asked also us to remind everyone that they will be collecting at their tournaments for the next two Saturdays. You can drop off nonperishable food items, diapers and other personal hygiene items during the day at either of the fields.

They will be playing at the Franconia Elementary School and the Landis Supermarket fields. The bins will be near the parking lots for everyone's convenience.

They will distribute the items to local food banks for needy families. Thank you for helping these kids make a contribution back to their own communities.

Holiday Show at the Montgomery Theater?

We can always count on the Montgomery Theater to present a non-traditional holiday show. No saccharine sweet confections but  something completely different to tickle the funny bone.

This year's show is "I Love My Wife." A musical that takes place at Christmas in Trenton? Yes... and a delightfully funny one too! Satirizing the sexual revolution of the 70's, two couples are plunged into liberated mutual quadrangular lovemaking but only manage to get their toes wet. Wally, a public relations man, and Alvin, who's in the furniture moving business, have been friends since high school. Monica and Cleo, their respective wives, are manipulated into joining this charmingly energetic escapade. Winner of 2 Tony's and 4 Drama Desk Awards!

The show opens on November 12 and runs through December 5. Get your tickets early and all other necessary information at their website. You can always count on a sellout for a show of this caliber at the Montgomery Theater.
Another Show to Catch
The Dutch Country Players Theatre is presenting "Fiddler on the Roof" by Joseph Stein, Sheldon Harnick and Jerry Brock. Remaining show dates are Friday and Saturday evenings and Sunday matinees through November 22. Curtain time for evening shows is 8 pm and at matinees at 2 pm.
